  • Because archaeological artifacts are often destroyed during physical excavation, the data archaeologists gather in the field is rich with research potential. Few in Korea have paid attention to digital archives for archaeological data or argued for their development. This paper considers the significance and necessity of archaeological data and digital archives for its preservation and access. It also raises awareness of the need to develop a Korean national archaeological data digital archive. The paper first overviews the nature of the archaeological discipline, data, and digital archives. Then it investigates well-known, global cases involving digital archiving of archaeological data. Based on these foundations, the paper discusses principal and prior challenges to developing a Korean national archaeological data digital archive.

  • This case study has been prepared to provide the practical data about construction of temporary shoring facilities (i.e. braced sheet pile excavation) and to utilize the case study information effectively for design and construction of future facilities. This case study includes information such as 1) installing measurement devices to monitor the deformation of the sheet pile walls and the subsoil in the vicinity after establishing the criteria for the sheet pile deflection; 2) monitoring the actual movement of the temporary facility after setting up the survey control standard (due to the movement of the temporary facility) : 3) inspecting the suitability of the temporary facility construction: and 4) analyzing and studying the result of the tension test after installing ground anchors.

  • This paper reports the application of GPS (Global Positioning System) technique into the geotechnical information system. Typical example of such application can be the database of logging data. Other examples can be found from the surveying for road work, excavation work, landslide mapping and image processing of slope face. This paper also reports the enhancement method of the accuracy. The results from this study confirms that GPS could be a powerful tool for the future geotechnical investigation works in Korea.

  • This study aimed to develop upper and lower bounds to predict the tunnel support pressure under the pile tip during the circular tunnel excavation. Most previous studies on the upper and lower bound methods were carried out for the single ground structures, e.g., retaining wall, foundation, ground anchor and tunnel, in the homogeneous ground conditions, since the pile-soil-tunnel interaction problem is very complicated and sophisticated to solve using those bound methods. Therefore, in the lower bound approach two appropriate stress fields were proposed for single pile and tunnel respectively, and then they were superimposed. In addition, based on the superimposition several failure mechanisms were proposed for the upper bound solution. Finally, these upper bound mechanisms were examined by shear strain data from the laboratory model test and numerical analysis using finite element method.

  • Practical solutions that are available today for assessing stability of tunnel working face are largely based on the concept of critical stability ratio. The accuracy of a prediction of the soil behavior in the working face, thus, depends on the ability of the solution to completely and accurately describe the stress fields or kinematics generated by the excavation and the accuracy of the undrained shear strength of the soil introduced in the computation. This paper reviews the selected solutions describing stability of the tunnel heading in squeezing ground, and suggests a reference solution which is established based on comparison of the solutions and field data on stability of tunnel headings in clays. Although dealing with the shear strength determination is an important companion part of the geotechnical prediction for stability of the tunnel heading in clays, this part is beyond the scope of this paper at this time.

  • This paper aimed to identify the units of measuring scale in Hwangnyongsa temple planning with the published excavation survey reports. Hwangyongsa temple site was planned under Silla Capital's urban planning in 6~7C, its full size was $800{\times}800$, and main temple was $400{\times}515$ of Goguryeo's system of measurement. Main hall was located in the center of Hwangnyongsa temple site, and its location could be seen that there was the arrangement of main temple divided into 3 : 2. Building plan measuring units proved to be 351~356mm and 294~ 296mm by analyzing measured data of remains. Lecture hall and Wooden pagoda were rebuilt by using the ancestors' units of measuring scale again and Bell hall was not planned by Tang's system of measurement in middle of 8C. In this respect, it would be important to have a deliberate attitude and lay down stereotypes on research of the units of measuring scale in ancient architecture.

  • As a demand for underground structure is increasing with more parking and retail spaces required. Various construction methods are reviewed and selected for each specific site for economical and fast construction. In this study, factors for selecting construction methods were categorized for substructure construction. Construction processes of substructure are consisted of methods for excavation, earth retaining systems, and placement of slabs. Factors for the selection of substructure construction method are the condition of surrounding, geotechnical, information and constraint by comfortness for others nearby. After survey for the construction data of 5 different sites, analysis about reliable substructure construction selection method was suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and succeed local foods such as Yangte miyuck-gook, Getjango-tang, Boongjango-gook, Sook doenjang-gook, Mulmegi-gook and Mukjang-gook in the Namhae region. To derive standardized recipes; first, a test recipe was prepared based on the information obtained from literature material, personal interviews of Namhae natives, and surveys of restaurant recipes through restaurant owners and chefs in the Namhae area. After that, standardized recipes were made in accordance with the collected data. Then, CAN Program 2.0 was used for the nutritional evaluation. Most of these fish soups contained high percentages of protein, minerals and vitamins. Getjango-tang and boongjango-gook were higher than the other foods in most of nutrition contents, which were particularly good sources of calcium and iron.
