  • The absorption, fluorescence and fluorescence-excitation spectra of concentrated toluene solutions of selected para substituted trans-stilbene derivatives provide strong evidence for aggregation. A red-shifted fluorescence spectrum peaking at 420 nm gains in intensity as the stilbene concentration is increased. The excitation spectrum of this new emission is well to the red of the normal stilbene absorption spectrum, consistent with the appearance of a red shifted shoulder in the UV spectrum. Formation of a fluorescent ground state dimer (or higher aggregate) is proposed to account for these observations. The presence of polar substituents is crucial to the formation of this ground state complex.

  • $Mn^{4+}$-doped $CaAl_4O_7$ ($CA_2$) and $CaAl_{12}O_{19}$ ($CA_6$) powders were prepared under different conditions, with changes in the amounts of flux, Mn concentration, and mole ratio of $Al_2O_3$ to $CaCO_3$ in the starting mixtures, which affected the structure and the luminescence. $CA_2:Mn^{4+}$ and $CA_6:Mn^{4+}$ had the same excitation and emission spectra but with different intensities. The excitation spectra exhibited broad bands (320 - 470 nm) centered at 395 nm, while red emission bands were observed at 656 nm. The emission intensity of $CA_6:Mn^{4+}$ was nearly twice as high as that of $CA_2:Mn^{4+}$, as the $Mn^{4+}$ ions were located in an octahedral crystal field in the $CA_6$, but not in the $CA_2$.

  • Luminescence properties of $NaCa(PO_3)_3$ doped with $Tb^{3+}$ ions are investigated by optical and laser excitation spectroscopy. The phosphors were prepared by solidstate reaction method The X-ray diffraction(XRD) was used to analyze the crystal structure and the crystallinity of the samples. The excitation and emission spectra and decay curve of $NaCa(PO_3)_3:Tb^{3+}$(0.01 ~ 30mol%) were measured at room temperature. The f - d band of $Tb^{3+}$ is observed in the excitation spectra of $NaCa(PO_3)_3:Tb^{3+}$ in the wave length region 205 ~ 245 nm. Strong emission lines due to the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ transition and weak emission lines due to the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ transition are observed in the emission spectra of $NaCa(PO_3)_3:Tb^{3+}$. The energy transfer and cross relaxation between $Tb^{3+}$ ions are discussed in $NaCa(PO_3)_3:Tb^{3+}$ in the emission spectra and life time.

  • The ~1540 nm Er$^{3+}$ photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of Er-implanted Mg-codoped GaN (GaN:Er+Mg) exhibit that the excitation efficiency of a specific Er$^{3+}$ center among different Er$^{3+}$ centers existing in Er-implanted GaN is selectively enhanced, compared to Er-implanted undoped GaN (GaN:Er). In GaN:Er+Mg, the 1540 nm PL peaks characteristic of the so-called "violet-pumped" Er$^{3+}$ center and the ~2.8-3.4 eV (violet) PLE band are significantly strengthened by the Mg-doping. The intra-f absorption PLE bands associated with this "violet-pumped" center are also enhanced by this doping. The 1540 nm PL peaks originating from the violet-pumped center dominate the above-gap-excited Er$^{3+}$ PL spectrum of GaN:Er+Mg, whereas it was unobservable under above-gap excitation in GaN:Er. All of these results indicate that Mg doping increases the efficiency of trap-mediated excitation of Er$^{3+}$ emission in Er-implanted GaN.planted GaN.

  • The 77 K emission and excitation spectra, and 298 K infrared and absorption spectra of [Cr(progly)(2,2-tri)]CIO$_4$[progly=prolylglycinate,2,2-tri=N-(2-aminoethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine] have been measured. The vibrational intervals of the electronic ground state are extracted from emission and infrared spectra. The twelve electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions were assigned. Using the observed electronic transitions, a ligand field analysis was performed to determine the metaligand bonding properties for the coordinated atoms. It is found that the carboxylate oxygen of the progly is a strong $\sigma$-and $\pi$-donor while the peptide nitrogen has weak $\pi$-donor property toward chromium(III) ion.

  • A series of Dy3+, Sm3+, and Dy3+/Sm3+ doped Gd2WO6 phosphors were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that all of the diffraction peaks could be attributed to the monoclinic Gd2WO6 crystal structure, irrespective of the type and the concentration of activator ions. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectra of Dy3+-doped Gd2WO6 phosphors contained an intense charge transfer band centered at 302 nm in the range of 240-340 nm and two weak peaks at 351 and 386 nm. Under an excitation wavelength of 302 nm, the PL emission spectra consisted of two strong blue and yellow bands centered at 482 nm and 577 nm. The PL emission spectra of the Sm3+-doped Gd2WO6 phosphors had a series of three peaks centered at 568 nm, 613 nm, and 649 nm, corresponding to the 6G5/26H5/2, 6G5/26H9/2, and 6G5/26H11/2 transitions of Sm3+, respectively. The PL emission spectra of the Dy3+- and Sm3+-codoped Gd2WO6 phosphors showed the blue and yellow emission lines originating from the 4F9/26H15/2 and 4F9/24H13/2 transitions of Dy3+ and reddish-orange and red emission bands due to the 4G5/26H7/2 and 4G5/26H9/2 transitions of Sm3+. As the concentration of Sm3+ increased from 1 to 15 mol%, the intensities of two PL spectra emitted by the Dy3+ ions gradually decreased, while those of the three emission bands due to the Sm3+ ions slowly increased, thus producing the color change from white to orange. The CIE color coordinates of Gd2WO6:5 mol% Dy3+, 1 mol% Sm3+ phosphors were (0.406, 0.407), which was located in the warm white light region.

  • Thulium (Tm) has been incorporated into $YAlO_3$ and $YTa_7O_{19}$ host materials to obtain blue phosphors. $Tm^{3+}$-doped $YAlO_3$ and $YTa_7O_{19}$ phosphors were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method. According to the results of excitation and emission spectra measured at room temperature, the blue emission intensity of $Tm^{3+}$-doped $YTa_7O_{19}$, peaking at 455 nm was much higher than that of $Tm^{3+}-doped\; YAlO_34, peaking at 458 nm. The maximum of relative intensity of $Tm^{3+}-doped\; YAlO_3\; and\; YTa_7O_{19}$ was obtained at the doping concentration of 0.016 and 0.120 mol% $Tm^{3+}$, respectively. These emission spectra revealed the concentration quenching effect.

  • It has been reported that at low temperature region, poloxamers existed as a monomer. Upon warming, an equilibrium between unimers and micelles was established, and finally micelle aggregates were formed at higher temperature. In this study, the fluorescence spectroscopy was used to study the micelle formation of the poloxamer 407 in aqueous solution. The excitation and emission spectra of pyrene, a fluorescence probe, were measured as a function of the concentration of poloxamer 407 and temperature. A blue shift in the emission spectrum and a red shift in the excitation spectrum were observed as pyrene transferred from an aqueous to a hydrophobic micellar environment. From the $I_1/I_3 and I_{339}/I_{333}$ results, critical micelle concentration (cmc) and critical micelle temperature (cmt) were determined. Also, from the fluorescence spectra of the probe molecules such as 8-anilino-1-naphthalene sulfonic acid and 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde, the blue shift of the $\lambda_{max}$ was observed. These results suggest a decrease in the polarity of the microenvironment around probe because of micelle formation. The poloxamer 407 above cmc strongly complexed with hydrophobic fluorescent probes and the binding constant of complex increased with increasing the hydrophobicity of the probe.

  • Enormous interest in trivalent rare-earth (RE) ions activated luminescent materials has been gaining owing to their promising applications in bio-imaging, solar cells, white light-emitting diodes and field-emission displays. Among these trivalent RE ions, dysprosium (Dy3+) was widely investigated due to its unique photoluminescence (PL) emissions. A series of Dy3+-activated CaWO4 phosphors were prepared by a facile high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction, PL spectra, cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra as well as PL decay curves were used to characterize the prepared samples. Under ultraviolet light excitation, the characteristic emissions of Dy3+ ions were observed in all the obtained phosphors. Furthermore, the PL emission intensity increased gradually with the increment of Dy3+ ion concentration, reaching its maximum value at an optimized Dy3+ ion concentration. Additionally, color-tunable emissions were obtained in Dy3+-activated CaWO4 system by adjusting the Dy3+ ion concentration and excitation wavelength. Ultimately, strong CL properties were observed in Dy3+-activted CaWO4 phosphors. These results suggested that the Dy3+-activted CaWO4 phosphors may have potential applications in the field of miniature color displays.
