Vibration Analysis of a Water Tank Structures (접수탱크구조의 진동해석)

  • A liquid storage rectangular tank structures are used in many fields of civil, mechanical and marine engineering. Especially, Ship structures have many tanks in contact with inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and cargo tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tank structures. Many authors have studied vibration of cylindrical and rectangular tanks structures containing fluid. Few research on dynamic interaction among tank walls through fluid are reported in the vibration of rectangular tanks recently. In case of rectangular tanks, structural coupling between adjacent panels and effect of vibration modes of multiple panels on added mass have to be considered. In the present paper, coupling effect between panels of tank structure on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region have investigated numerically and experimentally.

  • A 7K60MC-S low speed diesel engine in a power plant has frequently experienced high vibration since the unit completed construction works. Up to date, no fundamental vibration solutions were reached. Hence, several vibration tests and analyses were conducted to identify the root cause of this high vibration and to suggest the optimal countermeasures for diesel engine. The 9.25 Hz and 25.4 Hz vibrations have been observed on main body during operation. The magnitude of engine upper structural vibration is generally similar in horizontal transverse direction. However, differences in the 'Fore' and 'After' vibration magnitude with the same vibration phase angle at 9.25 Hz occur due to the explosion pulsations of 7 cylinders and the Inertia momentum added by the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) duct system. It was analyzed that the excess structural vibration occurred when the natural frequency of engine body is affected by the exciting sources due to the explosion pressure and the discharge pulsation of the seven cylinders in resonance range.

Effects of Flange Joint on the Dynamic Characteristics of the External Cylindrical Grinding Wheel Spindle (외경연삭 휠 주축의 진동특성에 미치는 플랜지 결합부의 영향)

  • In the grinding process, generally, the exciting forces with high frequency can be generated due to the wheel wear and the grinding process. As the grinding speed increases, the precise investigation about the wheel dynamic characteristics is required. Conventionally the wheel-spindle has been considered with lumped model in dynamic modeling. With this lumped model, the significant mode resulted from the shell mode of wheel can be readily ignored. This paper suggests the new analysis model which includes the shell mode of wheel in modeling the wheel-spindle assembly. Furthermore, based on the suggested model, the effects of the bolt tightening force and the taper tightening force on the dynamic properties are investigated by the finite element modal analysis and the experimental method. As a result of investigation, the shell mode vibration of wheel affects the dynamic characteristics of the spindle assembly. Also, the vibration modes of the spindle assembly are significantly affected by the joint tightening forces.

In the previous report, A numerical tool of vibration analysis of a 3-dimensional tank is developed by using finite element method for plates and boundary element method for fluid region. In this paper, the coupling effect between panels of a tank on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region and mode characteristics in accordance with changing breadth of the plates are investigated numerically and discussed.

Non-destructive evaluation of concrete quality using PZT transducers

  • This paper presents a new concept of using PZT (lead zircornate titanate) transducers as a non-destructive testing (NDT) tool for evaluating quality of concrete. Detection of defects in concrete is very important in order to check the integrity of concrete structures. The electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) response of PZT transducers bonded onto a concrete specimen can be used for evaluating local condition of the specimen. Measurements are carried out by electrically exciting the bonded PZT transducers at high frequency range and taking response measurements of the transducers. In this study, the compression test results showed that concrete specimens without sufficient compaction are likely to fall below the desired strength. In addition, the strength of concrete was greatly reduced as the voids in concrete were increased. It was found that the root mean square deviation (RMSD) values yielded between the EMI signatures for concrete specimens in dry and saturated states showed good agreement with the specimens' compressive strength and permeable voids. A quality metric was introduced for predicting the quality of concrete based on the dry-saturated state of concrete specimens. The simplicity of the method and the current development towards low cost and portable impedance measuring system, offer an advantage over other NDE methods for evaluating concrete quality.

Modal-based model reduction and vibration control for uncertain piezoelectric flexible structures

  • In piezoelectric flexible structures, the contribution of vibration modes to the dynamic response of system may change with the location of piezoelectric actuator patches, which means that the ability of actuators to control vibration modes should be taken into account in the development of modal reduction model. The spatial $H_2$ norm of modes, which serves as a measure of the intensity of modes to system dynamical response, is used to pick up the modes included in the reduction model. Based on the reduction model, the paper develops the state-space representation for uncertain flexible tructures with piezoelectric material as non-collocated actuators/sensors in the modal space, taking into account uncertainties due to modal parameters variation and unmodeled residual modes. In order to suppress the vibration of the structure, a dynamic output feedback control law is designed by imultaneously considering the conflicting performance specifications, such as robust stability, transient response requirement, disturbance rejection, actuator saturation constraints. Based on linear matrix inequality, the vibration control design is converted into a linear convex optimization problem. The simulation results show how the influence of vibration modes on the dynamical response of structure varies with the location of piezoelectric actuators, why the uncertainties should be considered in the reductiom model to avoid exciting high-frequency modes in the non-collcated vibration control, and the possiblity that the conflicting performance specifications are dealt with simultaneously.

  • With optimal inductors shunted at the ends of the waveguide of RF exciting laser, the voltage variation can be reduced dramatically. If multiple inductores are shunted at the appropriate positions, almost the perfect RF uniformity is possible. All the optimum inductances are derived from the unique method of transmission line theory, which illustrates visually the whole variation of standing wave pattern along the hollow waveguide.

  • The sloshing phenomena in a two-dimensional rectangular tank are investigated using a level set method based on finite volume method. The code validations are performed by comparing between the present results and previous numerical results, which gives a good agreement. We present the streamlines pattern, free surface shape, maximum free surface elevation and pressure fluctuation patterns in the tank under the pitch and surge motions with various frequencies. These two different motions cause the different flow structures in the tank. The time variations of surface elevation and pressure at the different locations in the tank strongly depend on the exciting frequency of tank moving.

Characteristics of Heaving Motion of Hollow Circular Cylinder (내부가 빈 원기둥의 수직운동 특성)

  • In the present investigation, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a vertically floating hollow cylinder in regular waves have been studied. The potential theory for solving the diffraction and radiation problem was employed by assuming that the heave response motion was linear. By using the matched eigenfunction expansion method, the characteristics of the exciting forces, hydrodynamic coefficients, and heave motion responses were investigated with various system parameters such as the radius and draft of a hollow cylinder. In the present analytical model, two resonances are identified: the system resonance of a hollow cylinder and the piston-mode resonance in the confined inner fluid region. The piston resonance mode is especially important in the motion response of a hollow circular cylinder. In many cases, the heave response at the piston resonance mode is large, and its resonant frequency can be predicted using the empirical formula of Fukuda (1977). The present design tool can be applied to analyze the motion response of a spar offshore structure with a moon pool.

Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these tanks in contact with fluid are significantly affected by fluid coupling effect. Therefore it is important to exactly predict vibration characteristics of tank structure. In order to estimate the vibration characteristics, the fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem should be solved precisely. But it is difficult to estimate exactly the magnitude of the fluid coupling effect because it has some problems such as a fluid-structure interaction, influence by the free surface, vibration modes of structural panels and depth of water. In this paper, with fluid coupling effect, the effect of structural constraint between panels on the vibration characteristics are investigated numerically and discussed.
