  • This paper presents an augmented reality (AR) based rehabilitation exercise system to enhance the motor function of the hands for the paretic/hemi-paretic patient. The existing rehabilitation systems rely on mechanical apparatus for palsy rehabilitation, but we aim to use the rehabilitation system at home with easy configuration and minimized equipment by the computer vision based approach. The proposed method evaluates the interaction status of the fingertip action by using the position and the contact of the fingertip markers. We obtain the 2D positions of the fingertip markers from a single camera, and then transform the 3D positions from the calibrated camera space by using an ARToolKit marker. We adopt simple geometric calculation by the conversion of the 2D interest points into the 3D interaction points for the simple interactive task in AR environment. Some experimental results show that the proposed method is practical and simply applicable to the applications with personal AR interaction.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate how to design effective virtual reality-based training (i.e., virtual training) in maritime safety and to present methods for enhancing interface fidelity by employing immersive interaction and 3D user interface (UI) design. Background: Emerging virtual reality technologies and hardware enable to provide immersive experiences to individuals. There is also a theory that the improvement of fidelity can improve the training efficiency. Such a sense of immersion can be utilized as an element for realizing effective training in the virtual space. Method: As an immersive interaction, we implemented gesture-based interaction using leap motion and Myo armband type sensors. Hand gestures captured from both sensors are used to interact with the virtual appliance in the scenario. The proposed 3D UI design is employed to visualize appropriate information for tasks in training. Results: A usability study to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method has been carried out. As a result, the usability test of satisfaction, intuitiveness of UI, ease of procedure learning, and equipment understanding showed that virtual training-based exercise was superior to existing training. These improvements were also independent of the type of input devices for virtual training. Conclusion: We have shown through experiments that the proposed interaction design results are more efficient interactions than the existing training method. The improvement of interface fidelity through intuitive and immediate feedback on the input device and the training information improve user satisfaction with the system, as well as training efficiency. Application: Design methods for an effective virtual training system can be applied to other areas by which trainees are required to do sophisticated job with their hands.

  • Since 2008, it has been stipulated to conduct programming education for grade 5 and 6 elementary school student. However, it is the reality that the plans and studies for this are seriously lacking until now. The objective of this study is to propose a programming education utilizing robots as a plan to overcome limitations of existing programming education, find the problems through developing and applying education program for general elementary school students. As a result of experimental application of the developed program, since the gap of academic accomplishment for the robot programming is large for each student, it is necessary to develop education program to enable individual studies of each level and operate program with the focus on programming education rather than the robot. Moreover, it is pointed that the difficult and unnecessary elements in the robot programming course must be improved or reduced, it is better to exercise it on the grade 6 program for concentration on the programming education, and there should be improvement on equipment, environment for robot programming.

The period of the research was 9 days and N-K table was used as equipment to measure position sense of knee joint. Heart rate monitor was also used to measure heart beat during both when in comfortable state and in exercises. For the method of this study, error in position sense of knee joint was measured right before fatigue occurs. Then volunteers were to be exercised for 10 minutes in treadmill aiming to raise the heart beat to 90%. If muscle fatigue occurs after the exercise, let the comparative group rest for 20 minutes while applying taping for group 1 and icing for group 2. For the icing, it was applied for 3 minutes followed by 1 minute rest. 5 sets of icing were applied on thighs and calf each, Then error of position sense of knee joint was measured same way it was done before muscle fatigue. As the result, there were similar differences among comparative group(p<.05), group 1 and group 2 before the muscle fatigue and after the muscle fatigue. There were similar differences in comparative group with muscle fatigue, group 1 and group 2 as the result of one-way ANOVA and with further examination, similar differences were only found in between comparative group and group 2(p<.05). With the result, we can see there wasn't clear effect of rest, icing or taping, however, group 2 with icing showed better condition compared to comparative group who have rested without any application.
