  • Biomass expansion factors, which convert timber volume (or dry weight) to biomass, are used for estimating the forest biomass and accounting for the carbon budget at a regional or national scale. We estimated the biomass conversion and expansion factors (BCEF), biomass expansion factors (BEF), root to shoot ratio (R), and ecosystem biomass expansion factor (EBEF) for Quercus mongolica Fisch. and Quercus variabilis Bl. forests based on publications in Korea. The mean BCEF, BEF, and R for Q. mongolica was 1.0383 Mg/$m^3$ (N = 27; standard deviation [SD], 0.5515), 1.3572 (N = 27; SD, 0.1355), and 0.2017 (N = 32; SD, 0.0447), respectively. The mean BCEF, BEF, and R for Q. variabilis was 0.7164 Mg/$m^3$ (N = 17; SD, 0.3232), 1.2464 (N = 17; SD, 0.0823), and 0.1660 (N = 8; SD, 0.0632), respectively. The mean EBEF, as a simple method for estimating the ground vegetation biomass, was 1.0216 (N = 7; SD, 0.0232) for Q. mongolica forest ecosystems, and 1.0496 (N = 8; SD, 0.0725) for Q. variabilis forest ecosystems. The biomass expansion factor values in this study may be better estimates of forest biomass in Q. mongolica or Q. variabilis forests of Korea compared with the default values given by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

  • Using alumina-glass infiltrated material which has been in the spotlight of biomaterials including dental material, appropriate composition of glass infiltrated material mainly depends on the thermal expansion coefficient. To obtain proper compositional glass of suitable thermal expansion coefficient effiiently. a Taguchi analysis was conducted. The influence of alkali oxide and alkali earths oxide, which affect mostly the thermal expansion coefficient of glass infiltrated material, was infiltrated material, the effect having influenced on the thermal expansion coefficient of glass was presented in this order (Na$_2$O≫K$_2$O ≫MgO≒CaO). The effect of Na$_2$O was about eight times as great as the effects of MgO, CaO and $K_2$O was about four times. Among the interaction affects of each variables the interaction affects of $K_2$O-CaO showed most significantly and thermal expansion property of specified composition was predicted by calculating contribution rate on each level of variables and interaction affects.

  • The present study composed a diesel-atkinson cycle of high expansion as a method of achieving high efficiency in diesel cycle engines. It also interpreted the cycle engine thermodynamically analysis to determine the possibility of the improvement of thermal efficiency and clarified the characteristics of several factors . According to the result of theoretical analysis, heat efficiency was highest when expansion-compression ratio Reど:1. In addition. diesel engines with high apparent compression ratio had higher expansion-compression ratio than otto engines and consequently their effect of high expansion was high. which in turn enhanced thermal efficiency. When the atkinson cycle was implemented in a real diesel engine by applying the miller cycle through the variation of the closing time of the intake valve, the effective compression ratio and the quantify of intake air decreased and as a result, the effect of high expansion was not observed. Accordingly. the atkinson cycle can be implemented when the quantity of intake air is compensated by supercharge and the effective compression ratio is maintained at its initial level through the reduction of the clearance volume. In this case. heat efficiency increased by $4.1\%$ at the same expansion-compression ratio when the apparent compression ratio was 20 and the fuel cut off ratio was 2. As explained above, when the atkinson cycle was used for diesel cycle. heat efficiency was improved. In order to realize high expansion through retarding the intake value closing time, the engine needs to be equipped with variable valve timing equipment, variable compression ratio equipment and supercharged Pressure equipment. Then a diesel-atkinson cycle engine is realized.

  • This study aims to observe the swelling representative rocks in Korea and to suggest improvements in the use of test methods and prior analysis in relation to the weathering of rocks. The swelling test and analysis were performed on the drilling cores obtained for the ground investigation at the domestic highway construction site. For the method of determining the absorption expansion index of rocks, the method proposed in "Standard Methods for Sample Collection and Specimen Preparation" of ISRM and Korean Rock Engineers Standard Rock Test Method was used. The specimen for the measurement of the expansion displacement was cylindrical with a height of 10 cm and a diameter of 5 cm. The existing swelling analysis method evaluates the sensitivity to weathering by using the maximum expansion displacement, but since the classification by bedrock grade is unclear, it is reasonable to use the rate of change of the expansion displacement according to the immersion time. It is necessary to conduct an experiment to distinguish between weathering and fault deterioration. In addition, long-term weathering prediction technology for each cancer type is needed through the expansion displacement analysis of the chemical weathering stage.

  • The shortage of parking lots in aged apartment complexes built from the 1980s to the mid 1990s is serious. When we look at the case of parking lot expansion in the aged apartment complexes, the method of extending the underground parking lot vertically occupies the majority. It is very important to secure the structural safety of the foundations when the existing buildings are enlarged. In the case of underground vertical work, the work space should be narrow, so that a method with excellent safety, environmental and construction properties should be applied. Urban construction is also required to use construction methods and equipment with low noise and vibration. This study analyzed the factors influencing the selection of the foundation reinforcement method for the expansion of the underground parking lot and Weights of influence factors were calculated. The purpose of this study was to analyze the applicability of the foundation reinforcement method. Factors influencing the applicability of the foundation reinforcement method were derived through expert interviews and The AHP technique was used to calculate the weight of the influencing factors. It was evaluated by experts on the applicability of the foundation reinforcement method. It conducted a case study on two types of underground parking lot expansion type and compared the applicability of the foundation reinforcement method.

  • To predict the ground subsidence caused by mines, various evaluation methods were applied to cases of ground subsidence in Korea, and the results were compared and analyzed. Continuous subsidence, which is relatively easily and accurately predicted, was excluded in this analysis. The stress arch - volumetric expansion method, limit equilibrium method, numerical analysis, probabilistic method, and evaluation method of the Korea Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation (KO MIR) were applied to 36 subsidence cases, including subsidence location, width, and depth, and goaf width, depth, and incline data. The stress arch - volumetric expansion method was the most accurate with an accuracy of ~92%. In the case of the KOMIR method, the regression model is 86.1% accurate, but somewhat lower in accuracy using a triangular pyramidal volume. The stress arch - volumetric expansion and KOMIR methods have the disadvantage of evaluating whether subsidence occurs or not. In the case of the numerical analysis, the accuracy is 72.3% when estimating the subsidence depth, but is slightly lower (55.8%) when estimating the subsidence width. The probabilistic and limit equilibrium methods have similar accuracies of 50.8~63.7%. Given it is possible to determine whether subsidence occurs, and the subsidence location, width, and depth with each method, it is recommended to apply various methods when evaluating sinkhole-type subsidence.

  • Multiscale structure has attracted significant interest due to its high stiffness/strength to weight ratios and multifunctional performance. However, most of the existing concurrent topology optimization works are carried out under deterministic load conditions. Hence, this paper proposes a robust concurrent topology optimization method based on the bidirectional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method for the design of structures composed of periodic microstructures subjected to uncertain dynamic loads. The robust objective function is defined as the weighted sum of the mean and standard deviation of the module of dynamic structural compliance with constraints are imposed to both macro- and microscale structure volume fractions. The polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) method is used to quantify and propagate load uncertainty to evaluate the objective function. The effective properties of microstructure is evaluated by the numerical homogenization method. To release the computation burden, the decoupled sensitivity analysis method is proposed for microscale design variables. The proposed method is a non-intrusive method, and it can be conveniently extended to many topology optimization problems with other distributions. Several numerical examples are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed robust concurrent topology optimization method.

  • When a lot of input data are not distributed uniformly n a chord-span direction or when the given shape is complicated, it is very difficult to obtain an inverse matrix which represents the smooth Bi-cubic B-spline surface of the initial shape. To overcome this problem, we suggest image Surface Expansion Method(ISE Method) which is suggested for vertex creation of B-spline curves and surfaces. Its basic concept, convergency and verification are shown. Also B-spline curves and Surfaces represented by ISE Method were compared with those represented by the existing method which is based on the inverse matrix method, the pseudoinverse matrix method and the chord length approximation method for vertex yielding. Ship Hull Forms which have Knuckle, Bulbous Bow, Transom and Stern frame were represented by the ISE Method.

  • A diffusion synthetic acceleration (DSA) technique for the SN transport equation discretized with the linear discontinuous expansion method with subcell balance (LDEM-SCB) on unstructured tetrahedral meshes is presented. The LDEM-SCB scheme solves the transport equation with the discrete ordinates method by using the subcell balances and linear discontinuous expansion of the flux. Discretized DSA equations are derived by consistently discretizing the continuous diffusion equation with the LDEM-SCB method, however, the discretized diffusion equations are not fully consistent with the discretized transport equations. In addition, a fine mesh rebalance (FMR) method is devised to accelerate the discretized diffusion equation coupled with the preconditioned conjugate gradient (CG) method. The DSA method is applied to various test problems to show its effectiveness in speeding up the iterative convergence of the transport equation. The results show that the DSA method gives small spectral radii for the tetrahedral meshes having various minimum aspect ratios even in highly scattering dominant mediums for the homogeneous test problems. The numerical tests for the homogeneous and heterogeneous problems show that DSA with FMR (with preconditioned CG) gives significantly higher speedups and robustness than the one with the Gauss-Seidel-like iteration.

  • The modal characteristics of the photonic crystal fibers are analyzed using the reliable and efficient plane wave expansion method. The mode profile, effective index and group velocity dispersion are obtained by solving Maxwell's vector wave equations without any approximation. The zero dispersion condition of a photonic crystal fiber is derived over a wide range of wavelengths. Higher-order modes are also easily found as a by-product of the plane wave expansion method. This method can be used to quickly and accurately design various optical properties of photonic crystal fibers.
