  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the foot pressure distribution correlates with the lumbo-sacral curvature, and the Oswestry Disability Index in chronic low back pain patients. Methods : We measured the fore foot pressure and the rare foot pressure using the foot analyzer in 28 women subjects with chronic low back pain. The lumbo-sacral curvature and the Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) were also measured. Results : 1. Subjects with higher ODI(%) had significantly lower Fore foot pressure/Rare foot pressure ratio(F/R ratio) (p<0.01). 2. Lumbar lordotic angle and Ferguson angle were inversely related to ODI(%) (p<0.05, p<0.01). 3. Lumbar lordotic angle and Ferguson angle were positively related to F/R ratio (all p<0.05). Conclusions : Using the Foot Analyzer(FA-48S, Tech storm Inc.) we have shown that F/R ratio has significant correlation with the lumbo-sacral curvature and the Oswestry Disability Index. These result suggest that the Foot analyzer may be used in assessing back pain in chronic low back pain patients.

  • Substrate removal efficiency of industrial wastewater from dye plant was investigated with fluidized-bed biofilm reactor(FBBR). Wastewater was diluted by 2, 3 and 6 times for experiment. When F/M ratio was increased 0.2 to 0.3, substrate removal efficiency of wastewater was rapidly decreased in all dilution ratio. Substrate removal efficiency was increased with dilution ratio in same F/M ratio, with hydraulic retention time. In case of 6 times diluted wastewater, below 0.2 F/M ratio, removal efficiency of BOD was $90{\sim}97%$. For reactor design, the parameters such as Y, $k_d$ and r was obtained as follows: $Y=0.3365\;k_d=0.03782\;day^{-1}\;r=0.997$ in 2 times diluted $Y=0.3341\;k_d=0.02750\;day^{-1}\;r=0.996$ in 3 times diluted $Y=0.3365\;k_d=0.03434\;day^{-1}\;r=0.998$ in 6 times diluted

  • Spray characteristics were investigated by impinging F-O-O-F type injector with varying the impingement angle through 15, 20 and 30 degree and the mixture ratio(O/F ratio) from 1.5 to 3.0. Experimental results show that the correlation between dispersion and impingement angle is not influenced of the mixture ratio variation, but which has influence on number density, and there is a linear correlation between dispersion and impingement angle. Velocity distribution, standard deviation and SMD of droplets are decreased as the impingement angle increases. Also, it was confirmed that the distribution of droplet size are in accordance with Rosin-Rammler and Upper-limit distribution.

  • A number of different methods have been used for modeling the sorption of volatile organic chlorinated compounds such as tetrachloroethylene/perchloroethylene (PCE). In this study, PCE was adsorbed in several natural sorbents, i.e., Pahokee peat, vermicompost, BionSoil®, and natural soil, in the batch experiments. Several sorption models such as linear, Freundlich, solubility-normalized Freundlich model, and Polanyi-Manes model (PMM) were used to analyze sorption isotherms. The relationship between sorption model parameters, organic carbon content (foc), and elemental C/N ratio was studied. The organic carbon normalized partition coefficient values (log Koc = 1.50-3.13) in four different sorbents were less than the logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow = 3.40) of PCE due to high organic carbon contents. The log Koc decreased linearly with log foc and log C/N ratio, but increased linearly with log O/C, log H/C, and log (N+O)/C ratio. Both log KF,oc or log KF,oc decreased linearly with log foc (R2 = 0.88-0.92) and log C/N ratio (R2 = 0.57-0.76), but increased linearly with log (N+O)/C (R2 = 0.93-0.95). The log qmax,oc decreased linearly as log foc and log C/N increased, whereas it increased with log O/C, log H/C and log (N+O)/C ratios. The log qmax,oc increased linearly with (N+O)/C indicating a strong dependence of qmax,oc on the polarity index. The results showed that PCE sorption behaviors were strongly correlated with the physicochemical properties of soil organic matter (SOM).

  • The experiment was conducted to obtain estimates of heterosis, selective index, genetic advance and selective efficiency in cross among silkworm varieties. Seven parents, 21 F$_1$ hybrids, and 21 F$_2$ populaltions from diallel crosses among them were evaluated. The results obtained are summarized as follows: In male and female of F$_1$ generation, the negative heterosis was shown in two characters of fifth instar period and boiling on ratio, and the positive heterosis with the value of 20.90-37.60% in the other characters. In those of F$_2$, the nagative heterosis was shown in two characters of cocoon layer ratio and boiling off ratio, and the positive heterosis in the other characters. The selection weight of cocoon weight for bave weight was the highest of those of all the characters, and that of the combination of the fifth instar period and cocoon weight for it was the highest of those of all the combination. The genetic advance of cocoon weight toward bave weight was the highest of all the characters. The highest genetic advance and selective efficiency were shown in the combination of all the characters.

  • In recent decades, analyzing the activities of human brain achieved some accomplishments by using the functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) technique. fMRI data provide a sequence of three-dimensional images related to human brain's activity which can be used to detect instantaneous cognitive states by applying machine learning methods. In this paper, we propose a new approach for distinguishing human's cognitive states such as "observing a picture" versus "reading a sentence" and "reading an affirmative sentence" versus "reading a negative sentence". Since fMRI data are high dimensional (about 100,000 features in each sample), extremely sparse and noisy, feature selection is a very important step for increasing classification accuracy and reducing processing time. We used the Fisher Discriminant Ratio to select the most powerful discriminative features from some Regions of Interest (ROIs). The experimental results showed that our approach achieved the best performance compared to other feature extraction methods with the average accuracy approximately 95.83% for the first study and 99.5% for the second study.

  • Gamma generalized linear models are useful for non-negative and skewed responses. However, these models have received less attention than Poisson and binomial generalized linear models. In particular, hypothesis testing for the significance of regression coefficients has not been thoroughly studied. In this paper we assess the performance of various test statistics for gamma generalized linear models based on numerical studies. Our results show that the likelihood ratio test and F-type test are generally recommended and that the partial deviance test should be avoided in practice.

  • The phenolic beads in macrosize range were obtained by suspension polymerization at $98^{\circ}C$ from phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of basic catalyst with a phenol to formaldehyde (P/F) range of 1:1~1:4, and they were carbonized to spherical carbon beads under nitrogen at $700^{\circ}C$. Thermal analysis on spherical phenolic beads obtained by suspension polymerization showed that the postcuring process is essential. In order to optimize the suspension polymerization, the effects of the P/F molar ratio, the pH of catalyst, and the molecular weight of stabilizer on the size distribution and yield of spherical phenol beads were examined separatively. The particle size was increased whereas the yield was decreased with P/F molar ratio. The increasing basicity of catalyst made the particle size to increase, while the molecular weight of stabilizer had more effect on the yield rather than on the particle size distribution. The thermal stability of the spherical phenolic beads obtained through postcure was also examined by TGA. The phenol beads of high P/F ratio still showed the weight loss at $220^{\circ}C$ even after postcure due to the high possibility of dibenzyl ether, while those of low P/F ratio showed the steady decrease in weight during $220^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, which showed that the optimal P/F ratio was 1:2.
