  • The adoption of expert systems mainly as operator supporting systems is becoming increasingly popular as the control algorithms of system become more and more sophisticated and complicated. The verification phase of knowledge base is an important part for developing reliable expert systems, especially in nuclear industry. Although several strategies or tools have been developed to perform potential error checking, they often neglect the reliability of verification methods. Because a Petri net provides a uniform mathematical formalization of knowledge base, it has been employed for knowledge base verification. In this work, we devise and suggest an automated tool, called COKEP(Checker Of Knowledge base using Extended Petri net), for detecting incorrectness, inconsistency, and incompletensess in a knowledge base. The scope of the verification problem is expanded to chained errors, unlike previous studies that assume error incidence to be limited to rule pairs only. In addition, we consider certainty factor in checking, because most of knowledge bases have certainty factors.

  • This study analyzed recruiting system, competence requirement system, promotion system by competence verification, and expert training system in fire officials of the Tokyo Fire Department. The recruiting system is classified into expert and Grade 1, 2, and 3 and all grades are appointed as a fire fighter. According to the competence requirement system, while in office, fire officials who have a certain qualification defined in the recruiting system can change their recruiting classification according to their ability such as Grade $3{\rightarrow}$Grade 2 or 1 or expert, Grade $2{\rightarrow}1$ or expert, or Grade $1{\rightarrow}$expert. The promotion system requires working hard, capability suitable to their grade, and careful verification. Also, a variety of on-site training and qualification systems are provided to reinforce professionalism of staffs and executives.

  • Rule-based knowledge representHtion is, the most popular technique for ,storage and manipulation of domain knowledge in expert system. By the way, the amount of knowledge increases more and more in this representatiun technique, it, relationship becomes complex, and even its contents can be modified. This is the reason why rule-based knowledge representation technique requires a verification ,system which can maintain consistency and completeness of knowledge base. This paper is to propose a verification system for consistency and completeness of knowledge base to promote the efficiency and reliability of expert system. After verifying the potential errors both in structure and in semantics whenever a new rule is added, this system renders knowledge base consistent and complete by correcting them automatically or by making expert correct them if it fails.

  • With the development of computers, CAD(Computer-Aided-Design)/CAM (Computer-Aided-Manufacturing) has been increasingly applied to manufacturing processes to increase productivity, and recently studies of expert systems, a field of Al(Artificial Intelligence), are being carried out to assist process designs. In this study, an expert system for the process design of ball stud was developed. The adequacy of the developed system was examined through comparisons with actual blueprints and verification by experts. The designed process data was saved in dxf file format for transfer to AutoCAD, from which prototype process blueprints were obtained.

  • Verification is a process aimed at demonstrating whether a system meets it's specified requirements. As expert systems are used in various applications, the knowledge base verification of systems fakes an important position. The conventional Petri net approach that has been studied recently in order to verify the knowledge base is found that it is inadequate to verify the knowledge base of large and complex system, such as alarm processing system of nuclear power plant. Thus, we propose an improved method that models the knowledge base as enhanced colored Petri net. In this study. we analyze the reachability and the error characteristics of the knowledge base and apply the method to verification of simple knowledge base.

  • Rules in expert system have meaning of assigning never-happen-minterms. Overall logical relations of variables can be achived by making all prime implicants of never-happen-minterms. From prime implicants, two tables, which are necessary in the process of inference, are constructed. There are two inferencing modes. One excutes inference only one variable which the user is interested in, and the other excutes inference all variables simultaneously. Outputs of inference have not only 'true' or 'false' but also 'unknown' which is different from conventional expert system. In this paper, an efficient approach is presented, which can check logical inconsistency in knowledge base and contradiction between input facts and rules. The methods in the paper may be available in the field of diagnosis and alarm processing.

  • This paper presents the use of an evert system to automate process planning of block assembly, a task that is usually completed manually. In order to determine the sequence of assembly operation, a search method guided by rules, such as merging of related operations, grouping of similar operations, and precedence rules based on know-hows and geometrical reasoning, is used. In this paper, the expert system developed is explained in detail regarding a global database, control strategies, and rule bases. For verification purposes, the evert system has been applied to simple examples. Since the rule bases are isolated from the inference engine in the developed system, it is easy to add more rules in the future.

  • In this paper we mention the optimization of MPEG-4 VM (Moving Picture Expert Group-4 Verification Model) GA (General Audio) AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) encoder and the design of the decoder for PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) using MPEG-4 VM source. We profiled the VMC source and several optimization methods have applied to those selected functions from the profiling. Intel Pentium III 600 MHz PC, which uses windows 98 as OS, takes about 20 times of encoding time compared to input sample running time, with additional options, and about 10 times without any option. Decoding time on PDA was over 35 seconds for the 17 seconds input sample. After optimization, the encoding time has reduced to 50% and the real time decoding has achieved on PDA.

  • The purpose of this study is to conceptualize the definition of school readiness specific to the context of the Republic of Korea. The school readiness test can be used as basic data to enable early childhood educational institutes to determine the general readiness of preschoolers and provide support to fit individual characteristics. For this purpose, six stages of the school readiness development process were considered, that is, draft development, primary preliminary survey, primary expert verification, secondary expert verification, secondary preliminary survey, and main survey. In the main survey, tests were conducted using the school readiness final draft targeting 344 preschoolers living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The item discrimination power analysis and factor analysis for the examination area and question area were also conducted. Consequently, a test tool was developed on the basic of the results obtained, consisting of 129 items in the five areas of knowledge, function, adaptation, tendency, and attitude. The knowledge area was divided into general, linguistic, and mathematical knowledge, and the function area into fine motor function, basic living ability, expressive function, and gross motor function. The adaptation area was classified into adaptation activity, separation anxiety, maladaptive behavior, and environment adaptation; the tendency area into learning tendency; others understanding, and individual tendency, and the attitude area into rule compliance and life habits.
