Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 12 weeks of circuit training on inflammatory markers, blood lipids, and body composition of obese middle-aged women. Methods : Twenty-four obese women were randomly divided into three groups (circuit exercise training, CT; aerobic exercise training, AT; resistance exercise training, RT). All the subjects participated in the exercise program for 60 minutes, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. Results : Significant differences found in the participants pre-and post exercise training C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, and adiponectin levels. The CT participants experience an expected increase in their adiponectin levels. Significantly improved blood TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, and TG levels were found after 12 weeks of exercise. The AT and CT groups showed greater improvements in their HDL-C, LDL-C, and TG levels than the RT group. Significant differences were found in the participants pre-and post-exercise training body weight, body fat percentage, and body mass index (BMI). Conclusion : The CT participants body fat percentages decreased more than the RT group's percentages. In conclusion, obese women who completed 12 weeks of circuit exercise training (aerobics + resistance exercise) had significant improvements in their inflammatory markers, blood lipids, and body fat percentage.
Purpose: This paper presents the development process and the final contents of the sellf- management education program integrated with exercise training (Healthy Aging Happy Aging, HAHA program) for community residing older adults with chronic diseases. Methods: The program evaluation methodology was applied which is an interactive program development process based on needs assessment, formative evaluation, process evaluation and outcome evaluation. The program was developed and revised while the program was implementing to 22 hypertension (HT) and 32 diabetic (DM) participants. Results: The final program has two sub-programs for HT and DM participants utilizing self-efficacy resources. They share four common components; 1) health screening of exercise risks, 2) weekly 1-hour group self-management education classes, 3) biweekly 1-hour group exercise training and 4) a mid-term individual counseling. Both sub-programs were 12-weeks long but have different education and exercise contents. Participants-rated mean satisfaction scores were 3.47/4 and 3.61/4 for HT and DM program respectively. Attendance rate were 83.1% ~ 92.3% for the classes. Conclusion: The HAHA program developed by multidisciplinary team which reflected participants needs was accepted well by participants evidenced by high attendance rate and perceived satisfaction level.
Purpose: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effects of an exercise program on activities of daily living (ADL), balance and cognition in elderly individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Methods: Thirty-two patients with mild to moderate cognitive impairment were assigned to one of two groups: an exercise group (n=16) and a control group (n=16). The exercise group carried on regular exercise for 60 minutes a day, 4-5 times per week for 8 weeks. The exercise group participated in an exercise program (treadmill training and physical training). ADL, balance and cognitive function were evaluated before and at the end of the program using the Korean modified Bathel Index (K-MBI), the Functional independence measure (FIM), the Berg balance scale (BBS), the Balance performance monitor (BPM), and the Mini mental state examination (MMSE) in both groups. Results: There were significant exercise-induced improvements in ADL and Balance from pre to post tests; but not in MMSE. Conclusion: Exercise programs can improve ADL and balance in elderly with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
Physical activity could be considered one of the factors that affect the immune system status and function. To find the relation between exercise and cytokines, we examined the possible effects of an 8-week endurance training program on the serum levels of cytokines, including tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$) and interferon-gamma (IFN-${\gamma}$) in sedentary men. A total of 30 healthy young male volunteers were randomly divided into an endurance training group and a control group. The training group followed a specific exercise protocol (running on a treadmill for 15~30 min at 50~70% maximal heart rate) for 8 weeks and the control group did not participate in any exercise program. Venous blood samples were collected from both the groups 24 h before and 24 h and 48 h after the exercise. Repeated ANOVA was used for statistical purposes. The serum levels of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IFN-${\gamma}$ were determined by ELISA. Significant (p<0.05) and non-significant (p>0.05) decreases were observed in the serum levels of IFN-${\gamma}$ and TNF-${\alpha}$, respectively, after the 8-week endurance training program. Our findings indicated that an 8-week endurance exercise may affect the serum levels of some inflammatory cytokines, suggesting the beneficial role of this training protocol in elderly population and people with certain conditions (inflammation of the vertebrae or other inflammatory diseases).
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rope skipping and band exercise on GH, IGF-1 and metabolic syndrome risk factors in female obese middle school students. Twenty female obese middle school students(%BF > 30%) were randomly assigned to a exercise group(EX, n=10) or control group(CON, n=10). The exercise group has performed rope skipping and band exercise for 12 weeks, 3time per week. Exercise intensity was increased gradually, from 40% to 70% of Heart Rate Reserve(HRR) and Rating of Perceived Exertion(RPE) 11-15. GH, IGF-1 and metabolic syndrome rist factors were GH, IGF-1 and metabolic syndrome risk factors were measured pre- and post-exercise program including rope skipping and band exercise. Levels of GH and IGF-1 were significantly increased (p<.01 and p<0.001, respectively) in exercise group after 12 weeks of exercise training. WC and TG were significantly decreased(p<.01) in exercise group after 12 weeks of training. HDL-C was significantly increased(p<.05) in exercise group after 12 weeks of training. In conclusion, rope skipping and band exercise were effective exercise program in improving GH, IGF-1 and metabolic syndrome risk factors in female obese middle school students.
Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effects of a Halliwick rotation program on improving balance. Methods: Nine healthy females were randomly assigned to a Halliwick rotation program training as an aquatic group (n=9, age=$22.5{\pm}1.3$ years) or to a control group. The aquatic group trained using a Halliwick rotation program (3 times/week, 30 min/day) for 6 weeks. Balance was measured according to stance position: Hard Plate Open Eyes (HOE), Hard Plate Close Eyes (HCE), Soft Plate Open Eyes (SOE) and Soft Plate Close Eyes (SCE). This was done before the training and 3 and 6 weeks after the training. The data were analyzed with the SPSS Win 12.0 program using repeated measure ANOVA. Results: There were significant training-induced differences in SOE and POE (p<0.05), and in SCE and PCE (p<0.05) by Toe pad. There were significant training-induced differences in SOE and POE (p<0.05) by Heel pad after the aquatic rotation exercise program. Conclusion: The Halliwick rotation program can improve balance.
Background: The purpose of this study was to verify the most effective spinal stabilization exercise program by comparing the activities of muscles contributing to spinal stabilization during 2 types of exercises using 3-D NEWTON and a Gym-ball. Exercise 1 was performed 3-D NEWTON spinal stabilization training during 4 weeks (n=8). Exercise 2 was performed special training program that use a Gym-ball during 4 weeks (n=8). Results: The group of 3-D NEWTON applying lumbar stabilization kinetic program was increased 18.8s after training. Conclusions: It was revealed the statically significant difference between 3-D NEWTON and Gym-ball lumbar stabilization exercise groups. Therefore it has been turned out that 3-D NEWTON and Gym-ball lumbar stabilization exercise has an effect on the abdominis and trunk muscle strengthening and balance.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of core muscle training on balance ability. Forty subjects in their 20s participated in a 6 week core muscle training program. Balance ability before and after the intervention were assessed and analyzed using the Romberg test, which was conducted on the floor, pedalo, and balancefit. The differences between the measurement methods of balance ability using varied platforms was also compared and analyzed. After the 6-week core exercise training program, the training group represented statistically significant increases in all 3 methods for static balance ability. In the control group, all 3 methods represented no statistically significant increases. Upon comparing the different methods of the Romberg test, there were no notable differences between conducting the test on varying platforms for both groups. This study suggests that the core muscle exercise training program increased the balance ability.
Background: Back pain is associated with a high risk of recurrence. Various physical therapy techniques for back pain have been studied, including reprogramming the central nervous system by integrating sensation and motion with sensory exercise training.
