  • Neutrophils play an important role in the initiation of innate immunity against infection and injury. Although many different types of G-protein coupled receptors are functionally expressed in neutrophils, no reports have demonstrated functional expression of umami taste receptor in these cells. We observed that mouse neutrophils express the umami taste receptor T1R1/T1R3 through RNA sequencing and quantitative RT-PCR analysis. Stimulation of mouse neutrophils with L-alanine or L-serine, which are ligands for the umami taste receptor, elicited not only ERK or p38 MAPK phosphorylation but also chemotactic migration. Moreover, addition of L-alanine or L-serine markedly reduced the production of several cytokines including $TNF-{\alpha}$ induced by lipopoly-saccharide (LPS) through inhibition of $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity or STAT3 phosphorylation in neutrophils. Our findings demonstrate that neutrophils express the umami taste receptor, through which tastants stimulate neutrophils, resulting in chemotactic migration, and attenuation of LPS-induced inflammatory response.

  • PURPOSES: The aim of this paper is developing user-oriented flexible Level Of Service (LOS) system for integrated asset management of various road facilities. It is essential to overcome limitations of general management systems which only focus on a type of assets (e.g. pavement, bridge etc.), and to serve a customizable LOS platform for smooth implementation and future improvement of the LOS considering various managerial environments of road agencies. METHODS: This study suggested a total framework of the LOS system as a process for self-development, operation and improvement of LOS system to conduct the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) in management process. In the process, we adopted user-customizable elements regarding asset definition, service index and evaluation method to match with the managerial environment of road agencies. In addition, we conducted an empirical study on the entire process of the suggested LOS system with a real road agency (Korea Express Highway) to prove applicability of the LOS system. RESULTS: From the empirical study, we confirmed that the suggested LOS system framework were suitable for development of customized LOS system. In addition, evaluation of asset conditions by LOS ratings, and quantification of vision achievement of the Korea Express Highway were successfully made. It would be the first trial in integrated management approach with LOS systems for numerous road facilities. CONCLUSIONS : It was recognized that easy application and sustainable improvement of the LOS was the most critical point in asset management. The suggested LOS system would be a powerful weapon as a managerial tool in preparing tight budget, aging infrastructures, and increased demands for more accountability both in Korea and internationally. Implementation of the LOS system needs to be expanded to the other infrastructure members to serve satisfactory level of service to taxpayers.

  • The planning process of complex projects in tall building is characterized by the cooperation of many involved specialists and by a high degree of information exchange. In order to improve the quality of the structural design of tall buildings, information of different involved partners in the planning process has to be integrated. This paper aims to introduce a concept of the integrated structural design for the tall building using STEP(Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data). In this study, the entities of mass, column shortening, and serviceability evaluation for structural design in tall buildings are proposed.

  • The initial irreversible capacity, $Q_i$, is one of the parameters to express the material balancing of the cathode to anode. We introduced new terms, which are the initial intercalation Ah efficiency (IIE) and the initial irreversible specific capacity at the surface ($Q_{is}$), to express precisely the irreversibility of an electrode/electrolyte system. Two terms depended on kinds of active-materials and compositions of the electrode, but did not change with charging state. MPCF had the highest value of IIE and the lowest value of $Q_{is}$ in 1M $LiPE_6$/EC + DEC (1 : 1 volume ratio) electrolyte. IIE value of $LiCoO_2$ electrode was 97-98%, although the preparation condition of the material and the electrolyte were different. $Q_{is}$ value of $LiCoO_2$ was 0~1 mAh/g. MPCF-$LiCoO_2$ cell system had the lowest of the latent capacity. $Q_{is}$ value increased slightly by adding conductive material. IIE and $Q_{is}$ value varied with the electrolyte. By introducing PC to EC+DEC mixed solvent, IIE values were retained, but $Q_{is}$ increased. In case of addition of MP, IIE value increased and $Q_{is}$ value also increased a little.

  • This study is concerned with implementing an external memory expansion device for large-scale image processing. It consists of an external memory adapter card with a PCI(Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express Gen3 x8 interface mounted on a graphics workstation for image processing and an external memory board with external DDR(Dual Data Rate) memory. The connection between the memory adapter card and the external memory board is made through the optical interface. In order to access the external memory, both Programmable I/O and DMA(Direct Memory Access) methods can be used to efficiently transmit and receive image data. We implemented the result of this study using the boards equipped with Altera Stratix V FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) and 40G optical transceiver and the test result shows 1.6GB/s bandwidth performance.. It can handle one channel of 4K UHD(Ultra High Density) image. We will continue our study in the future for showing bandwidth of 3GB/s or more.

  • In this paper, we propose a single framework based on the MPM(Material Point Method) that can represent the dynamic angular motion of the elementary particle unit. In this study, the particles can have various shapes while also describing linear and angular motion. As a result, unlike other particle-based simulations, which only represent linear movements of spherical (e.g. Circle, Sphere) particles, it is possible to express the visually dynamic motion of them. The proposed framework utilizes MPM, due to the fact that rotational motion can be decomposed and derived from large deformation. During the integration process of the presented technique, a deformation gradient tensor is decomposed by polar decomposition theory for extracting rotation tensor. By applying this together with the linear motion of each particle, as a result, it is possible to simultaneously express the angluar and linear motion of the particle itself. To verify the proposed method, we show the simulation of rotating particles scattering in the wind field, and the interaction(e.g. Collision) between a moving object and them by comparing the traditional MPM

  • The key to development of barnase-barstar transgene based hybrid seed technology is the availability of tightly regulated tapetum specific promoter, as any leaky expression of the barnase gene leads to several unintended effects. In the present study, we used two different tapetum specific promoters i.e. promoter of the RTS gene isolated from rice cultivar IR64 and the OsG6b promoter from japonica rice cultivar Hayayuki to express the barnase gene in rice transgenic lines. While viable male sterile transgenic lines could not be obtained with RTS promoter we could develop single copy male sterile lines when the barnase gene was expressed under the OsG6b promoter.

  • A laboratory bioassay that incorporates Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) purified crystal protein toxins into an artificial diet has identified three toxins, CryIA(b), CryIA(c), and CryIIA, to by effective against the yellow stemborer, Scirpophaga incertulas(Walker). Research is aimed at engineering rice that incorporates genes of one of or more of these toxins so as to mimic the insecticidal action of the insect to Bt. The paper discusses potential strategies for slowing the rate of adaptation that include the use of multiple Bt toxins, promoters that express the toxins only in specific plant tissues at specific times, and mixing transgenic and non-transgenic plants.

  • The System identification is the process of developing or improving a mathematical model of a physical system using experimental data of the input, output and noise relationship. The field of system identification has been an important discipline within the automatic control area. The reason is the requirement that mathematical models having a specified accuracy must be used to apply modem control methods. In this paper, it is confirmed that we can obtain transfer function of flexible beam that is expressed in the forms of identified state-space system matrix A, B, C, D and identified observer gain G using Eigensystem Realization Algorithm including singular value decomposition. And these matrices can be applied to the automatic control. In addition to, it is also confirmed that transfer function can express a system using identified observer gain G, in spite of a noisy data or a periodic disturbance.
