  • A human phantom of polyethylene has been designed and sculptured for studying the effective radiation safety control. The phantom has the approximate size of the Korean adult and was sliced into thirty-five transverse slabs, 2.5 cm thick, The relative dose at the specified position was determined from the exposure that a TLD badge worn on the surface of the phantom body received from external ${\gamma}$-ray. The variation of the exposure as a function of depth in the phantom was measured for uncollimated ${\gamma}$-ray using TLD rods, and also isodose curves were obtained for the anatomical cross-section of the critical organs of the body. To simulate radiation exposure condition in the nuclear facility, measurements were made for given angles of incident ${\gamma}$-ray. The front to back attenuation factor for human phantom of thickness 20 cm was 0.439 for Cs$^{137}$ ${\gamma}$-ray which is in reasonable agreement with the published data.

  • The more mobile technology evolves, the more users are trapped in mobile technology by being encouraging the replacement with state-of-the-art technology. However, the use of device is not entirely determined by technology's attributes itself. The meaning of smartness can be varied by 'how users accept and perceive immediate spatial perception from reality to mobile space' without recognizing the boundaries between them. This study focuses on the analysis of 'smart usage' for smartphone and this is verified the concept of 'smart usage' by the second-order measurement model. The result show that the concept organization of 'smart usage' had been differentiated and elicited by the six factors - 'multifunctional use readiness', 'administrative efficiency', 'embedded media', 'device connectivity', 'user-friendly optimization', and 'external connectivity(being connected). According to the conceptual factors, 'smart usage' can be explained in an individual's autonomous ability to control a mobile interface and to utilize a wide range of applications of smartphones.

  • Objective : This study was carried out to investigate effect of korean medicinal herbs-included hair tonic (MHT) and food (MF) on hair growth in an alopecia model of C57BL/6 mice. Methods : Six-weeks old mice were given laboratory rodent chow diet for 1 week. Then, we used a depilatory for hair removal on mice. The next day, mice were randomized and separated in 3 groups of 6 mice; normal group (N, vehicle epidermal application+normal diet-treated group), positive control group (C, 3% minoxidil sulfate epidermal application+normal diet-treated group), and the treatment group (T, HT epidermal application+ MF diet-treated group). The hair regrowth was determined by photograph, which was taken at 7, 14 and 21 days. And scoring indices, hair density and hair thickness, were evaluated by Folliscope at same day. In addition, the hair regrowth was analyzed insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in the dorsal skin of mice. Results : As a result, not only external appearance but also hair density and hair thickness on dorsal skin were increased more in C, T groups than in N group at 21 days with mixed treatment. Therefore, distinct regrowth pattern is appeared by treatment of herbal tonic and natural food for 21 days. Also, the expressions of IGF-1 on dorsal skin were higher in C, T groups than in N group. Conclusion : These results suggested that this herbal hair tonic and natural food has hair growth promoting activities and may be useful for treatment of bald or alopecia.

  • In this work, the calcium alginate microcapsules containing lemon oil were prepared by emulsification-internal gelation and their potential use as aromatherapy was examined by the controlled release system. The lemon oil encapsulated in the alginate was successfully observed by Fourier transform (FT-IR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. Analysis of the diameters and shapes of microcapsules was conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mean diameters ranging from 4 to 7 um and encapsulation yield ranging from 50 to $85\%$ were obtained. The controlled release of the lemon oil at $37^{circ}$ was demonstrated by the infrared moisture determination (IMDB). It was found that the amount of released lemon oil decreased with increasing concentrations of alginate and $CaCl_2$ due to the higher the cross-linking density of the capsules prepared. The oil release from the capsule was measured as a function of physical force. We confirmed that the external factor could control the collapse of capsule wall and the release rate.

  • Purpose: We reviewed the treatment outcomes and prognostic factors for patients with anal canal carcinoma who were treated with curative intent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) at Severance Hospital from 2005 to 2011. Materials and Methods: Data for 38 eligible patients treated during this period were reviewed. All patients were treated with curative intent using radiotherapy (RT) with (n = 35) or without concomitant chemotherapy (n = 3). Among 35 patients who received CRT, most of the chemotherapeutic regimens were either 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) plus mitomycin C (23 patients) or 5-FU plus cisplatin (10 patients). Recurrence-free survival (RFS), colostomy-free survival (CFS), overall survival (OS), and locoregional control (LRC) rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and survival between subgroups were compared using the log-rank test. Cox's proportional hazard model was used for multivariate analysis. Results: Over a median follow-up period of 44 months (range, 11 to 96 months), 3-year RFS, CFS, OS, and LRC were 80%, 79%, 85%, and 92%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, tumor size >4 cm was an independent predicting factor for poorer RFS (hazard ratio [HR], 6.35; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.42 to 28.5; p = 0.006) and CFS (HR, 6.25; 95% CI, 1.39-28.0; p = 0.017), while the presence of external iliac lymph node metastasis was an independent prognosticator for poorer OS (HR, 9.32; 95% CI, 1.24 to 70.3; p = 0.030). No treatment-related colostomies or deaths occurred during or after treatment. Conclusion: Curative intent CRT resulted in excellent outcomes that were comparable to outcomes in previous randomized trials. No severe treatment-related toxicities were observed.

  • In this paper, a discontinuous-conduction mode (DCM) DC-DC buck converter is presented for mobile device applications. The buck converter consists of compensator for stable operations, pulse-width modulation (PWM) logic, and power switches. In order to achieve small hardware form-factor, the number of off-chip components should be kept to be minimum, which can be realized with simple and efficient frequency compensation and digital soft start-up circuits. Burst-mode operation is included for preventing the efficiency from degrading under very light load condition. The DCM DC-DC buck converter is fabricated with 0.18-um BCDMOS process. Programmable output with external resistors is typically set to be 1.8V for the input voltage between 2.8 and 5.0V. With a switching frequency of 1MHz, measured maximum efficiency is 92.6% for a load current of 100mA.

  • In continuous hot dip galvanizing process, oxide formation on steel surface has an influence on Zn wetting. High strength automotive steel contains high amount of Si and Mn, where Si-Mn composite oxides such as $Mn_2SiO_4$ or $MnSiO_3$ covers the surface after annealing. Zn wetting depends on how the aluminothermia reaction can reduce the Mn-Si composite oxides and then form inhibition layer such as $Fe_2Al_5$ on the steel surface. The outward diffusion of metallic ions such as $Mn^{2+}$, $Si^{2+}$ in the steel matrix is very important factor for the formation of the surface oxides on the steel surface. The surface state and grain boundaries provide an important role for the diffusion and the surface oxide reactions. Some elements such as P, Sb, and B have a strong affinity for the interface precipitation, and it influence the diffusivity of metallic ions on grain boundaries. B oxide forms very rapildly on the steel surface during the annealing, and this promote complex oxides with $SiO_2$ or MnO. P has inter-reacted with other elements on the grain boundaries and influence the diffusion through on them. Small addition of Sb could suppress the decarburization from steel surface and retards the formation of internal and external selective oxides on the steel surface. Interface control by the trace elements such as Sb could be available to improve the Zn wettability during the hot dip galvanizing.

  • This study proposes a design model of the variable type resonator which corrects the temperature variance according to the season, in order to maximize the resonance effect in the Sacred bell of the Great King Seongdeok. In the bell, the 1st natural frequency (64 Hz) and the 2nd natural frequency (168 Hz) are the most important partial tones. Resonance conditions of the two components are determined for the internal acoustic cavity system, which consists of bell body cavity, gap and the resonator. Acoustic frequency response characteristics of the internal cavity are determined by the boundary element analysis using SYSNOISE. As an external factor, temperature variance according to the season largely influences the resonance condition and the length of the resonator should be controlled to maximize the resonance effect. As a measure, this study proposes a design model of the variable type resonator for the Sacred Bell of the Great King Seongdeok, which can control the length at the belfry according to the season.

  • Objectives : The objective of the present study was to investigate alexithymia in major depressive disorder(MDD) and subclinical depression(SCD). Methods : Three hundred eighty-six community-dwelling adults(238 females and 148 males, age 19-79; mean age $43.0{\pm}13.9$) were recruited. Structured clinical Interview for DSM-IV(SCID) was conducted for the diagnosis of MDD or other Axis I psychiatric disorders. The Center for Epidemiological Studies for Depression Scale(CES-D) and the Totonto Alexithymia Scale(TAS) were administered to assess depressive symptom and alexithymia, respectively. Among subjects without MDD, those who had minor depressive disorder on the SCID or high scores(i.e. over 16) on the CES-D were defined as subjects with SCD. TAS total score and factor I, II, III scores of TAS in MDD, SCD, and non-depressive controls were compared. Results : Among 386 subjects, 38 subjects(9.8%) were diagnosed as MDD by DSM-IV criteria, while 57 subjects(14.8%) were classified into SCD group. There were significant differences between 3 groups(MDD, SCD and non-depressive controls) in total score($F_{2,383}=14.0$, p<0.01), factor I(difficulty in identifying feeling)($F_{2,383}=23.4$, p<0.01) and factor II(difficulty in describing feeling)($F_{2,383}=7.8$, p<0.01), but not factor III(external oriented thinking)($F_{2,383}=1.8$, p=0.16) of TAS. In post-hoc analysis, both MDD subjects and SCD subjects had higher scores in TAS total, factor I and factor II, compared to non-depressive controls(all p<0.01). In contrast, there were no significant differences between MDD subjects and SCD subjects in any TAS factor. Conclusion : In this study, both MDD subjects and SCD subjects were more alexithymic than non-depressive control subjects. These findings suggest that SCD, as well as MDD, is also related to alexithymia.

  • Management of eyelid cancers is based on surgery and/or radiotherapy (RT). The treatment objective is to control tumors with acceptable functional and esthetic outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of radiation therapy in management of epithelial eyelid cancers, reviewing retrospectively the clinical records of patients treated in our institution from January 1989 to December 2013. We focused on clinical and histological features, treatment characteristics, tolerance and disease control. One hundred and eight patients (62 men and 46 women) were enrolled, with a mean age of 61 years [ranges 15-87]. The most frequent tumor location was the inner canthus (42.6%). Median tumor size was 21 mm [ranges 4-70]. Histological type was basal cell carcinoma in 88 cases (81.5%), squamous cell carcinoma in 16 (14.8%) and sebaceous carcinoma in 4 (3.7%). Radiation therapy was exclusive in 67 cases (62%) and post-operative for positive or close margins in the remaining cases. Kilovoltage external beam radiotherapy (KVRT) was used in 63 patients (58.3%) and low-dose-rate interstitial brachytherapy in 37 (34.3%). Eight (7.4%) were treated with cobalt or with a combination of KVRT-cobalt, KVRT-electron beams, KVRT-brachytherapy or cobalt-electron beams. The total delivered radiation doses were 70 Gy (2 Gy/fraction) in 62 patients (57.4%), 66 Gy (2 Gy/fraction) in 37 (34.3%) and 61.2 Gy (3.4Gy/fraction) in 9 (8.3%). After a median follow-up of 64 months, we noted 10 cases of local recurrences(9.2%): 7 after exclusive and 3 after post-operative RT. No local recurrence occurred in patients treated with brachytherapy. Actuarial 5-year local recurrence-free rate, disease-free survival and overall survival were respectively 90%, 90% and 97%. T-stage was found to be a significant factor for recurrence (p=0.047). All acute radiation-related reactions were scored grade I or II. Delayed effects were eye watering in 24 cases (22.2%), eye dryness in 19 (17.6%), unilateral cataract in 7 (6.4%) and ectropion in 4 (3.7%). Radiation therapy and especially brachytherapy is an efficient treatment of eyelid cancers, allowing eye conservation and functional preservation with good local control rates and acceptable toxicity.
