To investigate the behavior of air-shaft and existing tunnel by excavating the small-diameter shaft into the existing tunnel, prototype air-shaft was constructed and analyzed in this study. Geotechnical characterization was conducted by boring and rock cores obtained were tested in the laboratory. Field monitoring including radial and tangential stresses and displacements was conducted with the 3-dimensional numerical analysis of prototype air-shaft. Results of field monitoring were compared with the numerical results. The results showed that maximum displacement of 2.11mm and maximum tangential stress of 54.0 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were obtained during shaft excavation near the right shoulder of the existing tunnel. The comparison of these field measurements with 3-dimensional numerical analysis showed that much more higher stress was measured during excavation compared to the numerical results even though the trends of stress and displacement were similar.

Traffic congestion in existing tunnels has increased due to increased traffic volume and enlarged vehicles. Enlarging existing tunnels has advantages over constructing new tunnels by reducing land purchasing costs as well as minimizing natural environment destruction. In fact, many overseas projects for enlarging existing tunnels have been reported. Thus, it appears that the demand on enlarging existing tunnels continues to rise in Korea in near future. Nonetheless, the studies related to the enlarged tunnels have been relatively rare since there have been few tunnel enlargement projects in Korea. In the present study, the tunnel behavior and the stability of rock pillar when enlarging existing parallel tunnels were investigated by performing FE analysis and using existing theory and empirical relationships. Four different enlarging cases, depending on the enlargement types and directions, were examined in the study. According to the results, for the tunnels with the same pillar width after enlarged, the uni-laterally enlarged tunnel indicated 5 to 20% higher crown settlement compared to the bi-laterally enlarged tunnel, and for the tunnel with the narrowest pillar, the highest shotcrete stress was observed. Also, the strength/stress ratio for rock pillar was more than 1.0 for all four enlargement cases, and the Matsuda's method was found to give higher strength/stress ratio by about 50% compared to the Peck's method.

So far, there has been no study of the concrete to strengthen in the lining of the tunnels, except for the study of the stability of subgrade and the tunnel construction technologies. In the existing concrete work for tunnel lining, lots of problems happen due to the partial compaction and the material segregation after casting concrete. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to improve economic efficiency and secure durability through the improvement of the construction performance and quality of the concrete for the tunnel lining among the civil structures. Therefore, the compactability and strength properties of the High Flowing Self-Compacting Lining Concrete (HSLC) are evaluated to develop the mixing proportion for design construction technology of HSLC that can overcome the inner cavity due to the reduced flowability and unfilled packing, which has been reported as the problem in the existing lining concrete. The result of the evaluation shows that the ternary mix meets the regulations better than the binary mix. Consequently, it has been judged applicable to the cement for tunnel lining.
In the new Seoul-Busan high speed railroad construction specially city center passage roadbed establishment is recommended the staibility for the existing subway tunnel segments of Busan subway line No. 1 and No.2. regarding the appearance condition, a quality condition and the durability of the objective facility site exact inspection, and it evaluates the numerical analysis which uses MIDAS GTS it leads and there is the objective of the place where the stability of the objective facility and this tunnel it investigates. To immediacy of the on-the-spot inspection result whole facility it is a condition where the reinforcement which is simple not to be hindrance is necessary, 2nd Line case it is a condition which transfer is good but the general defect and the damage which occur from the tunnel of NATM type were confirmed part. While roadbed establishment constructing that the continuous maintenance is necessary, it is judged. The result of 1st, 2nd Line maximum sinkage, unequal sinkage and the lining stress of numerical analysis are within permission and the damage degree is appearing with the fact that the degree it will can disregard it is slight. But it enforces necessary Pre-grouting in order to minimize an actual tunnel face conduct and when the tunnel is excavated it is judged with the fact that necessary to minimize the outflow possibility.

A method of tunnel analysis for a new type of tunnel construction method (ACLCM, Automatic Concrete Lining Construction Method) is presented here. ACLCM is an unique tunnel construction method which provides concrete lining at the end of shield machine by extruding concrete into the space between the excavated ground surface and the inner form (Automatic Concrete Lining Machine). Since behaviors of tunnel and the surrounding soils are greatly influenced by the construction method, existing tunnel design methods may not be applicable to the design of ACLCM tunnel. In this study, a method of ACLCM tunnel analysis is suggested to provide the prediction of behavior of ACLCM tunnel and surrounding soils as well as to check up the safety during the construction and after the completion of ACLCM tunnel

Since the 30-year-old facility is expected to surge from 10.5% to 23.9% in 10 years, the new evaluation system is needed to establish efficient maintenance system for securing the safety and extending the life span of existing facilities. In this study, Delphi and AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) was conducted to provide a systematic new evaluation system for the NATM tunnel, which is the most frequently constructed structure of the existing tunnel. Since the existing assessment systems are limited in scope of evlauatuon criteria, the survey was conducted in conjunction with closed questionnaires on existing items and open questionnaires for eliciting new items. In results, suitable evaluation factors were derived for the NATM tunnel through the validation of the survey results. Also after calculating weighted value of the derived assessment item using AHP technique, a new evaluation system is proposed to meet the characteristics of the NATM tunnel, so that they can be used as reference materials for revising and supplementing detatiled guidelines in the future.
Generally, when constructing a tunnel close to existing structures, the tunnel must be built at a constant distance from the structures that is more than width of tunnel to minimize the impact of interference between an existing structures and new tunnel. Spacing of these closed tunnels should be designed considering soil state, size of tunnel and reinforcement method. Particularly when the ground is soft, a care should be taken with the tunnel plans because the closer the tunnel is to the existing structures, the greater the deformation becomes. As methods of reviewing the effect of cavities on the stability of a tunnel, field measurement, numerical analysis and scaled model test can be considered. In the methods, the scaled model test can reproduce the engineering characteristics of a rock in a field condition and the shape of structures using the scale factor even not all conditions cannot be considered. In this study, when construction of a tunnel close to existing structures, the method and considering factors of the scaled model test were studied to predict the actual tunnel behavior in planning stage. Furthermore, model test results were compared with the numerical analysis results for verifying the proposed model test procedure. Also, practical results were derived to verify the stability of a tunnel vis-a-vis cavities through the scaled model test, which assumed spacing distances of 0.25 D, 0.50 D, and 1.00 D between the cavities and tunnel as well as the network state distribution. The spacing distances of 1.0 D is evaluated as the critical distance by the results of model test and numerical analysis.

If the ground is excavated in a depth which is deeper than the adjacent existing tunnel, the behavior of the braced wall is known to be greatly affected by the presence of the tunnel. By the way it is expected to be also affected by the structure on the ground surface, There are not many examples of studies which are conducted on this subject. As a result, largel scale model tests and analysis were conducted, to measure the behavior of the tunnel under the building whose location on the ground surface was varied during the adjacent ground excavation. For this purpose, the location of a building load was varied in 0 m, 1D, 2D on ground surface. In this paper, the behaviors of braced wall and adjacent tunnel was studied. Model tests in 1 : 10 scale were performed in real construction sequences. The size of test pit was $2.0m(width){\times}6.0m(height){\times}4.0m(length)$ in dimension. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing tunnel under the influence of the building load on the ground surface adjacent to the braced wall.

Prediction of lining loads due to tunnelling is one of the major issues to be addressed in the design of a tunnel. The objective of this study is to investigate rational and realistic design loads on tunnel linings. factors influencing the lining load are summarized and discussed. The instruments for measuring the lining loads are reviewed and discussed because field measurements are often necessary to verify the design methods. Tunnel construction in the City of Edmonton has been very active for storm and sanitary purposes. Since the early 1970's, the city has also been developing an underground Light Rail Transit system. The load measurements obtained from these tunnels are compared with the results from the existing design methods. However, none of the existing methods are totally satisfactory, Therefore, there is some room for improvement in the prediction of lining loads. The convergence-confinement method is reviewed and applied to a case history of a tunnel in Edmonton. The convergence curves are obtained from 2-D finite element analyses using three different material models and theoretical equations. The limitation of the convergence-confinement method is discussed by comparing these curves with the field measurements. Three-dimensional finite element analyses are performed to gain a better understanding of stress and displacement behaviour near the tunnel face. An improved design method is proposed based on the review of existing design methods and the performance of numerical analyses. A specific method or combination of two different methods is suggested for the estimation of lining loads for different conditions of tunnelling. A method to determine the stress reduction factor is described. Typical values of dimensionless load factors nD/H for tunnels in Edmonton are obtained from parametric analyses. Finally, the loads calculated using the proposed method are compared with field measurements collected from various tunnels in terms of soil types and construction methods to verify the method. The proposed method gives a reasonable approximation of the lining loads. The proposed method is recommended as an approximate guideline for the design of tunnels, but the results should be confirmed by field measurements due to the uncertainties of the ground and lining properties and the construction procedures, This is the reason that in-situ monitoring should be an integral part of the design procedure.
PURPOSES : This study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of safety with the standard for threshold zone luminance as specified in the Recommendation for Lighting of Traffic Tunnel, which has been widely adopted worldwide. METHODS : A driving test of the subject in a full-scale road tunnel was conducted. The adaptation luminance and threshold zone luminance, which should be known for the driver to perceive an object within stopping sight distance, were obtained. These values were compared with the adaptation luminance and threshold zone luminance obtained by the existing reduced model test and tunnel lighting standard that has served as a guideline for the current threshold zone luminance standard. RESULTS : According to this study, threshold zone luminance should be increased to at least 1.8 times the value proposed in the existing studies and to twice the domestic tunnel lighting standard (KS C 3703: 2014). CONCLUSIONS : The threshold zone luminance proposed in this study differs largely from that obtained from indoor tests and from the current tunnel lighting standard used worldwide; this difference may be attributed to the fact that the indoor tests did not incorporate driving workload, non-uniformity of luminance distribution in terms of sight, and factors that reduce the visibility of the driver, such as the light reflected into the driver's eyes. Hence, it is necessary to further review the factors that reduce the visibility of drivers approaching tunnels in order to determine the rational tunnel threshold zone luminance.
