A study on the Decoration of Women's costume style from the 18th century to the 19th century (18세기부터 19세기까지 여성 복식스타일에 나타난 장식에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims at looking into women's costume style seen in 18th century to 19th century, and reason out a major decoration, then the formative and aesthetic characteristics of the decoration were analyzed. Research results are same as follows. Firstly, the style of women's costumes in the 18th and 19th century includes the Rococo style, Polonaise style, Neo-classic style, Romantic style and Bustle-style. The main decorations shown in these styles are the gather pleats drape of Fold decoration, the flat embroidery quilting of embroidery decoration, and the ribbon braid fringe button feather and fur of attachment decoration. Secondly, the analyzed results found the formative and aesthetic characteristics of the decoration in the 18th and 19th century women's costumes. Fold decorations appeared as a voluminous property in the form of gown mantua jacket pelisse and dress. Especially, femininity and exaggeration were expressed through greatly inflated skirts. Embroidery decoration appeared as planarity by making patterns of gown mantua jacket stomacher overskirt coat dress shawl and dolman. Especially, exaggeration and extravagance were expressed through embroidered mantua surfaces with peony rose poppy primrose daffodil morning glory tulip leaf and lattice patterns in variety of colored silk threads. Attachment decorations were mixed with elements of heterogeneity added to jackets, coats, gowns, petticoats, stomachers, mantuas, pelisses, mantles, dolmans, capes, overskirts and dresses. In particular, exaggeration and extravagance strongly expressed through the decoration with white fox fur at the hemline, neckline and sleeves of cream colored silk dolman.

  • Sometimes characterized graphic map rather than realistic graphic map can help users to understand information more easily. This paper tried to reveal the relation between the methodology to create outline on the map using caricature automatic algorism and level of human cognition. Caricature algorism such as exaggeration transformation algorism, joint transformation algorism and simplification algorism were used to create outline on the map. In order to apply exaggeration transformation algorism and joint transformation algorism, the method to create average form of the object were developed. We survey how users recognize the similarity of the characterized map with the real map when realistic map is simplified by certain value of simplification rate and transformed into certain value of exaggeration rate or joint transformation rate. We also survey how users recognize the similarity differently according to the scale of the map. As a result of this study, the method to calculate the optimal data is developed for users to recognize caricatured map effectively by shifting scale. This data can be used as basic data, when map developers create outline of map with programming code on computer

Expressive characteristics of make-up based on genderless fashion design in the 2020 S/S collection (2020 S/S 컬렉션에 나타난 젠더리스 패션 디자인에 따른 메이크업 표현 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to study the beauty-coordination characteristics of Genderless fashion, which is emerging as a new trend by analyzing the trend in the latest collection and classify the resulting expression characteristics of make-up. Methods and scope of the study were based on collections published in the 2020 S/S season and 35 out of 84 designers with design elements were selected to analyze the garments most likely to be genderless. The characteristics of the expression of the genderless derived through this analysis were classified into compromise, androgyny, sensuality, exaggeration, enjoyment, and historicity. Compromise was the highest, and the lowest was for enjoyment of the classifications. The designer's work according to the characteristics of each expression shows that the pieces by Saint Laurent were the highest in compromise, sensuality, and historicity, and the pieces by Maison Margiela were the highest in androgyny while Balenciaga was the highest in exaggeration and enjoyment. Compromise represented a mixture of discord, such as incongruous bonding and coloring of heterogeneous materials, and androgyny led to the use of silhouettes and colors, with sensuality utilizing see-through material and incision lines allowing for physical exposure. Exaggeration intentionally destroyed the existing concept by breaking the overall balance of the human body through the enlargement of certain parts of the body, while enjoyment showed unexpectedness by destroying the line and sides of the garment. Lastly, historicity was analyzed for its retro design that transcends time and space with regional cultural and period characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to reestablish the innovative and experimental designs of Rei Kawakubo by considering and analyzing the flow on the avant-garde nature of her design collection from 1981 to 2017. Design trends such as the art trend, silhouette, color, and expressive technique showcased in Rei Kawakubo's collection from 1981 spring/summer to 2017 spring/summer were examined through precedent studies, books, internet materials, and the avant-garde expressive nature of her designs appearing in modern fashion. Additionally, this study considers the definition of avant- garde and analyzes the expressive nature of Rei Kawakubo's 137 works from the Comme des Garcons collection, exhibited in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a result of this examination, the avant-garde expressive nature seen in modern fashion was classified into the following themes: historicity, de-structure, exaggeration, intermixture, and surrealism. As a result of reclassifying these characteristics according to historical flow, the historicty, intermixture, and de-structure appeared in the 1980s, while intermixture, exaggeration, and de-structure appeared in the 1990s. More recently, historicity, intermixture, and de-structure appeared in the 2000s, and intermixture, de-structure, exaggeration, and surrealism appeared in the 2010s. The present study is significant in providing theoretical material for the more innovative and various design development in diverse domains while helping to define and understand the avant-garde expression through Rei Kawakubo's collection.

The Characteristics of Directing in Digital Animation : Combination of Reality and Exaggeration (디지털 애니메이션의 연출 특성 -사실적 표현과 과장성의 융합-)

  • The application of computer graphics, which is characterized by reality, has even reinforced reality of image and motion expression in digital animation. But reality of digital animation succeeds to traditional aesthetic characteristics of animation for overcoming physical limitations of the real world and realizing imagination through transformation, rather than copying actuality as it is. But it does not succeed to drawing animation wholly. Digital animation adds cartoonish transformation, based on three-dimensional realistic expression and those animation situations look as if they get over realistic restrictions, while drawing animation constantly reminds of mediality in drawing motion, based on two-dimensional plane and handwork. n other words, cartoonish exaggeration that is intermittently inserted between these reinforced realities, expresses digital animation's own aesthetic characteristics as a dialectical sum by crashing into contrast coming from a cross between reality and imagination.

Characteristics of Character Costume in the Theme Park (테마파크 캐릭터 코스튬의 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to research on concept, consisting factors, and specialties of theme park' character costumes to understand better about character costumes as well as to establish fundamental research data. The characteristics of character costumes in the theme park are as follows. First, theme park' character costumes are personified so that visitors may feel friendly and have emotional communication with them. Specially, costume that anthropomorphize an animal(85.3%) and silhouette of lozenge style(86.8%) dominated the highest weight. Animal figures are walking upright and wearing human's clothes. They communicate with visitors using mime actions. Second, various types of body proportion is applied to highlight the characteristics of character costume. Most character costumes are applied with unrealistic body proportion. This unrealistic body proportion give abnormal image and looks funny. The important factor is size of their head. Especially, 3.5 body proportion(78.9%) is general. Third, simplification, exaggeration, shrinkage, and modification are other factors. Simplification is applied differently by parts. Pocket, collar details are simplified to clarify the character's image. More simplification can lead to ommission. For their head, peculiar parts look stand out but other parts are simplified to stress their characteristics. Exaggeration is used with shrinkage to give strong impression to visitors. Forms are broken intentionally and they are modified. They look impressive because they are not harmonized. It is unexpected image and induces humor and familiar feelings. Matter of stylization includes exaggeration, shrinkage, modification and movement of actors that have tangible factor of character costume.

Representation of Curl Exaggeration, Cohesion, Adhesion and Stiffness in Wet Curly Hair

  • Simulating the cohesion and stiffness of wet hair or fur in physics-based simulations is one of the most challenging problems. Wet hair or fur is characterized by bunching and stiffening at the ends, a phenomenon that can be seen in wet animal fur or hair. In addition, when wet hair interacts with a solid, adhesion occurs, but this problem becomes difficult to solve due to the different distribution and balance of forces in curly hair. In traditional methods, wet hair is represented by hand or by using static hairstyles to represent wet curls and hair. However, how to depict the details of wet curly hair has not been actively researched. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to efficiently model the curl exaggeration, cohesion, adhesion, and stiffness of wet curly hair. The proposed method efficiently simulates cohesion and integrates stiffness constraints with curl dynamics to reliably control hair elasticity.

A study of creative humor represented in Moschino's works (모스키노의 패션 세계에 반영된 창조적 유머)

  • This study is to assist in developing creative designs based on the humor available in the fashion world of Moschino. For the research method, this writing examined literature on humor and Moschino's fashion world and analyzed Moschino's fashion collection, show window, Maison Moschino, and collaborative products to conduct an empirical analysis of humor shown to the fashion media. The research results are as follows. The humor in Moschino's fashion appeared in the form of surrealistic humor with the depaysement technique, deconstructive wit in clothing, such as distortion, change, or exaggeration, and textual humor, including brand symbols, logos, and graffiti. Collection pieces indicated the brand's confirmative identity based on humor with the surrealistic depaysement technique and deconstructive wit through irregular phenomena, such as change, distortion, exaggeration, and illusion in clothing form. Additionally, such attributes added to Moschino's wit and humor in decorative costume components as graphic images, graffiti, and brand symbols, including smile, love, and reversal. The show window display delivered surprises and smiles through the production of surrealistic space borrowed from various objects. In particular, performance with surrealistic images helped to show the characteristics of parodic humor. Maison Moschino was a surrealistic space for the concept of the fairy tale and for practical experience, thus working as a communication channel for humor and emotion. Collaborative products also clearly reflected the identity of the designer's own humor, which showed scarcity value as well as differentiation.

Simpson Style Caricature based on MLS

  • We present a novel approach to producing facial caricature with Simpson cartoon style based on Moving Least Squares (MLS). We take advantage of employing the caricature stylization rule of caricature artist, Justin. Our method allows Simpson-style cartoon character similar to user's features by using Justin's technique, which is a set of caricature stylization rules. Our method transforms input photo image into Simpson style caricature by using MLS approximation. The unique characteristics of user in the photo can be detected by comparing to the mean face feature and the input face feature extracted by AAM(Active Appearance Model). To exaggerate the detected unique characteristics, we set up the exaggeration rules using Justin's technique. In addition, during the cartooning process, user's hairs and accessories are used to the deformed image to make a close resemblance. Our method preserves the reliable and stylized caricature through the exaggeration rules of the actual caricature artist's techniques. From this study, we can easily create a Simpson-style cartoon caricature to resemble user's features by combining a caricature with existing cartoon researches.

  • Titles of Nintendo DS are frequently use humor to help users fall in short time. Among many humor element, many titles use exaggeration. It is because 'exaggeration' is the best instrument to make users understand humor without complex cognitive process. Therefore, portable game using humor storytelling as a strategy for attracting various people.
