Rubia cordifolia L (Indian madder) contains red color purpurin (65-67%) and yellow color munjistin (10-12%) as well as nordamncanthal (9-10%). Purpurin is a traditional red dye. The purpose of this research is to increase the dyeability of silk and light fastness of dyed silk fabric. We dyed silk fabrics after pretreatment to remove the yellow component of madder using various solvents such as ethyl acetate, ethanol, methanol, chloroform, and acetone. The total K/S value was the highest in the case of chloroform and reflectance was the lowest at the red color region from 470nm to 530nm. Chloroform dissolved the yellow color of Rubia cordifolia; in addition, we found that the total K/S value increased and the ${\Delta}E$ value decreased by chloroform pretreatment for silk dyeing.
This study was carried out to investigate the biological activities of star anise extracts obtained from four different solvents (water, methanol, ethanol and chloroform) by measuring total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, DPPH radical scavenging, hydroxyl radical scavenging, nitrite scavenging activity and antimicrobial activity. The methanol extract showed the highest extraction yield, followed by ethanol, water and chloroform. The properties of the extracting solvents significantly affected the total polyphenol content. Methanol extracts contained more total polyphenols than any other extracts. The highest DPPH radical scavenging activity was found in methanol extract. The hydroxyl radical and nitrite scavenging activity were highest in methanol and ethanol extracts. In antimicrobial activity, water extract showed stronger activities than methanol and ethanol extract against Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis, and no inhibitory effects on Gram negative bacteria were found in all extracts at the concentration used.
Internally plasticized PVC was prepared via chemical reaction of azide PVC and alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester. The chemical structure of alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester and internally plasticized PVC was characterized with FT-IR and $^1H$ NMR. Properties of internally plasticized PVC, including thermal stability, tensile tests and resistance to extraction in different solvents, was investigated. The results showed that alkynyl group containing castor oil methyl ester, as internal plasticizer of PVC, not only decreased the $T_g$ of PVC from $84.6^{\circ}C$ to $41.6^{\circ}C$ efficiently, but also presented no plasticizer loss in five different solvents. The tensile tests showed that elongation at break and tensile strength of internally plasticized PVC was 353.8% and 18.1 MPa. The internally plasticized PVC has potential application in replacing the traditional PVC material in PVC products with high durability.
Microwave energy (2450 MHz) was applied to extract health-effective component (HEC) from grape seed. Three different solvents approved for grape seed extract such as water, ethanol and acetone, were confirmed in their microwave-heating properties and by which extraction efficiencies were determined. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was performed under different parameters; microwave power : (0, 50, 100 and 150), time : (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 min), the sample to solvent ratio : (1:20, 1:10, 1:5 and 1:2.5), and particle size(whole, 20, 40 and 60 mesh) and the subsequent extracts were used for determining their physicochemical properties, such as total yield : (TY), total phenolics : (TP), catechin content : (CC), electron donating ability : (EDA), and browning color. The heating properties of solvent demonstrated the optimal ranges of microwave and time as 100 W and 2 to 6 min. The TY and HFC content were higher with increasing powers in water and ethanol solvent, while HFC content were lower in acetone at over 100 W. The longer of extraction time up to 5 min, the higher extraction efficiency. Based upon the overall MAE efficiency and solvent recovery, it was found optimal to use 10 times volume of ethanol for 10 mesh of seed particle at 100 W.
Aroma of various extracts of Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze was analyzed by electronic nose with 32 conducting polymer sensor arrays. The 57 extracts were prepared by extraction solvents (hot water, ethanol and NaCl solution), extraction temperatures $(100,\;80\;and\;60^{\circ}C)$, solvent mixture ratios of solvent (10 times 35 times) and parts of Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze(flower, leaf and stem). Aroma pattern of Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze extracts showed big difference in normalized pattern and odor intensity with extraction temperatures and parts, but showed no difference with extraction solvents. Especially in the case of ethanol extracts, because odor of ethanol itself was very strong, difference in aroma of extracts with extraction temperatures and parts did not show through the electronic nose. The organoleptic characteristics such as mint odor, grassy odor, mint taste, medicinal herb taste and sweetness for Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze extracts were determined by the profile test and the result of sensory evaluation by quantitative descriptive analysis was explained to QDA diagram. In correlation with the result of aroma analysis by electronic nose and the sensory evaluation, difference in aroma pattern among the extracts concretely brought to light definite characteristics such as mint odor and mint taste.
In this study, we investigated maximum yield of radical scavenging activity (RSA) using each of various extraction solvents and procedure from noni friut (Morinda citrifolia). Noni fruits were either sun-dried (FS) or hot-air dried (FO) at $60^{\circ}C$ after steam blanching. For optimum aqueous extraction, noni fruits should be sun dried and autoclave extraction time should not be over 30 min to produce extraction with high RSA with low cost. In case of 50% ethanol extraction, reflux extracts of FS and FO resulted in $IC_{50}$ of 1.92 mg/mL and 3.06 mg/mL at 8 hr. When $IC_{50}$ values were lower than 5 mg/mL, coefficient of correlation was 0.71 indicating that 71% of the phenolic antioxidants in noni fruits were accounted for the activity by scavenging free DPPH. However, coefficient of correlation significantly decreased to 0.63 over $IC_{50}$ values of 5 mg/mL. Autoclave extraction contained chlorogenic acid of $14.69 \;{\mu}g/mL$ and scopoletin of $3.86 \;{\mu}g/mL$. Reflux extraction showed all three compounds, chlorogenic acid ($26.19 \;{\mu}g/mL$), quercetin ($19.59 \;{\mu}g/mL$), and scopoletin ($17.4 \;{\mu}g/mL$). Therefore, the result of this study indicated that the potential antioxidant activities and functional values were obtained significantly with reflux extraction from noni fruit.
Physiological activities of unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf of Rubus coreanus Miquel were examined. Total polyphenolic compound content, electron donating ability (EDA), nitrite scavenging activity and SOD-like activity were examined using extracts of Rubus coreanus Miquel extracted with various extraction solvents such as 80% methanol, 75% acetone and water. The leaf part of Rubus coreanus Miquel included higher contents of total polyphenol compound compared with those of the other sample groups, unripened and ripened fruit. The total polyphenol compound content of leaf (100 g, dry base) extracted with 75% acetone showed the highest value of $5.06{\sim}5.87g$. As for EDA, unripened fruit showed over 90% of electron donating ability. No significant difference in EDA was found among the extracts prepared with various extraction solvents, 80% methanol, 75% acetone and water. Rubus coreanus Miquel extracts showed different nitrite scavenging abilities under different pH conditions. The nitrite scavenging abilities at pH 1.2 were in the range of $41.25{\sim}63.24%$ whereas they were $1.59{\sim}10.99%$ at pH 4.2 and $-2.84{\sim}7.94%$ at pH 6.0. The high levels of SOD-like activities were found in ripened fruit when different extracting methods were applied. Agar diffusion tests were accomplished to examine the antimicrobial activities of the extracts prepared from unripened fruit, ripened fruit and leaf with various extraction solvents. All of the extracts revealed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus whereas no antimicrobial activities were observed against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus.
Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Leguminosae) is a well-known herbal medicine that has long been valued as a demulcent to relieve inflammatory disorders. To compare the influence of different solvents on the anti-inflammatory efficacy of G. uralensis, we measured the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, TNF-$\alpha$, and $PGE_2$ in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells by extracts produced using different solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, or n-hexane). The results showed that methanol was the most effective solvent for the inhibition of both NO and $PGE_2$ production in RAW 264.7 cells. However, there was no difference among the extracts for inhibition of TNF-$\alpha$. Further study must be performed for the analysis of correlation between the anti-inflammatory activity of extracts produced using different solvents and the content of major bioactive compounds in G. uralensis, such as glycyrrhizin and liquiritin. The present study suggests that methanol may be a more appropriate solvent of G. uralensis than other solvents (water, ethanol, and n-hexane) to yield the greatest anti-inflammatory activity for food additives and medicine.
The effective extraction of antioxidative substances from soybean was investigated by using various solvents, such as water, ethanol, methanol, acetone, chloroform, benzene, ethyl acetate, ether, dichloromethane, and hexane. Extraction was performed by cold method at $30^{\circ}C$ and by reflux method at $85^{\circ}C$. The antioxidative effect of the extracts was determined by peroxide value during the oxidation of soybean oil containing the extracts at $105^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours, and also by TBARS(thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) formed during the peroxidation of egg lecithin liposomes. The antioxidant activity of the extracts from raw soybean was higher than that from defatted soybean. The antioxidant activity of the extracts by reflux method was higher than that by cold method. The methanol extract from defatted and roasted soybean(DRS) showed the highest antioxidative effect against oxidation of soybean oil, while the water extract from DRS in egg lecithin liposomes. In the peroxidation of egg lecithin liposomes, the antioxidative effect of polar solvents extracts were higher than those by nonpolar solvents extracts.

The comopositon of lipids extracted from corn embryo with various solvents were analyzed. The solvents for the extraction were benzene(BZ), n-hexane(HX), pet. ether(PE), trichlorethylene (TE), chloroform-methoanol(2:1, v/v) (CM), dichlormethane - methanol(2:1, v/v)(DM) and hexanediethyl ether(5:1, v/v)(HD). The lipids were than fractinated by silicis acid column chromatography(SACC) into three lipid fractions. The Neutral lipid fractons were further separated by thin layer chromatography(TLC) and the individual lipid spots were quantitatived by TLC scanner. And then the fatty acid compositions of total lipids and neutral lipids were determined by gas chromatography(GC). Crude oil contents of corn embryo were most efficient by using DM, CM and neutral lipid was extracted much HX, BZ, HD systems than did PE, DM, DM an CM were most efficient solvent systems for extracting glycolipid and phospholipid. The major component of the neutral lipid fractions was found to be triglyceride, and it was superior DM to PE. Linoleic acid was the predominant fatty acid in the total lipids, and it was most efficient with BZ and TE. The major fatty acid in neutral lipids was also linoleic acid and it was superior BZ to PE, CM, HD and oleic acid was similar to seven solvents and palmitic acid was found much superior in using CM.
