We focus on discrete event systems with a structure of parallel processing, synchronization, and no-concurrency. We use max-plus algebra, which is an effective approach for controller design for this type of system, for modeling and formulation. Since a typical feature of this type of system is that the initial schedule is frequently changed due to unpredictable disturbances, we use a simple model and numerical examples to examine the possibility of applying the concepts of the feeding buffer and the project buffer of critical chain project management (CCPM) on max-plus linear discrete event systems in order to control the occurrence of an undesirable state change. The application of a CCPM-based framework on a max-plus linear discrete event system was proven to be effective.

To perform the engagement level simulation between the underwater vehicle model and the surface model those are constituted with various systems/ sub-systems, we implemented four different federates as a federation according to the IEEE 1516 HLA (High Level Architecture) protocol that is the international standard in the distributed simulation. Those are CFCS (Command and Fire Control System) federate, motion federate, external entities (torpedos, countermeasure and surfaceship) federate, and visualization federate that interacts with OSG (Open Scene Graph)-based visualization rendering module. In this paper, we present the detailed method about the model constitution for discrete event simulation in the distributed environment. For the sake of this purpose, we introduce the DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification)-HLA-based modeling method of the CFCS federate that reflects not only the interations between models, but also commands from user and tactics manager that is separated from the model. The CFCS federate makes decisions in various missions such as the normal diving, the barrier misision, the target motion analysis, the torpedo launch, and the torpedo evasion. In the perspective of DEVS modeling, the CFCS federate is the coupled model that has the tactical data process model, command model and fire control model as an atomic model. The message passing and time synchronization with other three federates are settled by the $m\ddot{a}k$ RTI (Runtime Infrastructure) that supports IEEE 1516. In this paper, we provides the detailed modeling method of the complicated model that has hierarchical relationship such as the CFCS system in the submarine and that satisfies both of DEVS modeling method for the discrete event simulation and HLA modeling method for the distributed simulation.

Workflow process mining is becoming a more and more valuable activity in workflow-supported enterprises, and through which it is possible to achieve the high levels of qualitative business goals in terms of improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the workflow-supported information systems, increasing their operational performances, reducing their completion times with minimizing redundancy times, and saving their managerial costs. One of the critical challenges in the workflow process mining activity is to devise a reasonable approach to discover and recognize the bottleneck points of workflow process models from their enactment event histories. We have intuitively realized the fact that the iterative process pattern of redo-activities ought to have the high possibility of becoming a bottleneck point of a workflow process model. Hence, we, in this paper, propose an algorithmic approach and its implementation to discover the redo-activities and their performers' involvements patterns from workflow process enactment event logs. Additionally, we carry out a series of experimental analyses by applying the implemented algorithm to four datasets of workflow process enactment event logs released from the BPI Challenges. Finally, those discovered redo-activities and their performers' involvements patterns are visualized in a graphical form of information control nets as well as a tabular form of the involvement percentages, respectively.
Abstract This paper proposes an event filtering technique that can dynamically control a large amount of event messages produced by moving objects like avatars or autonomous objects in a distributed virtual environment. The proposed multi-level grid model technique uses the method that extracts the representative events from the paths of moving objects. For dynamic control of message traffics, this technique digitizes the DOIs of the avatars and reflects the interest information controlling the frequency of message transmission. For the performance evaluation, a large number of moving objects were created and the model was applied to these avatar groups. In the experiments, more than 50% of messages have been reduced in comparison with the existing AOI-based filtering techniques. The proposed technique can dynamically control the QoS in proportion to the number of users and the amount of messages where a large number of users share a virtual space. This model can be applied to the development of 3D collaborative virtual societies and multi-user online games in the Internet.
The paper studies design of a decentralized supervisory controller with 2-level hierarchical structure for complex discrete event systems. Hierarchical structure with strict output-control-consistency(SOCC) gives a more abstract model for high-level control. The decentralized controller for a simple and abstract high-level system is designed more easily if the decentralized supervisory control problem in 2-level hierarchical structure systems(DSCP2) is solvable.
Advanced wireless network and sensor technologies are capable of collecting information such as temperature, humidity, weight, and location about objects at real time in logistics area. Besides, users want to be notified of contextual information about interest of objects whenever they want it and wherever they want it. To satisfy these requirements, applications should collect and analyze contextual information at real time, and must support a service that can notify it to wanted users. Event-based service is one of the way to satisfy these requirement of users. In this paper, we design an event notification system focused on location- and RFID-based logistics area. To do this, we present XML-based event expression model, ECA-based profile definition model, and an algorithm that has high scalability by distinguishing event filtering in two steps. Based on these designs, our implemented system can apply to not only logistics area but also intelligent traffic control system based on RFID or GPS devices.

A major objective of the study is to propose a supervisory control algorithm based on the discrete event dynamic system (DEDS) model and apply it to the automation of nuclear operations. The study is motivated by the suitability of the DEDS model for simulation of man-made control action and the potential of the DEDS based supervisory control algorithm for enhanced licensibility, when implemented in nuclear plants, through design transparency due to strong analytic backgrounds. The DEDS model can analytically show the robust stability of the proposed supervisory controller providing design transpareney for enhanced licensibility when implemented in nuclear operations.
Process mining is state-of-the-art technology in the workflow field. Recently, process mining becomes more important because of the fact that it shows the status of the actual behavior of the workflow model. However, as the process mining get focused and developed, the material of the process mining - workflow event log - also grows fast. Thus, the process mining algorithms cannot operate with some data because it is too large. To solve this problem, there should be a lightweight process mining algorithm, or the event log must be divided and processed partly. In this paper, we suggest a set of operations that control and edit XES based event logs for process mining. They are designed based on relational algebra, which is used in database management systems. We designed three operations for tailoring XES event logs. Select operation is an operation that gets specific attributes and excludes others. Thus, the output file has the same structure and contents of the original file, but each element has only the attributes user selected. Union operation makes two input XES files into one XES file. Two input files must be from the same process. As a result, the contents of the two files are integrated into one file. The final operation is a slice. It divides anXES file into several files by the number of traces. We will show the design methods and details below.
When the negative event is published, the company tends to go through the negative impact on the firm performance. Especially, with the SNS, the negative event is instantly spread on indefinite region so the impact seems bigger than the period before the SNS media appearance. It seems that everyone considers the SNS media impact on the firm performance quite big. However, there has been no empirical study on the impact comparison on the firm performance between pre and post SNS media occurrence periods. This study tries to empirically compare the impact of the negative event on the firm performance between pre and post SNS media appearance. Our study starts fromthe basic but not verified question; Does really the negative event have more negative impact in the post-SNS-occurrence period than in the pre-SNS-occurrence period? In order to examine the impact of the negative publicity on firm performance in two eras, pre and post SNS media appearance, we used CAR (Cumulative Abnormal Resturns) model. By using this model, we could verify the statistical significance of cumulative abnormal returns in market between before and after the events. For event samples, we focused on food manufacturers and collected the negative events from 1991 to 2003 for pre-SNS occurrence period, and from 2010 to 2013 for post-SNS occurrence period. Based on the listed food companies at KOSPI, we researched Naver News Library (newslibrary.naver.com) and Naver News (news.naver.com) for all the individual negative events published for both periods. Firm returns data were collected from TS 2000 (KOCO Info) and market portfolio data were collected from KRX Exchange. Through our empirical analysis, our finding is interesting to note that the type of events differently influences on the firm performance. With the SNS, the health-related events have influence on the firm performance 'after the event day' whereas the company behavior trust events have influence 'before the event day'. Our findings have implications for management. When a negative event directly related to or threatening customers or their life such as health, it is crucial to fix up the situation right after the event occurs. On the other hand, when a negative event is not publicly available information such as company behavior trust, it is important for marketers to strengthen the firms' trust reputation and control the bad WOM before the event.

PLC(programmable Logic Controller)s essential components of modern automation systems encompassing almost every industry. Ladder Diagrams (LD) have been widely used in the design of such PLC since the LD is suitable for the modeling of the sequential control system. However, the synthesis of LD itself mainly depends on the experience of the industrial engineer, which may results in unstructured or inflexible design. Hence, in this paper, we propose a ladder diagram conversion algorithm which systematically produces LDs for PLCs based on discrete event models to enhance the structured and flexible design mechanism.
