  • We present three nuclear/hydrogen-related R&D activities being performed at KAIST: air-ingressed LOCA analysis code development, gas turbine analysis tool development, and hydrogen-production system analysis model development. The ICE numerical technique widely used for the safety analysis of water-reactors is successfully implemented into GAMMA, with which we solve the basic equations for continuity, momentum conservation, energy conservation of the gas mixture, and mass conservation of 6 species (He, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and H2O). GAMMA has been extensively validated using data from 14 test facilities. We developed a tool to predict the characteristics of HTGR helium turbines based on the throughflow calculation with a Newton-Raphson method that overcomes the weakness of the conventional method based on the successive iteration scheme. It is found that the current method reaches stable and quick convergence even under the off-normal condition with the same degree of accuracy. The dynamic equations for the distillation column of HI process are described with 4 material components involved in the HI process: H2O, HI, I2, H2. For the HI process we improved the Neumann model based on the NRTL (Non-Random Two-Liquid) model. The improved Neumann model predicted a total pressure with 8.6% maximum relative deviation from the data and 2.5% mean relative deviation, and liquid-liquid-separation with 9.52% maximum relative deviation from the data.

  • Use of sheet metal structure is increased in various fields such as automobile, aerospace and communication equipment industry. When this structure is welded, welding distortion is generated due to the non-uniformity of temperature distribution. Recently welding distortion becomes a matter of great importance in the structure manufacture industry because it deteriorates the product's quality by bringing about shape error. Accordingly many studies for solving the problems by controlling the welding distortion are being performed. However, it is difficult to remove all kinds of distortion by welding process, though various kinds of methods for reducing distortion are applied to production. Consequently, straightening process is operated if the high precision quality is requested after welding. The local heating method induces compression plastic deformation by thermal expansion in the heating stage and then leaves constriction of length direction in the cooling stage. Accordingly, in the case of sheet metal structure, straightening effect is expected by heating for the part of distortion. This study includes numerical analysis of straightening effect by the local heating method in distortion comes from production of welded sheet metal structure. Particularly straightening effect followed by dimensions of heating area is analyzed according to the numerical analysis. The numerical analysis is performed by constructing 3-dimensional finite element model for 0.4mm stainless steel-sheet metal. Results of this study confirm that straightening effect changes as heating area increases and the optimum value of heating area that proves the maximum straightening effect exists.

  • Image coding based on mixed raster content model generates don't care regions (DCR) in foreground and background layers, and its overall coding performance is greatly affected by region filling methods for DCRs. Most conventional methods for DCR filling fail in utilizing the local signal properties in hole regions and thus the high frequency components in non-DCR regions are reflected into DCR after signal filling. In addition, further high frequency components are induced to the filled signal because of signal discontinuities in the boundary of DCR. To solve this problem, a new DCR filling algorithm using the priority-based adaptive region growing is proposed in this paper. The proposed method uses the watershed algorithm and the flooding priority of each pixel for region filling is determined from the degree of smoothness in the neighborhood area. By growing the filled region into DCR based on the computed priority, the expansion of high-textured area can be minimized which can improve the overall coding performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional algorithms.

  • The increase in demand for leisure time by the public and the vitalization of agricultural tourism resulting from the expansion of the five-day work week are expected to greatly contribute to the rural economy, but actual studies analyzing the ripple effect of the agricultural tourism industry are lacking. In order to analyze the economic ripple effect, tourism or agricultural tourism must become an independent sector in the inter-industry relations table's sector classification, but because it is not, the study uses a method of analysis which involves creating a satellite account. However, because agricultural tourism has a clear main agent in farms unlike general tourism which does not, there is one method in which provisions are made by farms or farm villages and another method in which outside products are used. The purpose of the present is to measure the economic ripple effect of agricultural tourism with a focus on 162 subclasses by applying positive data from the education sector input into agricultural tourism. Satellite accounts which considered intermediate input were created and applied to positive data, the analysis of which revealed agricultural tourism to account for 462 billion won, which is 0.01% of the total production amount of 3,503,480 billion won, while the production inducement coefficient was 3.2895 units when the final demand of agricultural tourism occurs. When the production inducement coefficient is at 3.2895 units, highest sector was agricultural tourism at 0.9968 units followed by restaurants and bars at 0.3325 units, roadt transportation services at 0.3183 units, lodging services at 0.1520 units, and petroleum products at 0.1290 units.

  • In analysis of underground structures, the effects of artificial boundary conditions are considered as one of the major reasons for differences from experimental results. These phenomena can be overcome by using the boundary elements which satisfy the multi-layered half space conditions. The fundamental solutions of multi-layered half-space for boundary element method is formulated satisfying the transmission and reflection of waves at each layer interface and radiation conditions at bottom layer. The governing equations can be obtained from the displacements at each layer which are expressed in terms of harmonic functions. All types of waves can be included using the complete response from semi-infinite integrals with respect to horizontal wavenumbers using expansion of Fourier series and Hankel transformation. Two dimensional Green's functions are derived from cylindrical Navier equations and potentials performing infinite integration in y-direction. In this case, it is effective to transform into two dimensional problem using semi-analytical integration and sinusoidal Bessel function. Some verifications are given to show the accuracy and efficiency of the developed method, and numerical examples to demonstrate the dynamic behavior of underground with various properties.

  • Fire incident in buildings is common, so the fire safety design of the framed structure is imperative, especially for the unprotected or partly protected bare steel frames. However, software for structural fire analysis is not widely available. As a result, the performance-based structural fire design is urged on the basis of using user-friendly and conventional nonlinear computer analysis programs so that engineers do not need to acquire new structural analysis software for structural fire analysis and design. The tool is desired to have the capacity of simulating the different fire scenarios and associated detrimental effects efficiently, which includes second-order P-D and P-d effects and material yielding. Also the nonlinear behaviour of large-scale structure becomes complicated when under fire, and thus its simulation relies on an efficient and effective numerical analysis to cope with intricate nonlinear effects due to fire. To this end, the present fire study utilizes a second-order elastic/plastic analysis software NIDA to predict structural behaviour of bare steel framed structures at elevated temperatures. This fire study considers thermal expansion and material degradation due to heating. Degradation of material strength with increasing temperature is included by a set of temperature-stress-strain curves according to BS5950 Part 8 mainly, which implicitly allows for creep deformation. This finite element stiffness formulation of beam-column elements is derived from the fifth-order PEP element which facilitates the computer modeling by one member per element. The Newton-Raphson method is used in the nonlinear solution procedure in order to trace the nonlinear equilibrium path at specified elevated temperatures. Several numerical and experimental verifications of framed structures are presented and compared against solutions in literature. The proposed method permits engineers to adopt the performance-based structural fire analysis and design using typical second-order nonlinear structural analysis software.

  • This paper improves the effects of clustered OFCDM scheme considering the frequency diversity effect over a frequency selective fading channel. In OFCDM with frequency domain spreading compared to OFDM, we can increase uncorrelated symbols by frequency allocation method of correspondent symbols over the same antenna and different antenna after spreading. The simulation results show that the performance of proposed system is improved by approximately 4 dB in ${\sigma}=0.02{\mu}sec$, the performance is improved by approximately 2.5dB in large delay spread in a 12-path Rayleigh fading channel with overall the root mean squared delay spread and the maximum Doppler frequency of 20 Hz. Also, the required average received Eb/No at the average BER of $10^{-3}$ by optimum method is improved by approximately 2.0 dB, compared to that of STA-OFCDM with frequency rearrange. The new method does not require any bandwidth expansion any feedback from the receiver to the transmitter and its computation complexity is similar to clustered OFCDM.

  • The supersonic flows around tandem cavities were investigated by two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulations using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation with the k- ω turbulence model. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves, and the acoustic effect transmitted from wake flow to upstream. The upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with van Leer's limiter was used as the numerical method. Numerical calculations were performed by the parallel processing with time discretizations carried out by the 4th-order Runge- Kutta method. The aspect ratios of cavities are 3 for the first cavity and 1 for the second cavity. The ratio of cavity interval to depth is 1. The ratio of cavity width to depth is 1 in the case of three dimensional flow. The Mach number and the Reynolds number were 1.5 and $4.5{\times}10^5$, respectively. The characteristics of the dominant frequency between two- dimensional and three-dimensional flows were compared, and the characteristics of the second cavity flow due to the first cavity flow was analyzed. Both two dimensional and three dimensional flow oscillations were in the 'shear layer mode', which is based on the feedback mechanism of Rossiter's formula. However, three dimensional flow was much less turbulent than two dimensional flow, depending on whether it could inflow and outflow laterally. The dominant frequencies of the two dimensional flow and three dimensional flows coincided with Rossiter's 2nd mode frequency. The another dominant frequency of the three dimensional flow corresponded to Rossiter's 1st mode frequency.

  • A cellular system with fixed relays is considered to be a technology that can support high data transmission service to wide areas. However, either inter-cell interference or inter-sector interference that can be produced by adding relays to the cellular system with fixed relays does not guarantee high link performance to deteriorate function, so that resource allocation for avoidance of interference is very much important. In the paper, the cellular system performance with repeater relay has been compared with the cellular system performance with relay, and cell coverage expansion at the use of relay repeater has been compared. To compare, this paper has suggested resource allocation method to avoid inter-cell interference and inter-sector interference at installation of fixed relay on the cellular system. The proposed method can allocate different frequency resources on adjacent base stations and relays to reduce interference and to expand high data transmission area, and all of frequency bands are used at each sector to elevate efficiency of the frequency when base stations and relays operate simultaneously.

  • Social interest in the seismic retrofit of the structure is growing massive earthquake that occurred recently. The brittle fracture of Non-seismically designed Columns lead to full collapse of the building. In the past, cross-sectional expansion method, a steel plate reinforcing method is applied mainly in recent years, fiber-reinforced method utilizing the advantages of the composite material are preferred. However, the reinforcement methods such as this, there is a drawback to induce physical damage to structures, and time consuming work space is large. IIn this study, FRP seismic reinforcement was developed using the Aluminum connector and the composite material (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer). Then, the optimum quantities of FRP seismic reinforcement was determined using a nonlinear finite element analysis program. Finally, the quantity decision process through the design and analysis of FRP reinforcement was suggested.
