  • Portable fuel cells are commonly operated in the dead-end mode because of such as high fuel utilization. However, the performance of such systems deteriorates continuously with an increase in the amount of by-products such as water vapor and nitrogen. In this study, to verify the effect of water vapor on Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs), constant-load experiments were carried out for a current density of 600 mA/cm2 and a voltage of 0.4 V, respectively. The performance of the cell was more stable under constant voltage conditions than under constant current density conditions. Condensed water accumulated in the anode channel near the cell outlet. The experimental results show how the relative humidity (RH = 0.15, 0.4 and 0.75) of air at the cathode side affect the performance of PEMFCs with dead-end anode. At RH values higher than 0.15, the mean power density increased by up to 51% and the mean purge duration decreased by up to 25% compared to the corresponding initial values.

  • Effects of PbO on the repassivation kinetics and characteristics of passive film of Alloy 690 were examined to elucidate the influences of PbO on the SCC resistance of that alloy. The repassivation kinetics of the alloy was analyzed in terms of the current density flowing from the scratch, i(t), as a function of the charge density that has flowed from the scratch, q(t). Repassivation on the scratched surface of the alloy occurred in two kinetically different processes; passive film initially nucleated and grew according to the place exchange model in which log i(t) is linearly proportional to q(t), and then grew according to the high field ion conduction model in which log i(t) is linearly proportional to 1/q(t) with a slope of cBV. The cBV is found to be a parameter representing repassivation rate and hence SCC susceptibility of the alloy. The lower the value of cBV, the faster the repassivation rate and the higher the SCC resistance of an alloy. Addition of PbO to pH 4 and 10 solutions increased the value of cBV of alloy 690, reflecting slower repassivation rate than without PbO. The change in the value of cBV was grater in pH 10 than in pH 4. The increase in SCC susceptibility of alloy 690 with the addition of PbO to solution was presumably due to the Cr-depletion in the outer parts of passive film of the alloy with an incorporation of Pb compounds in the film, which was revealed by Mott-Schottky, AES and XPS analyses.

  • Epidemiologic studies have shown that low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a strong risk factor, whilst high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) reduces the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Therefore, strategies to manage dyslipidemia in an effort to prevent or treat CHD have primarily attempted at decreasing LDL-C and raising HDL-C levels. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) mediates the exchange of cholesteryl ester for triglycerides between HDL and VLDL and LDL. We have published the first report indicating that a group of Japanese patients who were lacking CETP had extremely high HDL-C levels, low LDL-C levels and a low incidence of CHD. Animal studies, as well as clinical and epidemiologic evidences, have suggested that inhibition of CETP provides an effective strategy to raise HDL-C and reduce LDL-C levels. Four CETP inhibitors have substantially increased HDL-C levels in dyslipidemic patients. This review will discuss the current status and future prospects of CETP inhibitors in the treatment of CHD. At present anacetrapib by Merck and evacetrapib by Eli Lilly are under development. By 100mg of anacetrapib HDL-C increased by 138%, and LDL-C decreased by 40%. Evacetrapib 500 mg also showed dramatic 132% increase of HDL-C, while LDL-C decreased by 40%. If larger, long-term, randomized, clinical end point trials could corroborate other findings in reducing atherosclerosis, CETP inhibitors could have a significant impact in the management of dyslipidemic CHD patients. Inhibition of CETP synthesis by antisense oligonucleotide or small molecules will produce more similar conditions to human CETP deficiency and may be effective in reducing atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. We are expecting the final data of prospective clinical trials by CETP inhibitors in 2015.

  • When natural rubber dissolved in toluene comes into use as a binder of carbon powder, the volatilization of solvent just after the construction of biosensor brought the mechanical robustness on the paste. This characteristic satisfied the pre-requisite condition for the practical use of carbon paste electrode and a biosensor for the determination of hydrogen peroxide was designed. In order to evaluate its electrochemical qualitative and quantitative behaviors, various electrochemical kinetic parameters of the electrode, e.g. the symmetry factor (${\alpha}$, 0.37), the exchange current density ($i_0$, $0.075mAcm^{-2}$), the capacitance of double layer ($C_d$, $9.7{\times}10^{-3}F$), the time constant (${\tau}_A$, 0.92 s), the maximum current ($i_{max}$, $5.92{\times}10^{-7}Acm^{-2}$), the Michaelis constant ($K_M$, $1.99{\times}10^{-3}M$) and others were investigated. Results show that natural rubber is a promising binder of carbon powder.

  • Alkaline water electrolysis has been commercialized as the only large-scale method for a long time to produce hydrogen and the technology is superior to other methods such as photochemical, thermochemical water splitting, and thermal decomposition method in view of efficiency and related technical problem. However, such conventional electrolyzer do not have high electric efficiency and productivity to apply to large scale hydrogen production for energy or chemical feedstocks. Solid polymer electrolyte water electrolysis using a perfluorocation exchange membrane as an $H^+$ ion conductor is considered to be a promising method, because of capability for operating at high current densities and low cell voltages. So, this is a good technology for the storage of electricity generated by photovoltaic power plants, wind generators and other energy conversion systems. One of the most important R&D topics in electrolyser is how to minimize cell voltage and maximize current density in order to increase the productivity of the electrolyzer. A commercialized technology is the hot press method which the film type electrocatalyst is hot-pressed to soild polymer membrane in order to eliminate the contact resistance. Various technologies, electrocatalyst formed over Nafion membrane surface by means of nonelectrolytic plating process, porous sintered metal(titanium powder) or titanium mesh coated with electrocatalyst, have been studied for preparation of membrane-electrocatalyst composites. In this study some experiments have been conducted at a solid polymer electrolyte water electrolyzer, which consisted of single cell stack with an electrode area of $25cm^2$ in a unipolar arrangement using titanium mesh coated with electrocatalyst.

  • A pine needle-embedded graphite enzyme electrode, of which bonding agent is CSM rubber, was newly designed and its electrochemistry was studied based on the amperometry. It involved a ground green leaves of pine tree as a zymogen together with electrochemical mediator, ferrocene within the paste. The plots of ln($i(1-e^{nf{\eta}})$) vs. ${\eta}$ and Lineweaver-Burk at the low potential (-100 to -500 mV) showed good linearities indicating that the amperometric response is by the catalytic power of pine peroxidase. Electrochemical parameters obtained, symmetry factor (${\alpha}$, 0.17), limiting current ($i_1$, 1.99 $A/cm^2$), exchange current density ($i_0$, $5.86{\times}10^{-5}\;A/cm^2$), Michaelis constant ($K_M$, $1.68{\times}10^{-3}$ M) and many others showed that pine peroxidase discharges the role of catalyst quantitatively on the electrode surface. Those proved that the practical use of pine peroxidase is promising in place of the marketed.

  • Hydrogen permeability is widely used to evaluate the polymer membrane durability of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFC). Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) is mainly used to measure hydrogen permeability easily. There are many differences in LSV measurement method among researchers, and it is often difficult to compare the results. Therefore, in this study, we tried to confirm the accuracy by comparing the hydrogen permeability of LSV method and gas chromatograph which is difficult to measure but accurate value. The LSV method used the DOE and NEDO methods. When the hydrogen permeability was measured by varying the temperature and the relative humidity, the DOE LSV method showed an accuracy of less than 5% in the error range compared with the GC method. In the NEDO LSV method, the error was reduced when the hydrogen permeation current density was determined at the current value of 0.3 V as the DOE method.

  • In this research, we evaluated the performance and characteristics of carbon supported PtM (M = Ni and Y) alloy catalysts (PtM/Cs) synthesized by a modified polyol method. With the PtM/Cs employed as a catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of cathodes in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), their catalytic and ORR activities and electrical performance were investigated and compared with those of commercial Pt/C. Their particle sizes, particle distributions and electrochemically active surface areas (EAS) were measured by TEM and cyclic voltammetry (CV), while their ORR activity and electrical performance were explored using linear sweeping voltammetries with rotating disk electrodes and rotating ring-disk electrodes as well as PEMFC single cell tests. TEM and CV measurements show that PtM/Cs have the compatible particle size and EAS with Pt/C. When it comes to ORR activity, PtM/C showed the equivalent or better half-wave potential, kinetic current density, transferred electron number per oxygen molecule and $H_2O_2$ production(%) to or than commerical Pt/C. Based on results gained by the three electrode tests, when the PEMFC single cell tests were carried out, the current density measured at 0.6 V and maximum power density of PEMFC single cell adopting PtM/C catalysts were better than those adopting Pt/C catalyst. It is therefore concluded that PtM/C catalysts synthesized by modified polyol can result in the equivalent or better ORR catalytic capability and PEMFC performance to or than commercial Pt/C catalyst.

  • Poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) and polyether imide (PEI) were sulfonated and aminated to create sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (SPPO) and aminated polyether imide (APEI), respectively. Characterization of the SPPO and APEI were performed via measurements of FTIR, thermogravimetry (TGA), swelling degree, ion exchange capacity (IEC), and ion conductivity. Next, the surfaces of these membranes were modified by surface fluorination at room temperature. The surface fluorinated SPPO and APEI membranes underwent characterization again for the mentioned measurements to determine any differences. The 3 types of bi-polar membranes were prepared by varying the IEC of the APEI at a fixed SPPO IEC value, which were applied to the low and high NaCl concentration of feed solution at the different current density, respectively. The hypochlorite concentration derived from the surface fluorinated membranes was dependent on the IEC of the APEI and ranged from 491 to 692 ppm at $80mA/m^2$. At low current density of $5mA/m^2$, the hypochlorite concentrations ranged from 18 to 28 ppm for the 4 hrs surface fluorinated membranes and their durability increased greatly.

  • The separation of inorganic salt from amino acid solution using was performed electrodialysis. In order to review the availability of electrodialysis using isoelectric point of amino acid as a bio-separation technique, electrodialysis stacks were designed using ion exchange membrane. Separation of NaCl from amino acid solution was performed in the condition similar to amino acid fermentation process. To obtain otimum conditions of separation, leakage of amino acid depending of pH and limiting current density were measured. On the basis of optimum condition, removal of NaCl and leakage of amino acid were investigated quantitatively in batch and continuous process, and current efficiencies were also obtained. As a result of batch experiment for 11 hours each amino acid solution, removal efficiencies of NaCl were in the ranges of 96.1~96.2%. Amino acid leakage rate of glycine, methionine, alanine were 2.5, 1.7, 2.0% respectively. Current efficiencies were in the ranges of 44.5~44.6%. As a result of continuous experiment in various flow rate of each amino acid solution, it took 120 ~ 150 min to reach to steady state. Removal efficiency of NaCl was increased as the flow rate was decreased, but current efficiency was decreased. At the steady states, there were no leakage of amino acid.
