  • Even though a number of historic structures in Korea need to be repaired, an intensive research on their engineering performance has rarely been investigated. Herein, we attempted to provide a methodological approach via the explicit finite element analysis to investigate geotechnical aspect of the performance of the dry-stone wall structures. To do so, we summarized relevant literature on the world-wide historic stone structures as well as its analysis in terms of modern geotechnical engineering. The method of the explicit finite element analysis has been briefly summarized. The numerical results on an idealized block structure show that the displacement of blocks and the distribution of earth pressure is different from the conventional theory of the retaining wall because of the discrete nature of the dry-stone wall structure.

  • With the advent of high-speed communications networks, many authentication and access control systems are being introduced to combat network security issues like system hacking. But the fact is that the security systems for protecting information used in these networks are themselves weak. In response to the mounting demands of existing users, there is a clear need for a new authentication system that provides both safety and reliability. This research presents an authentication method with excellent access authorization (explicit and implicit authentication) and safety performance, demonstrated through its use in online networks.

  • The dynamic explicit finite element method and the static implicit finite element method are applied effectively to analyze total auto-body panel stamping processes, which include the forming stage , the trimming stage and the spring-back stage.\The explicit time integration method has better merits in the forming stage including highly complicated three-dimensional contact conditions. On the contrary, the implicit time integration method is better for analyzing spring-back since the complicated contact conditions are removed and the computing time to get the final static state is short. In this work, brief descriptions of the formulation and the factor study are presented. Further, the simulated results for the total auto-body panel stamping processes are shown and discussed. The formability and the weld line movement in stamping with Tailor Welded Blanks were investigated through QTR-OTR-FRT.

  • This paper is focused on the formulation of explicit closed-form functions describing the performance measures of the general flexible manufacturing system (FMS)according to the strategy of material handling system(MHS). the performance measures such as the production rate, the production lead-time and the utilization rate of the general FMS are expressed, respectively, as the explicit closed-form functions of the part processing time, the service rate of the material handling system (MHS) and the number of machine tools in the FMS. For this, the gensral FMS is presented as a generalized stochastic Petri net model, then, the moment generating function (MGF) based approach is applied to obtain the steady-state probabity formulation. Based on the steady-state formulation, the explicit closed-form functions for performance measures of the probability FMS can be obtained. Finally, the analytical results are compared with the Petri net simulation results to verify the validity of the suggested method. The paper is of significance in the sense that it provides a comprehensive formula for performance measures of the FMS even to the industry engineers and academic reademic resuarchers who have no background on Markov chain analysis method or Petrinet modeling

  • Wave lengths of tsunamis are shorter than those of tides, and the dispersion effect of tsunamis is relatively strong. Thus, it should be properly considered in the numerical simulation of distant tsunami propagation for better accuracy. In the present study an active dispersion-correction scheme using explicit scheme is developed to take into account the dispersion effect in the simulation of tsunami propagation using one-dimensional finite element method based on wave equation. The validity of the dispersion-correction scheme proposed in this study is confirmed through the comparision of numerical solutions calculated using the present scheme with analytical ones considering dispersion effect of waves.

  • The spin-up and the spring-back are most severe load cases in the aircraft landing gear design. These load cases are caused by reciprocal action of complex physical phenomenon such as the friction between a tire and ground, inertia of the rotation of a tire and the flexibility of a landing gear structure. Generally, the empirical formula or the theoretical formula is used to calculate the spin-up and spring-back load in the early stage of the development program of the aircraft landing gear. After the materialization of the design of a landing gear, spin-up and spring-back load are acquired by the free drop test. In this study, the spin-up and the spring-back load of the rubber shock absorber type KC-100 nose landing gear are calculated by the explicit finite element analysis. Through this analysis, more accurate and realistic spin-up and spring back loads could be applied to the early phase of the development of the aircraft landing gear.

  • In this paper the unsteady fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with large structural displacement are solved by partitioned solution approaches in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element framework. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the characteristic-based split (CBS) scheme. Both a rigid body and a geometrically nonlinear solid are considered as the structural models. The latter is solved by Newton-Raphson procedure. The equation governing the structural motion is advanced by Newmark-${\beta}$ method in time. The dynamic mesh is updated by using moving submesh approach that cooperates with the ortho-semi-torsional spring analogy method. A mass source term (MST) is introduced into the CBS scheme to satisfy geometric conservation law. Three partitioned coupling strategies are developed to take FSI into account, involving the explicit, implicit and semi-implicit schemes. The semi-implicit scheme is a mixture of the explicit and implicit coupling schemes due to the fluid projection splitting. In this scheme MST is renewed for interfacial elements. Fixed-point algorithm with Aitken's ${\Delta}^2$ method is carried out to couple different solvers within the implicit and semi-implicit schemes. Flow-induced vibrations of a bridge deck and a flexible cantilever behind an obstacle are analyzed to test the performance of the proposed methods. The overall numerical results agree well with the existing data, demonstrating the validity and applicability of the present approaches.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient explicit rate (ER) feedback switch algorithm for available bit rate (ABR) flow control. In order to improve the disadvantages of existing ER feedback switch algorithms with congestion avoidance, the proposed scheme adjusts the target utilization dynamically according to the queue length and its growth rate. also, we investigate the performance of the proposed switch algorithm and compare it with ERICA and NIST switches using simulation. Simulation results show that the proposed switch algorithm can control the cell emission rate of a source rapidly according to variations of available link bandwidth by using dynamic adaptation of target utilization. It also exhibits a better performance than the existing ER feedback switches in terms of queue length and link utilization.

  • Tungsten heavy metal is characterized bi a high density and novel combination of strength and ductility. Among them, 90W-7Ni-3Fe is used for applications, where the high specific weight of the material plays an important role. They are used as counterweights, rotating inertia members, as well as for defense purposes(kinetic energy penetrators, etc.). Because of these applications, it is essential to detemine the dynamic characteristics of tungsten alloy. In this paper, Explicit FEM(finite element method) is employed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of tungsten heavy metal under base of stress wave propagation theory for SHPB, and the model of specimen is divided into two parts to understand the phenomenon that stress wave penetrates through each tungsten base and matrix. This simulation results were compared to experimental one and through this program the dynamic stress-strain curve of tungsten heavy metal can be obtained using quasi static stress-strain curve of pure tungsten and matrix.

  • Numerical boundary conditions are as important as the governing equations when analyzing the fluid flows numerically. An explicit boundary condition method updates the solutions at the boundaries with extrapolation from the interior of the computational domain, while the implicit boundary condition method in conjunction with an implicit time integration method solves the solutions of the entire computational domain including the boundaries simultaneously. The implicit boundary condition method, therefore, is more robust than the explicit boundary condition method. In this paper, steady compressible 2-Dimensional Navier-Stokes solver is developed. We present the implicit boundary condition method coupled with LU-SGS(Lower Upper Symmetric Gauss Seidel) method. Also, the explicit boundary condition method is implemented for comparison. The preconditioning Navier-Stokes equations are solved on unstructured meshes. The numerical computations for a number of flows show that the implicit boundary condition method can give accurate solutions.
