This research presented a frequency analysis method to analyze NRRO in a computer hard disk drive. RRO was proved to be the harmonics of rotational frequency. The frequency components of NRRO is the subtraction of the harmonics from TIR in frequency domain, so that NRRO in time domain can be obtained by Fourier inverse transformation of NRRO in frequency domain. This method can make the experiments simple without the index signal indispensable to time domain analysis. This research also shows that NRRO is caused by the defect frequencies of ball bearing. Even though the excitation force of ball bearing is independent of the rotational speed, the amplitude of NRRO is magnified near the resonance frequencies of the spindle motor. NRRO in axial direction is almost twice bigger than that in radial direction, because the spindle motor has smaller stiffness in axial direction.

This paper proposes a method for estimating the vibrational power supplied by a machine that generates excitation force to its supporting structure via the coupling points. The basis of the method is that the vibrational power can be calculated using the mechanical impedance and the velocity at the coupling points on the supporting structure. First, a method is described to estimate the mobilities at the coupling points when the machine is not separable from the supporting structure, then the vibrational power is calculated using the estimated mobilities and measured velocities at the coupling points. The mobilities are estimated from the result of impulsive testing of the coupled structure. The method is investigated using an experimental model. The estimated and measured values of the mobilities and the vibrational power are compared. It is shown that the estimated values agree well with the measured values.
The infrared, Raman, and jet-cooled laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene have been recorded and analyzed. The observed vibrations have been assigned to understand the conformational behaviors in its electronic ground (S0) and excited (S1) states. Ab initio at the HF/6-31G** level and molecular mechanics (MM3) force field calculations have been carried out to generate the complete normal mode frequencies of the molecule in its S0 state. The vibrational frequencies calculated from the ab initio method show a better agreement with the observed infrared and Raman frequencies than those calculated from the MM3 method. In several cases, the normal mode calculations were very helpful to clarify some ambiguities of previous assignments. In addition, the ring inversion process between two twisted conformers of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene has been reexamined utilizing ab initio calculation. The results show that the ring inversion energy is in the range of 3.7-4.3 kcal/mol which is higher than the previously reported AM1 value of 2.1 kcal/mol.
To prevent major cracking and failure during earthquakes, it is important to design reinforced concrete liquid storage structures, such as water and fuel storage tanks, properly for the hydrodynamic pressure loads caused by seismic excitations. There is a discussion in recent Codes that most of the base shear applied to liquid containment structures is resisted by inplane membrane shear rather than by transverse flexural shear. The purpose of this paper is to underline the importance of the membrane force system in carrying the base shear produced by hydrodynamic pressures in both rectangular and cylindrical tank structures. Only rigid tanks constrained at the base are considered. Analysis is performed for both tall and broad tanks to compare their behavior under seismic excitation. Efforts are made to quantify the percentage of base shear carried by membrane action and the consequent procedures that must be followed for safe design of liquid containing storage structures.

By using the general theoretical framework proposed recently for treating the fluorescence quenching kinetics, we investigate the effect of light pulse intensity on the decay of fluorescence which follows excitation of fluorophors by the light pulse of very short but finite duration. It is seen that conventional theory breaks down when the exciting light pulse has a pulse width comparable to the fluorescent lifetime and its intensity is very high. We also find that even when the light intensity is not too high, conventional theory may fail in either of the following cases: (i) when the quencher concentration is high, (ii) when there is an attractive potential of mean force between the fluorophor and quencher, or (iii) when the energy transfer from the fluorophor to the quencher may also occur at a distance, e.g., via dipole-dipole interaction. The validity of the predictions of the present theory may thus be tested by fluorescence quenching experiments performed under such situations.
This paper presents an investigation about superharmonic and subharmonic resonances of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam subjected to lateral harmonic load with damping effect based on the modified couple stress theory. As reinforcing phase, three different types of single walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) distribution are considered through the thickness in polymeric matrix. The governing nonlinear dynamic equation is derived based on the von Kármán nonlinearity with using of Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. Effects of different patterns of reinforcement, volume fraction, excitation force and the length scale parameter on the frequency-response curves of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam are investigated. The results show that volume fraction and the distribution of CNTs play an important role on superharmonic and subharmonic resonances of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beams.

The objective of this article is finding optimized locations of active mounts applied to 6-DOF beam structure with two active paths. When sinusoidal excitation forces are applied to the beam structure, secondary forces from two active mounts which can minimize (ideally becoming zero) transmitted forces are calculated mathematically and the vibration attenuation performance is validated through computer simulations. When the force applied to two active mounts are relatively low, those specific locations are considered as optimized location of active mounting system. As the location of mount changes, amplitude and phase of secondary forces in each path are analyzed with 3D plots. Based on the simulation results, a criterion for selecting mounting location is suggested and it would be very useful for selecting actuators for active mounts appropriately.
This paper presents nonlinear oscillations of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam subjected to lateral harmonic load with damping effect based on the modified couple stress theory. As reinforcing phase, three different types of single walled carbon nanotubes distribution are considered through the thickness in polymeric matrix. The non-linear strain-displacement relationship is considered in the von Kármán nonlinearity. The governing nonlinear dynamic equation is derived with using of Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The frequency response equation and the forced vibration response of the system are obtained. Effects of patterns of reinforcement, volume fraction, excitation force and the length scale parameter on the nonlinear responses of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam are investigated.

The problem of reducing the vibration level of elastic plates driven by multiple random point forces is analyzed in this study. First, the analytical solution for the vibration level of finite thin plates with four simply supported edges under the action of multiple random point force is derived. By assuming the plates to be lightly damped, an approximate solution for the vibration level of the plate is obtained. A numerical study is carried out to determine an optimal spacing distance between the multiple point forces in order to produce a relative minimum in the plate's vibration level. The optimal spacing distance is shown to depend on the given excitation band. The effects of wave cancellation in the near field of the multiple point forces are discussed by using the equivalence of certain stationary random responses and deterministic pulse responese.
Sloshing of the fluid having a free surface produces an impact force on a tank wall subjected to external excitation. This paper investigates the effect of cylindrical structures in a rectangular sloshing tank under translational harmonic excitations. By varying the number of installed cylinders in the tank, the characteristics of the free-surface deformation is experimentally observed, and the peak pressure on the tank wall is extracted by threshold values. To predict the peak pressure, the numerical simulation is also conducted using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), and the peak values are compared with the experimental results. Furthermore, pressure and velocity fields in the tank and free-surface shape are analyzed at the moment of impact.
