To investigate the restoration procedure on soil physical properties at the surface of visiting road affected by rest-year system. This study was carried out at visiting roads of stream of Chilsun in Jirisan. Mean soil strength in 20cm of soil depth was lower in the Rest-Year System areas (1.5-1.9 times in Site 2, 1.1-7.5 times in Site 3) than in the control (Site 1). Soil strength was recovered by the Rest-Year System in the national park. Mesopore rate (pF 2.7) in 0-15 cm of soil depth was higher in the Rest-Year System areas (1.2 times) than in the control. This indicates that mesopore rate is rapidly restoring in the Rest-Year System areas. Pore space rate in 0-7.5 cm of soil depth was higher in the Rest-Year System areas (23.2% in Site 2, 23.6% in Site 3) than in the control (22.4% in Site 1). Pore space rate in 7.5-15 cm of soil depth was also higher in the Rest-Year System areas (22.9% in Site 2 and Site 3) than in the control (18.9% in Site 1). Soil pore space was remediable by the Rest-Year System. Bulk density in 0-7.5 cm of soil depth was lower in the Rest-Year System areas (1.674g/$cm^3$ in Site 2, 1.668g/$cm^3$ in Site 3) than in the control (1.723g/$cm^3$ in Site 1). Bulk density in 7.5-15 cm of soil depth was lower in the Rest-Year System areas (1.785g/$cm^3$ in Site 2 and 1.721g/$cm^3$ in Site 3) than in the control (1.721g/$cm^3$ in Site 1). Soil bulk density was decreased in the Rest-Year System areas of the national park. Amount of soil erosion was lower in the Rest-Year System areas ($0.017m^3$/km/yr in site 2, $0.023m^3$/km/yr in site 3) than in the control ($0.054m^3$/km/yr in site 1).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-obesity and anti-inflammation effect of the cheonggukjang (a soybean paste fermented for only a few days) in diet induced obesity mice. Weight gain was significantly decreased in the mice fed cheonggukjang compared High Fat Diets (HFD). The HFD plus cheonggukjang (CGJ) were also effective in improving the lipid metabolism. The levels of plasma triglyceride, cholesterol, ALT, AST, leptin, glucose, and insulin were significantly lower in CGJ than HFD group (p<0.05). The adiponectin level of CGJ group was significantly increased compared to the HFD group (p<0.05). In the CGJ group, the mRNA expression of adipogenic genes in the liver and adipose tissues, which are transcription factors crucial for adipogenesis, were significantly suppressed (p<0.05). The number of $CD11b^+F4/80^+$ T cells, $Gr-1^{int}CD11b^{high}$ cells, and $Gr-1^{int}CD11b^{high}$ cells were significantly higher in HFD group than CGJ group (p<0.05). The size of adipocyte was significantly reduced in CGJ group compared to HFD group. In addition, the contents of liver lipid droplets were significantly downregulated in the CGJ mice than HFD mice (p<0.05). Collectively, these data suggest the novel function of cheonggukjang in modulating adipogenesis through an immune function-alteration involving downregulation of adipogenic transcription factors and macrophage activation.
Activated sludge samples were collected from a municipal sewage treatment plant and used for enrichment of microbial consortia with aniline as the sole carbon and nitrogen source. Threc aniline-degrading bacteria were obtained lrom microbial consortia and an isolate which has excellent aniline degradability was selected for this study. The isolate was Gram-negative, and identified and designated as Delfha sp. JK-2 on the basis of various physiological and biochemical tests. 10 mM aniline was completely degraded within 24 hours after inoculation of the culture. Ammonium ion was liberated in the medium transiently during the incubation and disappeared when aniline was completely degraded. Addition of glucose as a supplementary source to aniline minimal media showed significant decrease in aniline degradat~on rate for the strain Effective degradation of aniline was achieved by the addition of 0.5% nitrate as a nitrogen source, and resulted in approximately 80% higher aniline degradation compared to the absence of nitrate. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16s [DNA sequence revealed that the strain was closely related to De@ia acidovorans, with 96% overall similarity. The 16s [DNA sequence of JK-2 was also found to be closely related to those of six other clonal types, including Acidovoru, Aquaspirillum. Xylophilus, Variovorm, and Rhodofernr.

The specific attributes of aroma quality of canned tuna meat were investigated before and during refrigerated storage. Fresh, cooked tuna, beefy and meaty flavor notes of canned tuna meat were changed to card-boardy(1 week storage), oxidized fat-like(2 weeks storage), fatty acid-like and heavy oxidized fat-like(3 weeks storage), and then moldy and painty(4 weeks storage) flavor notes during storage in refrigerator at $4^{\circ}C.$ More than 126 peaks of volatile compounds collected from canned tuna meat were separated on Carbowax 20M capillary column of gas chromatographic analysis. Of the peaks, 54 compounds were identified by mass spectral data, matching $I_E$ values, and sniffing the effluent of each peak from GC detector. The contents of many low molecular weight compounds eluted with early retention times were decreased, whereas some other new compounds eluted with longer retention time were formed during storage. The compounds increased up to 3 weeks of storage and then decreased at extended storage time(4 weeks) were 1-penten-3-ol, 3-penten-2-ol, heptanal, limonene, 1-pentanol, octanal, 1-hexanol, nonanal, 2-octanone, 2-nonanone, 1-heptanol, benzaldehytde and some methyl substituted benzenes. p-Thiocresol, 2-chlorophenol, and 2-heptylthiophene were formed after 4 weeks of storage, but not detected in fresh canned tuna. Therefore, these compounds could be used as indicators for the quality changes during refrigerated storage.
To develop the rehabilitation measures for rockily denuded forest lands which are widely distributed in Seoul metropolitan area, erosional characteristics of denudation should, first of all, be evaluated and analysed. As a fundamental study for developing such technical measures, the rockily denuded lands were classified into 6 types according to denudation features of the mountain land, and also movements of stone debris-and-sand on rock-exposed hillslopes were measured and analysed. The 6 basic types of denudation features include a) natural rock-outcrop-exposed land, b) stone debris-and-sand scattered land, c) stone debris-and-sand deposited land, d) coarse sand producing bare land susceptible to weathering and erosion, e) dwarfed pine growing land, and f) torrential valley susceptible to the debris slides. In the stone debris-and-sand scattered hillslopes (type b), average amount of moved-down debris reached to about 3.9 ton/ha/yr due to surface washing and slidings. In the particle size distribution of the moved-down debris, it amounts to about 25% of 10-25mm, about 15% of 5-10mm, about 24% of 2-5mm, and about 36% of less than 2mm in diameter class, respectively. The detailed experimental studies should be accomplished further more about the denudation processes including weathering, erosion and debris slides on rock-exposed hillslopes.

Purpose: To investigate the characteristics and chronological changes of gastric cancer in Korea, the Information Committee of the Korean Gastric Cancer Association performed nationwide survey for 2004. Materials and Methods: The data on patients who underwent gastric cancer surgery in 2004 were collected from 57 institutes and compared with those of 1995 and 1999 which were reported in 2002. Fourteen factors (sex, age, tumor location and size, gross type, approach to operation, radicality, operative method, reconstruction method, WHO and Lauren classification, UICC stage, and numbers of positive and retrieved lymph nodes) were analyzed. According to the annual number of gastric cancer operations, 57 institutes were divided into 4 groups (group 1, <100; 100 ${\leq}$ group 2 < 200 operations; 200 ${\leq}$ group 3 < 500 operations; group 4, ${\geq}500$). Results: Data on 11,293 patients were collected. The sex ratio (M : F) was 2.05 : 1 (7,586/3,705). The mean age was 58.0 years old. The age of highest incidence in both male and female has increased recently. The proportion of early gastric cancer has increased from 28.6% in 1995 and 32.8% in 1999 to 47.4% in 2004. The mean number of retrieved lymph nodes was 34.0 (32.8, 34.0, 36.1, and 32.9 for group 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively). Conclusion: Early gastric cancer has increased in 2004 compared to 1995 and 1999. Gastric cancer surgery seems to be performed with acceptable quality in view of number of retrieved lymph nodes. These data presented in nationwide survey could be used as a fundamental resource for gastric cancer in Korea.
The urban forest offer many opportunities to maintain and enhance local and regional biological diversity. Pinus densiflora stands in isolated urban forest in five areas of Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, Ulsan, and Cheongju were investigated by landscape and community ecological methods for diagnosis of current status and construction of conservation plan. Species composition of five study areas revealed regional characteristics. As the result of stand dynamics, absence of pine seedlings and saplings were observed. Cheongju, significantly, revealed highest species diversity (H'=1.86) and richness (24) among study areas, and the opposite was true for Daegu (1.35 for H', and 14 for richness). Ratio of alien species was highest in Daegu (15.8%) (F=5.05, p=0.0016). Based on landscape analysis, complexity of pine patch was higher in local city than metropolitans, but statistically not significant (p=0.133). Complexity of pine patch revealed significant positive correlation with diversity and richness, but not with percentage of aliens. Synthetically, ecological management based on community and landscape ecological information was recommended. Cautious artificial regeneration strategy was necessary to regenerate pine forest in urban area.
The purpose of the research is to understand the life of persons with disabilities caused by an accident by reconstructing their post-accident experiences. As a research tool, Fritz $Sch{\ddot{u}}tze's$ narrative interview was used, and three cases were analyzed in terms of a 'process structure of life'. After the researcher reconstructed each case, she sorted the cases comprehensively both according to the common features as well as to the differences among them. In doing so, the researcher came up with three characteristics of persons with disabilities caused by an accident. First, rather than identifying with their present life, the interviewees identified themselves with their life before the accident happened. Such identification problem is connected with their problem of accepting their handicap. And the interviewees identified themselves with disability groups. It showed that they feel more comfortable and secure among other people with disabilities than with families or friends. This makes them stay in the group of the disabled, in which they can understand and respect each other, rather than staying in a group in which people discriminate the disabled from able bodied and do not accept the disabled as equal members. Second, in their narration the interviewees told stories emphasizing their life after the accident happened. This feature can be compared with the experiences of those persons who underwent a trauma. Finally, it was found that our country's welfare policy for persons with disabilities caused by an accident is designed without differentiating people according to gender or educational background. Through these findings, the researcher intends to reflect on our country's current social welfare services and to look for new methods in order to implement proper social welfare practices.
Interorder somatic hybrids were obtained by protoplast fusion between Pleurotus ostreatus in the order Agaricales and Elfvingia applanata in the order Aphyllophorales. The fusants were classified into stable heterokaryons and spontaneously segregated heterokaryons. Hyphae of all fusion products except two strains did not form clamp connections. Out of them, two clamped and three clampless fusants produced mature fruiting bodies by light-dark cycle on sawdust rice bran medium. All of these basidiocarps had clamp connections. Three fusants were analysed with the distribution of progenies and segregation of genetic characters by random spore analyses. The genetic markers were shown to segregate and recombine in the first generation of monospores isolated from basidiocarps. Phenotypes of a large number of auxotrophic progenies were not detected in the two clamped fusants. The aberration ratio of segregants indicated the gene interaction resulting from different genome structure between distantly related species. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was adopted for the detection of somatic hybrids nuclear DNA. Four fusants showed a positive results in three kinds of primers. The prominent reaction products are represented by new bands in primer # 87 and # 125. Out of four fusants, two somatic hybrids had non-parental mtDNA patterns when digested with EcoR1 and HindIII. Comparison of somatic hybrids, tissue culture isolates(TC) and multispore germination isolates(MS) were made using esterase isozyme analysis. It is apparent that somatic hybrids had a minor banding patterns which are quite different from those of parents.
Genetic diversity and population structure of eleven Liriope platyphylla (Liliaceae) populations in Korea were determined using genetic variation at 20 allozyme loci. The percent of polymorphic loci within the enzymes was 55.9%. Genetic diversity at the species level and at the population level was high(Hes = 0.178; Hep = 0.168, respectively), whereas the extent of the population divergence was relatively low ($G_{ST}$ = 0.064). $F_{IS}$, a measure of the deviation from random mating within the 11 populations, was 0.311. Total genetic diversity values ($H_T$) varied between 0.0 and 0.535, giving an average over all polymorphic loci of 0.323. The interlocus variation in within population genetic diversity ($H_S$) was high (0.305). An indirect estimate of the number of migrants per generation (Nm = 3.66) indicates that gene flow is high among Korean populations of the species. In addition, analysis of fixation indices revealed a substantial heterozygosity deficiency in some populations and at some loci. Mean genetic identity between populations was 0.988. It is highly probable that directional toward genetic uniformity in a relatively the homogenous habitat is thought to be operated among Korean populations of L. platyphylla.
