  • Reinforced earth retaining walls were developed in France in the 1970s and began to be applied in earnest to Korea in the 1990s. And now, about 1,300 reinforced soil retaining walls support the embankment of highways and bridge connections. The reinforced earth retaining wall construction technology has evolved day by day, and in recent years the reinforced earth retaining wall itself has been developed and introduced as a demonstration. However, various damages are constantly occurring in the reinforced earth retaining walls constructed throughout the highway. The cause of this was analyzed as minor defects in the design, construction, and maintenance stages. The solution for this is a change in perception of the importance of each individual process, but this does not form overnight. In this study, 30 years have passed since the introduction of the reinforced soil retaining wall on the highway, the damage cases were analyzed and categorized that have occurred in the reinforced soil retaining wall so far, and attempted to present a confrontation. As a result, the damage occurring on the reinforced soil retaining wall was divided into 10 types, and the causes and countermeasures in the design, construction, and maintenance stages for each were derived.

  • In the analysis of the effects of rock tunnel blasting vibration on adjacent existing buildings, the model of simplified equivalent load produces higher calculation result of vibration, due to the lack of consideration of the millisecond delay effect. This paper, based on the static force equivalence principle of blasting load, proposes a new determination method of equivalent load of blasting vibration. The proposed method, based on the elastic-static force equivalence principle of stress wave, equals the blasting loads of several single blastholes in the same section of millisecond blasting to the triangle blasting load curve of the exploded equivalent elastic boundary surface. According to the attenuation law of stress wave, the attenuated equivalent triangle blasting load curve of the equivalent elastic boundary is applied on the tunnel excavation contour surface, obtaining the final applied equivalent load. Taking the millisecond delay time of different sections into account, the time-history curve of equivalent load of the whole section applied on the tunnel excavation contour surface can be obtained. Based on Sailing Tunnel with small spacing on Sanmenxia-Xichuan Expressway, an analysis on the blasting vibration response of the later and early stages of the tunnel construction is carried out through numerical simulation using the proposed equivalent load model considering millisecond delay effect and the simplified equivalent triangle load curve model respectively. The analysis of the numerical results comparing with the field monitoring ones shows that the calculation results obtained from the proposed equivalent load model are closer to the measured ones and more feasible.

  • These investigations were performed to determine the causes of the reproductive disorders of the sows in a pig farm which was located at the distance 36m away from the detonation spot. The reproductive problems of the sows such as abortion and infertility occurred after consecutive detonation and use of heavy equipments to build 6 piers of the bridge for the expressway between Jinju and Taeieon during the period from July 1997 to October 1998. 1. The management condition of the farm, microorganism in the feed, inbreeding, hematological conditions, and viral agent causing abortion were not proved as the factors of the occurrence of abortion and infertility in the pig farm. 2. Theoretical concussion values according to the average amount of explosive per detonation were 1.16 kine for minimum amount (3.6 kg) and 3.45 kine for maximum amount(12.5 kg) of explosive, and the theoretical sound values were accordingly 92.29 decibel for minimum amount and 101.76 decibel for maximum amount of explosive, respectively, in the case of 36m distance between the detonation spot and pig farm. The frequency of detonation in a day was 7 times with interval of 15 minutes. 3. The occurence of infertility in the farm was 57.3% during the period of construction from July 1997 to August 1998. 4. In comparison of body weight of piglets between the damaged and not damaged farms, growth of piglets at the damaged farm was shown to be delayed over 30 days than those of not-damaged farm. In conclusion, abortion of 40 sows, delivery of whole still births of 22 sows, and infertility of 122 sows in the pig farm were assumed to be caused by the concussion or sound stress after consecutive detonation and use of heavy equipments.

  • This study proposes a model for road surface temperature prediction on basis of the heat-energy balance equation between atmosphere and road surface. The overall model is consisted of two types of modules: 1) Canopy 1 is used to describe heat transfer between soil surface and atmosphere; and 2) Canopy 2 can reflect the characteristics of pavement type. Input data used in the model run is obtained from the Korea Meteorological For model validation, the observed and predicted surface temperature data are compared using data collected on MoonEui Bridge along CheongWon-Sangju Expressway, and the comparison is made on winter and other seasons separately. Analysis results show that average difference between two temperatures lies within ${\pm}2^{\circ}C$ which is considered as appropriate from a micrometeorology point of view. The model proposed in this paper can be adopted as a useful tool in practical applications for winter maintenance. This study being a fundamental research is anticipated to be a starting point for further development of robust surface road temperature prediction algorithms.

  • The term "incident duration time" is defined as the time from the occurrence of incident to the completion of the handling process. Reductions in incident durations minimize damages by traffic accidents. This study aims to develop models to identify factors that influence incident duration by investigating traffic accidents on highways. For this purpose, four models were established including an integrated model (Model 1) incorporating all accident data and detailed models (Model 2, 3 and 4) analyzing accidents by location such as basic section, bridges and tunnels. The result suggested that the location of incident influences incident duration and the time of arrival of accident treatment vehicles is the most sensitive factor. Also, significant implications were identified with regard to vehicle to vehicle accidents and accidents by trucks, in night or in weekends. It is expected that the result of this study can be used as important information to develop future policies to manage traffic accidents.

  • The most effective factors that improve sections and elongate spans of the prestressed concrete girders are shapes of sections and strengths of concretes, and the concrete strength is more influenced to enhance the allowable tensile strength on top and bottom fibers than increasing of flexural strength of girders. In this study, 60 MPa high-strength prestressed concretes were constructed at the Wonsoo Bridge where in the 1st section of expanding constructions of the Nonsan to Junjoo Expressway, the high-strength concrete was placed on the eight- 35 meters simple span IPC girders of four lanes of Nonsan direction. During casting of girder concretes, quality controls were carried out with continuing controls of surface moistures and corrections of the unit water using the air-meter methods right after batching. It was confirmed that compressive strengths of girder concretes ensure the target strength and the heat of hydrations of girder concrete were measured. Though using same materials and constructing methods, there're a wide range of strengths of each girder, so, when high-strength concretes cast in the place hereafter, a countermove should be prepared.

  • The essential information elements for the Earthquake Damage Evaluation System (EDES) of highway bridges are defined in this study, and a database construction method, which fits the circumstances of Korea, is proposed. The information elements for the EDES of highway bridges are categorized in two groups: structure related information, location related information. The structure related information is composed of the fragility curve information which is necessary for earthquake damage evaluation of highway bridges. The data structure of road network, which represents the location related information, is defined in more detail than the existing GIS-based data structure of road network for modeling of junctions. A pilot GIS-based EDES subjected to 110 bridges on expressway in Korea is developed, and it is verified that the proposed database construction method for the EDES can be used to develop a decision making system for quick retrofitting of the seismic damages of highway bridges and road network.

  • The expansion joint is installed to offset the expansion of the superstructure and must ensure sufficient gap during its service life. In detailed guideline of safety inspection and precise safety diagnosis for bridge, damage due to lack or excessive gap is specified, but there are insufficient standards for determining the abnormal behavior of superstructures. In this study, a data-based maintenance was proposed by continuously monitoring the expansion-gap data of the same expansion joint. A total of 2,756 data were collected from 689 expansion joint, taking into account the effects of season. We have developed a method to evaluate changes in the expansion joint-gap that can analyze the thermal movement through four or more data at the same location, and classified the factors that affect the superstructure behavior and analyze the influence of each factor through deep learning and explainable artificial intelligence(AI). Abnormal behavior of the superstructure was classified into narrowing and functional failure through the expansion joint-gap evaluation graph. The influence factor analysis using deep learning and explainable AI is considered to be reliable because the results can be explained by the existing expansion gap calculation formula and bridge design.

  • This study had targeted the Manjong Junction~Hongchun interchange section of Jungang highway in order to analyze the efficiency and improvement of the highway wild-life fences. Being analyzed wild-life fence as an effective facility for the prevention of road-kill, it had founded that the wild animals did not jump over even the two layer guardrail, concrete barrier and noise barrier, fence for rock fall. For the section with high road-kill decrease effect after installing the wild-life fence, the effect was higher at wild-life fence with the height of 1.0m where the door had not been installed and the well connected points of road facility than the area with fence height of 1.5m. The road-kill decrease effect was also high at the well managed areas even if the door has not been installed. Also, road-kill had occurred by concentrating around the end of wild-life fence after installing the fence, Moreover road-kill had also occurred around the cutting section. The door of wild-life fence had higher amount of road-kill occurrence as the installation interval was closer. it was analyzed that the door management has a lot of effect on road-kill decrease. The fence for rock fall, two layer guardrail and concrete barrier having the effect of wild-life fence installed on the road would have to be installed by connecting with wild-life fences through proper facility improvement. Although the door should not be installed if possible, it should be installed as automatic door or gravity door to prevent the door from leaving the door open. An escape route has to be formed for the prompt escape away from the road for the animals entered through the ending section of the fence. The eco-corridor has to be made by restoring the soil layer of dual purpose eco-corridor forming a planting area. Also, the dead body after the accident has to be disposed to the outer section of the road immediately in order to prevent the secondary road-kill by the predator from the road-kill. The fence has to be installed as 500m or longer in both ways, in other words 1,000m or longer, from the targeted spot of minimum accident prevention while connecting up to the bridge or box culvert, etc that are next road facilities if possible to guide wild animals safely to the eco-corridor.

  • As Internet technology further develops, a social networking service (SNS) also develops. But most studies on SNS are not appropriate for business purposes since they mainly focus on personal characteristics. Unlike previous studies, however, this study tries to understand the effect of SNS on performance in the perspective of business. As the result of analysis, SNSE(Social Networking Service Engagement) appears to have positive effect on TMC(Transactive Memory Capability) and PER(Performance), and TMC also seems to affect PER. On the assumption that there should be some parameters between SNSE and PER that earlier studies did not consider, this study has proved that a new way of memories, or TMC, forms the bridge between SNS and PER. It also found out that the time spent on SNS is positively controlled when SNSE affects TMC. These results are different from those of the previous studies arguing that SNS has nothing to do with PER.
