  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is frequently observed in intact middle-aged or older male dogs with symptoms ranging from asymptomatic to various symptoms such as urination, dyschezia, dysuria, tenesmus, and intermittent serosanguinous or clear serous exudate. A 4-year-old, intact male Welsh corgi with symptoms of intermittent hematuria and serosanguinous exudate at the urethral opening was diagnosed with BPH and intraprostatic hematocyst through ultrasonographic examination and cytology test. The dog was internationally adopted for reproductive purposes and needed to undergo BPH treatment while maintaining fertility. Thus, 2.5 mg finasteride was administered orally once a day for treatment option and therapeutic effects were observed, including loss of clinical symptoms and reduced prostate and intraparenchymal cyst size.

  • Plants protect themselves from diverse potential pathogens by induction of the immune systems such as systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Most bacterial plant pathogens thrive in the intercellular space (apoplast) of plant tissues and cause symptoms. The apoplastic leaf exudate (LE) is believed to contain nutrients to provide food resource for phytopathogenic bacteria to survive and to bring harmful phytocompounds to protect plants against bacterial pathogens. In this study, we employed the pepper-Xanthomonas axonopodis system to assess whether apoplastic fluid from LE in pepper affects the fitness of X. axonopodis during the induction of SAR. The LE was extracted from pepper leaves 7 days after soil drench-application of a chemical trigger, benzothiadiazole (BTH). Elicitation of plant immunity was confirmed by significant up-regulation of four genes, CaPR1, CaPR4, CaPR9, and CaCHI2, by BTH treatment. Bacterial fitness was evaluated by measuring growth rate during cultivation with LE from BTH- or water-treated leaves. LE from BTH-treatment significantly inhibited bacterial growth when compared to that from the water-treated control. The antibacterial activity of LE from BTH-treated samples was not affected by heating at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Although the antibacterial molecules were not precisely identified, the data suggest that small (less than 5 kDa), heat-stable compound(s) that are present in BTH-induced LE directly attenuate bacterial growth during the elicitation of plant immunity.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the biological characteristics of Rhizobia in biological nitrogen fixation system. The results of investigation were as follows; Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis pattern of root lectin in the presence of SDS was ascertained electrophoretically and chromatographically. The purified root lectin formed immunoprecipitin line with anti lectin rabbit IgG. Root lectin, seed lectin and root exudate were tested for chemotactic ability. Chemotactic responses of RCR3407 and KCTC2422 toward root exudate were stronger than those of seed lectin and root lectin, but there didn't occur chemotactic responses of LPN100, not bound with seed lectin and that of LPN101, bound with seed lectin toward root exudate, root lectin and seed lectin. RCR3407, KCTC2422 and LPN-101, which nodulated with soybean, interacted with soybean lectin, but not with pea lectin. LPN-100, which was not nodulated with soybean, didn't interact with soybean lectin.

  • Clinical findings for 95 patients (159 ears) of MEE (middle ear effusion) treated at Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital (Busan) from July 1979 to August 1981 were observed. A group who was treated with myringotomy and ventilation tube isertion was compared with another group of children treated with adenotonsillectomy at the same time. The following are the results: 1) The sex distribution showed 48 male and 47 female, and the age distribution was most common in the ages from six to ten (34 cases, 35%). 2) MEE of children treated with adenotonsillectomy in the same duration was 18 cases (14%), and it was 19% of all MEE patients. 3) Bilateral effusion (67%) was as twice as unilateral cases (33%). In children, bilateral effusion (42 cases, 88%) was predominant, and MEE in adenotonsillectomized children was bilateral in all cases. 4) The nature of middle ear fluid was 49% serous exudate, 33% mucoid exudate, 5% purulent and 3% bloody fluid. Serous exudate was 59% in adult group, but serous (41%) and mucoid exudate (43%) was similar incidence in children. 5) In the preoperative tympanogram, there were 6% with type A, 91% with type B, and 3% with type C. The incidence of abnormal tympanogram (type B or C) was same in MEE patients of adenotonsillectomized children (95%) and the other children group (95%), and it was 93% in adult group. 6) Treatment by myringotomy and ventilation tube insertion resulted in postoperative improvement in air conduction hearing acuity especially in adenotonsillectomized children.

  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the antiarthritic effect of Hwallak-dan(Huoluo-dan) on the complete freund's adjuvant(CFA)-induced arthritis in Lewis rats. Methods : Arthritis was induced by intradermal injection of CFA into base of tail. Experimental groups divided into normal(n=10), control(n=10) and treated(n=10) group. Animals of control group received normal saline for twenty days, treated group received extracts Hwallak-dan(Huoluo-dan) for same duration, light mineral oil only injected non-arthritic rats were served as normal group. The incidence of arthritis and arthritic index were observed after treatment. Body weight, paw edema volume and thickness of ankle joint were measured at 0, 11, 14, 17, 20 days after treatment. White blood cell(WBC) counts in blood were analysed at 20 days after treatment and tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}(TNF-{\alpha})$, $interleukin-1{\beta}(IL-1{\beta}$), IL-6 contents in paw exudate were analysed by ELISA at 20 days after treatment. Histopathology on the ankle joint were performed at 20 days after treatment. Results : 1. Incidence of arthritis of treated group was 60% and control group was 100% at 20 days after treatment. 2. Arthritic index of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. 3. Paw edema volume and thickness of ankle joint of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. 4. Total WBC of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. 5. Neutrophils of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. 6. $TNF-{\alpha}$ content in paw exudate of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. 7. $IL-1{\beta}$ content content in paw exudate of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. 8. IL-6 content content in paw exudate of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. 9. Histopathological arthritic index of treated group was significantly decreased compared with control group at 20 days after treatment. Conclusions : These results indicate that Hwallak-dan(Huoluo-dan) has inhibitory effect on the development and progression of CFA-induced arthritis in rats.

  • Five phenolic compounds 1-5 were isolated for the first time from the exudate of geminating peanut (Arachis hypogaea). The structures were fully characterized by analysis of physical and spectral data. All isolated compounds were tested for antioxidant activities using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and hydroxyl radical. Compounds 2, 3, and 5 exhibited a strong scavenging effect on DPPH (2: $IC_{50}\;=\;10.4\;{\um}M$, 3: $IC_{50}\;=\;45.2\;{\mu}M$, 5: $IC_{50}\;=\;5.0\;{\mu}M$), and ABTS (2: $IC_{50}\;=\;9.6\;{\mu}M$, 3: $IC_{50}\;=\;5.5\;{\mu}M$, 5: $IC_{50}\;=\;3.3\;{\mu}M$) radical activity, whereas these compounds had weak hydroxyl radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}\;>\;200\;{\mu}M$). The total phenolic contents of the extracts using n-hexane, EtOAc, and n-BuOH were found to be 96.4-964.3 mg gallic acid equivalent per g dry material (GAE/g) and n-BuOH fraction showed the highest total phenolic content (964.3 mg GAE/g). These studies suggest that the exudate of geminating peanut may possess possible health related benefits to humans.

  • The experiment attempted to detect the loss of mineral substances in the crude herb, especially for the Platycodon graucum Nakai after removal of its acrid flavor. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The quantity of the mineral substance was K Ca P Mg and Na in orders. The above substances were more prevalent in the part of the plant above the ground than the plant below the ground, however Na remained the same in both parts of the plant. 2. As a result of water immersion, in order to clear away the acrid flavor, the one day exudate showed that K was highest in amount and in the others there was no significant difference. There was a slight increase, however, in the amount of Ca K Mg P and Na because of exudation on the 3rd and 5 th days. 3. The amount of the exudate was increased by boiling rather than simple water immersion, but the amount of Ca was decreased.

  • Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi is one of major herbs used to treat patients with skin diseases diagnosed by wind-heat syndrome. This study was designed to investigate the effects of Scutellaria baicalensis Extract (SBE) on skin lesion of Contact dermatitis (CD) in mice. We investigated the effects of SBE on skin thickness, skin lesions, erythema index and melanin index in vivo. The effects on body weights and spleen/body weight ratio were also investigated in mice with CD induced by topical application of 1-Fluoro-2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB). In our results, topical application of SBE lowered skin thickness significantly. In addition, SBE ameliorated skin lesions such as erythema, exudate and petechia in mice with CD. SBE also inhibited erythema index elevated by DNFB significantly. finally, SBE did not affect body weight and spleen/body weight ratio. In conclusion, these data imply that SBE can ameliorate skin lesion of CD such as erythema, exudate and petechia, and be used to treat CD patients with relative safety.
