Participatory Web Users’ Information Activities and Credibility Assessment

  • Assessment of information credibility is a ubiquitous human activity given that people constantly make decisions and selections based on the value of information in a variety of information seeking and use contexts. Today, people are increasingly engaging in diverse online activities beyond searching for and reading information, including activities such as creating, tagging and rating content, shopping, and listening to and watching multimedia content. The Web 2.0 environment presents new challenges for people because the burden of information evaluation is shifted from professional gatekeepers to individual information consumers. At the same time, however, it also provides unprecedented opportunities for people to use tools and features that help them to make informed credibility judgments by relying on other people's ratings and recommendations. This paper introduces fundamental notions and dimensions of credibility, and contends that credibility assessment can be best understood with respect to human information behavior because it encompasses both the level of effort people exert as well as the heuristics they employ to evaluate information. The paper reports on a survey study investigating people's credibility judgments with respect to online information, focusing on the constructs, heuristics, and interactions involved in people's credibility assessment processes within the context of their everyday life information activities. Using an online activity diary method, empirical data about people's online activities and their associated credibility assessments were collected at multiple points throughout the day for three days. The results indicate that distinct credibility assessment heuristics are emerging as people engage in diverse online activities involving more user-generated and multimedia content. A heuristic approach suggests that people apply mental shortcuts or rules of thumb in order to minimize the amount of cognitive effort and time required to make credibility judgments. The paper discusses why a heuristic approach is key to reaching a more comprehensive understanding of people's credibility assessments within the information-abundant online environment.

The Types of Infant Care Curricula Based on Analysis of Infants Care Plans (영아반 보육계획안 분석에 따른 프로그램 유형)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions and characteristics of weekly and daily child care programs for infants, to provide a basis for the improvement of infant care quality. Weekly and daily curricula of 18 classes for one and two-year-olds classes (9 for each ages) from childcare centers in D city were collected from Nov. 2009 to February 2010. The results are as following: first, classes for one-year-olds plan 6-25 activities and classes for two-year-olds plan 12-30 activities weekly, with differences in the number of weekly activities according to the childcare centers. The number of weekly activities should be planned considering infants' interest as well as educational continuity of the activities. Second, the investigation of daily activities showed that the routine activities planned for one-year-olds were for total of 310-600 minutes and for two-year-olds 310-540 minutes. Among these, on average of 66% of the time was planned for everyday life such as eating and napping. The rest of time was dedicated to indoor and outdoor free play. However a few centers allocated more time for group activities according to subjects compared to free play. A curriculum composed of group activities ignoring infants' individual developmental differences should not be encouraged. Last, the results of cluster analyses on weekly and daily curricula in terms of the number of activities and time, duration, number of group activities and time showed that curricula for infants could be characterized into two types: "free play" and "group activity" curricula.

The Effect of HASA Program on the Science Related Attitudes, Science Knowledge and Scientific Inquiry Skills (HASA 프로그램이 학생들의 과학적 태도 및 과학 지식, 과학 탐구 능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate science related attitudes, scientific knowledge, and scientific inquiry skills of middle school students when HASA(3H-hand, head, heart-at Science Activity) programs were applied to them. The HASA program is a program developed as an alternative to the current educational system. There are some basic principles for developing this program; it should be fun or of interest to students; it should be a manual activity that students can do with their own hands; it should be found in everyday life; and it's final goal is to improve scientific attitudes. The learning program consists of a series of 10 activities (10 periods). One hundred and sixty-two middle school students (7th graders) participated in the study and were divided into three groups. The HASA group (N=58) was exposed to the HASA program and the Lecture group (N=59) was exposed to the expository method of learning scientific knowledge, and the Lab group (N=45) was exposed to the experiment through textbooks. The results were as follows: 1) the HASA group was marginally higher than others but with no significant difference in science related attitudes; 2) the Lecture group had a significantly greater level of achievement in science knowledge; 3) There was no difference in the improvement of scientific inquiry skills.

  • In this paper, daily life stress monitoring system is proposed. The proposed wireless ECG module, reducing the noise and increasing the size of signal, amplification circuit was designed for. Using HRV(Heart Rate Variability), extracted by measuring R-wave, stress diagnostic algorithms to assess the stress of human emotion were developed. For monitoring the activities, the proposed system is consist of small rectangular size for portable and by simple measurement it is possible to measure at any time. Through experiments, the proposed approach to represent user's stress level can be confirmed. Through that, it can see appropriate structure to obtain R-wave for stress assess as well as high resemblance to the clinical electrocardiogram.   • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of obesity, dietary habits, and nutritional status by age among low-income women, using data from the fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007~2009). Subjects were 8,356 women aged 20 and over. The subjects were classified into four groups by age. Dietary data from 24-hr recall methods were used to analyze nutritional status. The prevalence of obesity in the 50~64 years age group was significantly higher than those of the other age groups. Among age groups, malnutrition was the highest in the 65-and-over age group. It appears that women in the 20~29 and 65-and-over age groups were the highest nutritional risk. The percentage of carbohydrates in total energy intake was higher and the percentages of protein and fat were lower in the 65-and-over age group than other groups. Frequency of skipping breakfast was lower in women aged 65-and-over, and moderate physical activity significantly decreased with increasing age. Awareness of dietary guidelines was higher in women aged 30~49 years than other groups, whereas it was lower in those aged 65-and-over years. Adherence to dietary guidelines of 'eating a variety of foods from each food group' was significantly lower in women aged 65-and-over years than those of other groups. However adherence to dietary guidelines of 'eating breakfast everyday with a pleasant mind' was significantly lower in women aged 20~29 years than those of other groups. Therefore, this study shows that low income women have various nutritional problems by age group, and we should support a tailored approach to improve their nutritional status.

A Study Evaluating a Program for the Interaction between Children in Institutional Care and their Original Families (시설아동과 원가족 상호작용 프로그램 평가 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the program for enhancing the interaction capacity between the child care institutions and the original family (associate) and propose a program suitable for the child care institutions. The program was conducted at two institution located in Seoul and Cheongju, and the process evaluation and outcome evaluation were conducted. First, the problems that appeared in the process evaluation were recruiting and maintaining participants. As a result of the satisfaction of each program, it was found that the satisfaction of the program sharing the various experiences or sharing the small daily life was high, and it was positive for the improvement of the relationship. Parents showed improvement in the post -test rather than the pre-test. Through qualitative assessment, positive evaluations were made in programs where the family participated in activities that could not be done together in the camp or everyday life, rather than just one-time activity programs.

  • Analyzing the psychological and pedagogical literature, we found the researchers' interest in the problem posed. The concept of "culture of professional communication» is considered, which is interpreted as the level of realization of creative abilities, exchange of messages, organization of mutual understanding, mutual knowledge in the process of professionally directed interaction between subjects, in which interpersonal relationships arise, manifest and form. The concept of "professional culture of communication of a teacher" is interpreted. The motives that are socially significant in the professional communication of the teacher are highlighted. The necessity of forming a culture of professional communication among students, in particular by means of information technologies in the present, is clarified. The interactive component of professional communication is considered. The types of interactions between people in everyday life (ritual and entertainment interaction, joint purposeful activity, no interaction, game and interpersonal interaction) are identified. Traditional and specific forms and methods of teaching are written out. All interactive technologies carried out by means of information technologies are conventionally divided into four groups, depending on the form of educational activity appropriate for their use (pair (work of the subject with the teacher or peers one on one by means of Information Technologies); frontal (the teacher simultaneously teaches a group of subjects by means of Information Technologies); group or cooperative (all subjects teach each other by means of Information Technologies); individual (independent work of the subject using Information Technologies)). In the higher education institution, future specialists should learn knowledge, acquire skills on the basic rules of the culture of professional communication and methods of interaction and their effective use, which is possible with the use of Information Technologies. Recommendations for optimal professional communication have been developed that help you express your thoughts easily and beautifully, and conduct a dialogue in a relaxed and harmonious way.

A Study on Exercise Intervention for Improving Physical Activity for the Disabled: From the Perspective of Convergence Device (장애인 신체활동 증가를 위한 운동중재에 관한 연구: 융합형 디바이스 활용 관점에서)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend of exercise intervention applying various devices to increase the physical activity of the disabled, and to suggest the exercise intervention using converged devices that meet the needs of the times due to the increase of elderly people with disabilities. Exercise intervention using converged devices applicable to the disabled is divided into two types: first, exercise intervention using virtual reality-based gamification, and second, exercise intervention based on wearable devices of wearable or body-attached such as bands and watches. For exercise intervention using converged devices that can be enjoyed by the elderly with disability, minimize of environmental limitations, and easy to personalize, there is a need for configuration requirements such as easy operation and simple rules of operation, easy device installation and wearing, a trainer who can complement immature device utilization. In order to maintain and improve the daily living performance of the elderly with disabilities who experience a significant decrease in their cognitive and physical functions, it is necessary to use a physical activity game that can be experienced and can be interested in everyday life or a variety of devices to increase the amount of physical activity.

A Study on the Promotion of Adolescent's Milk Consumption (II) -Relationships of Adolescent's Milk Intake Frequency with Food Attitude, Snacking Frequency, Physical Activity and School Vending Facilities- (청소년의 우유섭취 증진방안 연구(II) -중.고등학생의 식태도, 간식빈도, 신체활동 및 교내판매시설과 우유 섭취 빈도와의 상관관계-)

  • In order to investigate the ecological factors affecting milk intake frequency of adolescents, the questionnaire survey was conducted with 929 middle and high school students living in Chungnam urban area through October and November 2004. The subjects consumed milk 8.6$\pm$6.7 times per week, other beverages 4.4$\pm$4.1 times per week and drinking water 3.7$\pm$2.1 cups per day. Of the students 77.3% took balanced meals, 72.8% ate regularly and 36.2% ate adequate amount. About 61% had breakfast everyday and nearly a half students snacked once a day. Nutritional knowledge scores about milk was 7.2$\pm$1.7 and milk attitude scores was 28.1$\pm$6.5. The subjects spent daily 1.8$\pm$1.1, 1.9$\pm$1.1, and 1.0$\pm$0.5 hours for computer use, TV watching and exercise, respectively. Milk intake frequencies were positively correlated with excercise, snack frequency, meal balance and regularity, breakfast frequency, food attitude score and milk preference, while showed negative correlationships with TV watching and computer use. Intake frequency of fruit-tasted and chocolate milk showed inverse correlation with nutritional knowledge. Subjects without either school store or vending machine took milk more frequently than those with one or both did. Of the correlated variables, milk preference was the most important influencing factor to milk intake frequency according to the stepwise linear regression analysis, which presented other 5 important influencing factors as food attitude, school vending facilities, excercise, snacking frequency and watching TV. In conclusion, the improvement of milk preference is the most important and effective way to promote milk consumption in adolescents. The favorite ways of drinking milk, nutritional benefit of milk, healthy beverage and good snacking should be taught in nutrition education. Also physical activities should be recommended to students rather than watching TV, computer use and vending facilities selling soft drinks should be limited to be established inside school.

A Study on the Blood Health Status and Nutrient Intake in Elderly Women Dwelling in Longevity Region in Jeonla Province according to Family Arrangement (전라도 장수지역에 거주하는 여자노인의 동거유형에 따른 생화학적 지표 및 영양섭취상태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the degree nutrient intake, health status and other characteristics of females aged 65 years and over in a longevity area according to family arrangement. For analysis, 585 female elderly were recruited from the Kugoksoondam area (Kurye, Goksung, Soonchang and Damyang counties), known as the longevity-belt region in Jeonla province, Korea. The subjects were categorized into three groups according to family arrangement (living alone, living with spouse only and living with family). Demographic characteristics were collected, as well as information on physical measurements, blood tests for biochemical indicators, health status and health-related life style, dietary behavior, favorite food groups, consumption frequency of food groups, nutrient intake and mini nutrition assessment. In the group living with their spouse only, the highest education, physical activity, diverse food intake, frequency of eating meats and fish, energy and nutrients intake, and score on the mininutrient status assessment (MNA) were found to be significantly favorable factors. Taken together, these results demonstrated that the group living with their spouse only had relatively superior nutrient intake and the quality of diet. In contrast, the group living alone showed the lowest self-rated economic status, diversity of food intake, and physical activity, with the highest frequency of drinking, smoking and regular exercise for almost everyday compared with the other groups. On the other hand, those living with family demonstrated the lowest intake of supplements or functional foods, and levels of hemoglobin hematocrit MCH, but the highest HBA1c and blood sugar. Therefore, the group living with family was assumed to be at risk of anemia and diabetes. These results could be useful to plan effective strategies to increase the health-life expectancy of Korean elderly people living in rural areas, according to family arrangement.
