This study surveyed 57,303 teenagers using the 15th (2019) online Juvenile Health Behavior survey data to understand the relationship between oral health behavior, mental health, and smoking. The results of analyzing the factors affecting smoking experience are as follows: The smoking rate was higher in men (p<0.001), in a lower academic ability (p<0.001), and in moderate economic status was moderate (p<0.001). The smoking rate was higher in 2 or less brushing frequency (p<0.001), in no brushing before going to bed (p<0.001), in no brushing aftger lunch (p<0.001), in no experience of oral health education (p<0.001), and when the subjests felt unhealty in oral health (p<0.001). The smoking rate was significantly higher in those who experienced a lot of stress (p<0.001) and feelings of depression (p<0.001). The odds ratio for smoking was 1.44 when not brushing teeth before bedtime, 0.76 in experience of oral health education, and 1.29 in unhealthy subjective oral health. The odds ratio for smoking was 0.91 in no stress and 1.85 in depression. Since oral behavior and mental health affect smoking, intervening with these factors is necessary to quit smoking.
The purpose of this study was to identify the correlations between disease related factors and disturbance of daily living in patients with fibromyalgia. A descriptive survey study design was used. Data were collected from 45 out patients diagnosed of fibromyalgia according to the conditions by American College of Rheumatology in I-city. The mean score of tender points were 15.00, fatigue was 8.67, quality of sleep was 12.94 and depression was 23.70. They have struggled with fibromyalgia for 6 years on an average. Among patients, 42.2% had to discontinue their job/learning due to their disease, and experienced a disturbance of daily living for 41.79 days during last 3 months. There were significant positive correlations between disturbance of daily living and tender points, depression, between fatigue and depression, quality of sleep, between quality of sleep and depression. As a result, fibromyalgia patients suffered from various disease related factors and disturbance of daily living. Therefore, it can be suggested that the consideration of these related factors is important to develope intervention program for the better qualified life of the patients.

Purpose: This study was done to clarify the effects of foot reflexology on peripheral neuropathy, symptom distress, anxiety and depression in cancer patients treated with oxaliplatin. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed. Changes in the variables were evaluated to test the effects of foot reflexology. Participants were cancer patients treated with oxaliplatin (experimental group 14 and control group 17). Peripheral neuropathy, symptom distress, anxiety and depression were measured before and after reflexology. Data were collected from October, 2010 to April, 2011. ${\chi}^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the data. Results: The experimental group who received foot reflexology experienced less peripheral neuropathy and symptom distress than the control group. There was no difference in anxiety and depression between the experimental and control group. Conclusion: The foot reflexology program adopted in this study was found to be an effective method to reduce peripheral neuropathy and symptom distress. We recommend foot reflexology for patients with chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy.

Objectives: This study was conducted to compare emotional problems in children with neurosurgical diseases prior to surgery as well as levels of parenting stress experienced by mothers of children treated with surgery and those without surgery. The goals was to provide a basis on which comprehensive treatment interventions could be established. Methods: Subjects included 78 elementary school children who visited the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery as well as their mothers. The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the Revised Children Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS) were administered to children. The Parenting Stress Indexs (PSI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to their mothers. Results: The children with neurosurgical diseases showed higher levels of depression prior to surgery. In their mothers, parenting stress was relatively higher and parenting competence was lower. In particular, for those children who underwent surgery, depression was significantly higher. Specifically, they exhibited more negative expectations, and negative self-image. In mothers of children who underwent surgery, depression was significantly higher. Conclusion: Our results suggest higher levels of emotional distress and parental stress in children who undergo neurosurgical operations and their mothers, respectively. Based on this, the necessity for surgical and comprehensive psychological intervention is suggested.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to examine the association between the children's psychopathology and age, intellectual quotient, and parental psychopathology in children with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: The emotional and behavioral problems of 35 children with PTSD (23 boys, 12 girls, mean age, $10.26{\pm}2.47$ years) were investigated by retrospective chart review. Their parents' anxiety and depression symptoms were also investigated. We examined the correlations between children's psychopathology and their parents' anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as their age and IQ. Results: There were positive correlations between maternal trait anxiety and depression, and children's emotional problems. State and trait anxiety of children with PTSD were positively correlated with age, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms were negatively correlated with age. Conclusion: Our results suggest that psychiatric manifestation of children who experienced trauma could differ according to the development stage, and the treatment of children with PTSD should involve parental education about the effect of maternal emotional states on children.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between stigma, distress, and quality of life (QOL) in patients with lung cancer. Methods: The subjects of the study were 123 lung cancer patients who visited the outpatient department of S hospital in Seoul from July 21st to August 29th, 2011. To measure stigma, distress, and QOL, Cataldo Lung Cancer Stigma Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and EORTC QLQ-C30 (Quality of Life Questionnaire, Core 30) were used in this study. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, average, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation with SPSS WIN 19.0. Results: Stigma showed positive correlations with anxiety, depression, and symptom (r=.37, p<.001; r=.44, p<.001; r=.23 p=.012), while it showed negative correlations with global QOL and function (r=-.26, p=.003; r=-.40, p<.001). Anxiety and depression also positively correlated with symptoms (r=.43, p<.001; r=.58, p<.001) while anxiety and depression negatively correlated with global QOL (r=-.40, p<.001; r=-.56, p<.001) and function (r=-.64, p<.001; r=-.66, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of the study demonstrated that lung cancer patients experienced stigma and distress that had a negative influence on the subjects' QOL. Thus the study's findings can be useful in developing psychosocial nursing strategies to improve QOL of lung cancer patients in the future.
Previous studies have demonstrated that repeated restraint stress in rodents produces increases in depression and anxiety-like behaviors and alters the expression of corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) in the hypothalamus. The current study focused on the impact of Bupleurum falcatum (BF) extract administration on repeated restraint stress-induced behavioral responses using the forced swimming test (FST) and elevated plus maze (EPM) test. Immunohistochemical examinations of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression in rat brain were also conducted. Male rats received daily doses of 20, 50, or 100 mg/kg (i.p.) BF extract for 15 days, 30 min prior to restraint stress (4 h/day). Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activation in response to repeated restraint stress was confirmed base on serum corticosterone levels and CRF expression in the hypothalamus. Animals that were pre-treated with BF extract displayed significantly reduced immobility in the FST and increased open-arm exploration in the EPM test in comparison with controls. BF also blocked the increase in TH expression in the locus coeruleus of treated rats that experienced restraint stress. Together, these results demonstrate that BF extract administration prior to restraint stress significantly reduces depression and anxiety-like behaviors, possibly through central adrenergic mechanisms, and they suggest a role for BF extract in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.
Purpose: The study was conducted to identify the effects of holistic breathing using biofeedback on fatigue, depression, and sleep disorders of hemodialysis patients. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design and pre-post tests. Data were collected from August 20, 2012 to April 6, 2013. Twenty-five patients were assigned to an experimental group and twenty-five patients were assigned to a control group. Holistic breathing using biofeedback was applied during hemodialysis in a hospital with a frequency of twice a week for five weeks. Patients practiced 10 minutes of the holistic breathing twice daily for while at home. Chi-square and t-test were utilized for analyzing the data using SPSS 18.0. Results: Hemodialysis patients who practiced the holistic breathing using biofeedback experienced significantly lower levels of fatigue (t=2.612, p=.012), depression (t=3.390, p=.001), and sleep disorders (t=2.016, p=.049) when compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results indicate that the holistic breathing using biofeedback is an effective nursing intervention for patients receiving hemodialysis for the management of fatigue, depression, and sleep disorders.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the realities related with the in-home falls of the elderly and also the factors that affect on the fails. Method: The data collection was carried out from January 10 to 13, 2005. The subjects of this study were 201 in-home elderly people over age 60 who resided at G city of Jeollabuk-do. Result: The following are the results from the analysis of collected data with using the SPSS program. 1. The number of people who experienced fall injuries was 51.7% within three years. Most cases of falls occurred in winter (52.4%), on roads (52.9%), wearing sports shoes (56.7%), when walking (56.7%), loosing their balance (54.8%), and slipping (54.8%). 2. The factors yielding the difference between the groups of elderly with the experience of fail injury and the group of elderly with no experience of falls showed a statistical significance for gender (p=.000), last academic career (p=.049), and number of people in the family (p=.041). 3. Among the factors related with health, the factors yielding the difference between the group of elderly with the experience of falls and the group of elderly with no experience of fails showed statistical significance for drinking (p=.015), dizziness (p=.000) and level of drug intakes (p=.015). 4. The elderly with the experience of fall injury as compared with the group of aged people with no experience of falls showed a higher degree of depression (p=.009). 5. From the result of logistic regression analysis to explore the factors affecting the experience of fall injury, it was found that there was a significant result for gender (p=.002) and depression (p=.018). Women as compared with men and the elderly with depression showed a higher rate of danger in falls. Conclusion: Based on the above results, it is expected that fall prevention programs are needed with regard to the general characteristics and health related characteristics, that is, the individual danger factors should be focused on such depression and gender as being the most important variables affecting the experience of falls.
