  • In this paper, free vibration of a sandwich curved beam with a functionally graded (FG) core was investigated. Closed-form formulations of two-dimensional (2D) refined higher order beam theory (RHOBT) without neglecting the amount of z/R was derived and used. The present RHOBT analysis incorporated a trapezoidal shape factor that arose due to the fact that stresses through the beam thickness were integrated over a curved surface. The solutions presented herein were compared with the available numerical and analytical solutions in the related literature and excellent agreement was obtained. Effects of some dimensionless parameters on the structural response were investigated to show their effects on fundamental natural frequency of the curved beam. In all the cases, variations of the material constant number were calculated and presented. Effect of changing ratio of core to beam thickness on the fundamental natural frequency depended on the amount of the material constant number.

  • The functional behavior of each body segments were investigated with respect to human standing posture when they were exposed to the horizontal vibration in the sagittal plane. This study is processed by experimental approach. The data is analyzed, both in the time domain and in the frequency domain. Random and multisinusoidal vibration was used as input. The ankle, hip, and head were employed as the significant body segments. High relative movements were present between hip and head, and there was no significant relationship between ankle and head. Variations of visual input produced a significant postural effect.

  • The promyelocytic leukemia (PML) gene is a gene known to be a tumor suppressor, although recent data suggest that it has a dual function in tumorigenesis. It was initially discovered in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) in which a t(15; 17) chromosomal translocation fused it to the retinoic acid receptor alpha ($RAR{\alpha}$). It has been shown to be involved in various types of cancer. It has at least 6 nuclear isoforms and a cytoplasmic type with different characteristics. Its multiple functions in growth inhibition, apoptosis induction, replicative senescence, inhibition of oncogenic transformation, and suppression of migration and angiogenesis have made it a therapeutic target for cancer therapy. However, its dual role in the process of tumorigenesis has made this field challenging. In this review, we discuss PML structure, functions and expression in tumors.

  • Background: The association of colorectal cancer with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a controversial issue in cancer research. This study aimed to identify the HCMV virus in colorectal cancer tissues and to investigate the association of HCMV with colorectal cancer. In this study, 50 cancer tissue samples and 50 samples without colon cancer were studied in order to identify the HCMV virus through nested-polymerase chain reaction. The virus was identified in 15 cases of colorectal cancer tissues (15/50) and in 5 cases of normal tissues (5/50). Eight cases of adenocarcinoma tissues were in a moderately differentiated stage, and 7 cases had well-differentiated stage tissues that were positive for viral DNA. The findings were statistically evaluated at a significance level of p<0.05. The HCMV virus could playa role in creating malignancy and the progress of cancer through the process of oncomodulation.

  • As the recurrence and mortality rates of bladder cancer are high, research is needed to find suitable biomarkers for early detection, evaluation of prognosis, and surveillance of drug responses. We performed a computerized search of the Medline/PubMed databases with the key words bladder cancer, biomarker, early detection, prognosis and drug response. Several markers were identified at DNA, RNA and protein levels with different sensitivities and specificities. Only a few of the potential bladder cancer biomarkers have been approved for clinical use. Efforts now should be concentrated on finding a panel of markers with acceptable sensitivity and specificity for early detection of bladder cancer.

  • Cancer-testis antigens (CTAs) are a group of tumor associated antigens with a restricted expression pattern in normal gametogenic tissues but expression in a broad range of malignancies. Their expression pattern has made them potential targets for immunotherapy. However, expression of some of these antigens has been demonstrated in normal stem cells as well as cancer stem cells (CSCs). As CSCs have been shown to be sources of metastasis and tumor recurrence, novel therapies are being focused on their eradication. On the other hand, CTA expression in normal stem cells raises the possibility that CTA based immunotherapies cause side effects in normal tissues.

  • Reliability is an important issue in cascaded H-bridge converters (CHB converters) because they use a high number of power semiconductors. A faulty power cell in a CHB converter can potentially lead to expensive downtime and great losses on the consumer side. With a fault-tolerant control strategy, operation can continue with the undamaged cells; thus increasing the reliability of the system. In this paper, the operating principles and the control method for a CHB multilevel rectifier are introduced. The influence of various faults on the CHB converter is investigated. The method of fault diagnosis and the bypassing of failed cells are explained. A fault-tolerant protection strategy is proposed to achieve redundancy in the CHB rectifier. The redundant H-bridge concept helps to deal with device failures and to increase system reliability. Simulation results verify the performance of the proposed strategy.
