This paper describes a theoretical analysis and experimental verification on the performances of a vacuum-compatible air bearing, which is designed with a cascaded exhaust scheme to minimize the air leakage in a vacuum environment. The design of the vacuum-compatible air bearing equipped with the differential exhaust system requires great care because several design parameters, such as the number of exhaust stages, diameter of exhaust tube, pumping speed of a vacuum pump, and bearing clearance greatly influence the air leakage and thus degree of vacuum. In this study, a performance analysis method was proposed to estimate the performances of the air bearing, such as load capacity, stiffness, and air leakage. Results indicate that the load capacity and stiffness of the air bearing was improved as its boundary pressure, which was determined by the $1^{st}$ exhaust method, was lowered, and the dominant factors on the chamber's degree of vacuum were the number of exhaust stages, exhaust tube diameter and bearing clearance. A vacuum chamber and air bearing stage using porous pad were fabricated to verify the theoretical analysis. The results demonstrate that chamber pressure up to an order of $10^{-3}$ Pa was achieved with the air bearing stage operating inside the chamber, and this analysis method was valid by comparing predicted values with experimental data, for the mass flow rates from the porous pad, and pressures at each exhaust port and chamber, respectively.
Bulk trailers, used for the transportation of powdered materials, such as cement and fly ash, are crucial in the construction industry. The speedy exhaustion of powdered materials stored in the tank of bulk trailers is relevant to improving transportation efficiency and reducing transportation costs. The exhaust time can be reduced by developing an automatic control system to replace the manual exhaust operation. The instantaneous or accumulated exhausts of powdered materials must be measured for automatic control of the bulk trailer exhaust system. Accordingly, we previously proposed a recurrent neural network (RNN) model that estimated the instantaneous exhaust based on low-cost pressure sensor signals without an expensive flowmeter for powders. Although our previous study utilized only an RNN model, models such as multilayer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN) are also widely utilized for time-series estimation. This study compares the performance of three neural network models (MLP, CNN, and RNN) in estimating instantaneous and accumulated exhausts. In terms of the instantaneous exhaust estimation, the difference in the performance of neural network models was insignificant (that is, 8.64, 8.62, and 8.56% for the MLP, CNN, and RNN, respectively, in terms of the normalized root mean squared error). However, in the case of the accumulated exhaust, the performance was excellent in the order of CNN (1.67%), MLP (2.03%), and RNN (2.20%).

In order to design a diesel engine system and predict its performance, it is necessary to analyze the gas flow of the intake and exhaust system. A gas flow analysis in three-dimensional (3D) format needs a high-resolution workstation and enormous time for analysis. Therefore, the method of characteristics (MOC) was used for a gas flow analysis with a fast calculation time and a low-resolution workstation. An experiment was conducted on a single cylinder diesel engine to measure pressure in cylinder, intake pipe and exhaust pipe. The one-dimensional (1D) gas flow was analyzed under the same conditions as the experiment. The engine speed, valve timing and compression ratio were the same conditions and the intake pressure was inputted as the experimental results. Bent pipe such as an exhaust port that cannot be realized in 1D was omitted. As results of validation, the cylinder pressure showed accuracy, but the exhaust pipe pressure exhibited inaccuracy. This is considered as an error caused by the failure to implement a bent pipe such as an exhaust port. When analyzed in 3D, calculation time required 61 hours more based on a model of this study. In the future, we intend to implement a bent pipe that cannot be realized in 1D using 3D and prepare a method to supplement reliability by using 1D-3D coupling.

A hydrogen fueled 2 stroke free-piston engine with reverse uni-flow scavenging have a advantageous structure for the backfire occurrence, but it can reduce thermal efficiency by the circuit-flow to go through a exhaust-port. In this research, varied boost pressure, SVOT and exhaust pressure are used in a 2stroke free-piston engine with hydrogen fueled for studying the possibility of increasing thermal efficiency of free-piston hydrogen engine. As a result, to increase thermal efficiency of free-piston are suitable to supply the mixture after port closed the exhaust rater than to use the scanvenging. And it was increased by the exhaust pressure, to achieve it must be used the lean-mixture at SVOT aBDC $34^{\circ}$.

A Coolant core for Range Extender engine has been developed using CFD technique. Coolant by-pass has been added to the improved model to reduce temperature near and between exhaust valve. Due to the increased coolant flow-rate both around the second cylinder block and between exhaust valves, improved model shows no significant stagnant flow compared with base model. Finally, the improved model shows improved heat transfer coefficients near exhaust valves, and 5% reduced pressure-drop through the coolant core. Reduced pressure-drop may increase the fuel efficiency by reducing the load of a coolant pump.
A fast response NO analyzer was applied to investigate the relation between cycle-by-cycle NO emissions and combustion chamber pressure. NO emissions were sampled at an isolated exhaust manifold of 4-stroke spark ignition engine to avoid the interference of exhaust gas from other cylinders. The linear correlation analysis was performed with collected data of NO emissions and combustion chamber pressure with respect to the various air-fuel mixture ratios and engine loads. The sampled data sets were obtained during 200 cycles at each operating condition. The results showed that there was a typical pattern in NO emissions from an exhaust port through a cycle. It was possible to set a block of crank angle in which the linear correlation coefficient between NO emissions and combustion chamber pressure was high. As the engine load increased, NO emissions were more dependent on combustion chamber pressure after TDC. It was also analyzed that the correlation between two parameters with respect to air-fuel mixture ratio tended to increase as mixture went leaner. Furthermore, this correlation coefficient for the mixture near the lean limit seemed to be kept high even though combustion was unstable.

Supercharging system was adopted to investigate the influence of boost pressure on operating range and exhaust emissions by using a supercharger at low temperature diesel combustion (LTC) condition in a 5-cylinder 2.7 L direct injection diesel engine. The experimental parameters such as injection quantity, injection timing, injection pressure and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate were varied to find maximum operating range in LTC condition. As a result of adopting increased boost pressure in LTC, wider operating range was achieved compared with naturally aspirated condition due to increased mixing intensity. Increased boost pressure resulted in lower hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions due to increased swirl rate and mixing intensity, which induced complete combustion. Moreover, increased boost pressure in LTC resulted in much lower soot emissions compared with high speed direct injection (HSDI) condition.

Intake air conditions, such as air temperature, pressure, and humidity, are very important parameters that influence engine performance including combustion and emissions characteristics. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of intake air temperature on combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics in a single cylinder diesel engine. In this experiment, an air cooler and a heater were installed on the intake air line and a gas flow controller was installed to maintain the flow rate. It was found that intake air temperature induced the evaporation characteristics of the fuel, and it affects the maximum in-cylinder pressure, IMEP(indicated mean effective pressure), and fuel consumption. As the temperature of intake air decreases, the fuel evaporation characteristics deteriorate even as the fuel temperature has reached the auto-ignition temperature, so that ignition delay is prolonged and the maximum pressure of cylinder is also reduced. Based on the increase in intake air temperature, nitrogen oxides(NOx) increased. In addition, the carbon monoxide(CO) and unburned hydrocarbons(UHC) increased due to incomplete fuel combustion at low intake air temperatures.

For the sea-level performance test of rocket motor designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, ejectors with no induced secondary flow are generally used, which serves dual purposes of evacuating the test cell and performing as a supersonic exhaust diffuser (SED). The main concern of this research is to simulate starting transients in order to visualize evolution of internal shock structures in SED with different initial cell (vacuum chamber) pressures. RANS code with low Reynolds $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed for these computations. Numerical results were compared with the pressure measurements previously performed [Proceedings of 2004 Annual Conference, KIMST], and showed good agreements with pressure-time history of measured data. In the case of low vacuum chamber pressure, abrupt impingement of the under-expanded supersonic jet from the nozzle onto the diffuser wall was observed, whereas initial impingement point was located downstream and moved slowly upstream in the case of non-vacuum chamber pressure. In spite of initially dissimilar evolution of shock structures, iso-mach contour revealed that the steady shock structures had little difference except the location of flow separation and normal shock.
It is the objective of the present study to conduct correlation analysis for deriving control parameters in vertical shafts using the results obtain by the design of experiments in the preceding research. The control parameters are categorized into objective parameters, derived parameters, condition parameters, operation parameters, and sensing parameters. The maximum pressure in the shaft should be sufficiently small in order to maintain exhaust hood performance. The pressure variations between floors should also be minimized in order to maintain uniform exhaust performance between floors and to save energy for excessive pressure drop in the shaft. The standard deviation based on -4Pa is proposed as an objective parameter to control pressure in shafts. The correlation equation has been obtained between the standard deviation and the sensing parameters of outdoor temperature and the pressure at the top of the shaft.
