  • Extracorporeal shockwave therapy has been widely spread out showing an excellent efficacy compared to traditional medicinal treatments, interventional procedures or surgeries for diseases of tendons and musculoskeletal system. Major performance tests of extracorporeal shockwave therapy consist of pressure, energy flux, concentration, and effective amount of energy on the focus area of shockwave according to IEC 61846. Shockwave should be irradiated accurately to the lesion area to improve the performance of extracorporeal shockwave therapy, which makes it necessary to add the relevant section, IEC 60601-2-36 (12.1.101. Precision of Target Markers and Target Locations). International standards of extracorporeal shockwave therapy have been prepared based on European and western people. Thus, we need to conduct many studies on Korean patients to improve the quality of extracorporeal shockwave therapy and to develop the medical industry. In addition, the performance evaluation of extracorporeal shockwave therapy which has been prepared according to international standards should be additionally modified and supplemented corresponding to the Korean circumstances.

  • Since GNSS is easily affected by jamming and/or spoofing, alternative navigation systems can be operated as backup system to prepare for outage of GNSS. Alternative navigation systems are being researched over the world, and a multi-radio integrated navigation system using alternative navigation systems such as KNSS, eLoran, Loran-C, DME, VOR has been researched in Korea. Least Square or Kalman filter can be used to estimate navigation parameters in the navigation system. A large number of measurements of the Kalman filter may lead to heavy computational load. The decentralized Kalman filter and the federated Kalman filter were proposed to handle this problem. In this paper, the decentralized Kalman filter and the federated Kalman filter are designed for the multi-radio integrated navigation system and the performance evaluation result are presented. The decentralized Kalman filter and the federated Kalman filter consists of local filters and a master filter. The navigation parameter is estimated by local filters and master filter compensates navigation parameter from the local filters. Characteristics of three Kalman filters for a linear system and nonlinear system are investigated, and the performance evaluation results of the three Kalman filters for multi-radio integrated navigation system are compared.

  • This study presents a method for health monitoring of rotating objects for mobility based on multiple recursive least squares(RLS) algorithms. The performance degradation of the rotating objects causes low handing / low driving performances and even fatal accidents. Therefore, health monitoring algorithm of rotating objects is one of the important technologies for mobility fail-safe and maintenance areas. In order for health monitoring of rotating objects, four recursive least squares algorithms with forgetting factor were designed in this study. The health monitoring algorithm proposed in this study consists of two steps such as uncertainty estimation and parameter changes estimation. In order to improve estimation accuracy, time delay function was applied to the estimated signals based on the first order differential equation and forgetting factors used for the RLS were reasonably tuned. The health monitoring algorithm was constructed in Matlab/Simulink environment and simulation-based performance evaluation was conducted using DC motor model. The evaluation results showed that the proposed algorithm estimates the actual parameter differences reasonably using velocity and current information.

  • There have been many instances of damage to buildings with soft stories, and it is important to consider vertically irregular buildings when evaluating the seismic performance of existing buildings. However, because conventional methods do not easily reflect vertical irregularities with sufficient accuracy, it is possible to underestimate or overestimate the seismic performance of buildings with vertical irregularities. This study aims to develop a seismic performance evaluation method for vertically irregular buildings using the stiffness-based soft story ratio (SSR), which is a parameter that represents the ratio of the demand and the capacity for displacement and refers to the ratio of displacement concentration in buildings. The seismic performance evaluation method developed in this study is compared with the conventional seismic performance evaluation method for four piloti buildings, using the first-floor column as a variable. Conventional seismic performance evaluation methods often overestimate the seismic performance for models in which vertical irregularities are maximized. However, results of the proposed seismic performance evaluation method are identical to those from a detailed evaluation for all models. Therefore, it is considered that the proposed seismic performance evaluation method can provide more precise seismic performance evaluation results than conventional methods in the case of piloti buildings, where vertical irregularities are maximized.

  • In this paper, we address the problem of closely spaced source localization using sensor array processing. In particular, the performance efficiency (measured in terms of the root mean square error) of the unconditional maximum likelihood (UML) algorithm for estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of near-field sources is evaluated. Four parameters are considered in this evaluation: angular separation among sources, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), number of snapshots, and number of sources (multiple sources). Simulations are conducted to illustrate the UML performance to compute the DOA of sources in the near-field. Finally, results are also presented that compare the performance of the UML DOA estimator with the existing multiple signal classification approach. The results show the capability of the UML estimator for estimating the DOA when the angular separation is taken into account as a critical parameter. These results are consistent in both low SNR and multiple-source scenarios.

  • This paper deals with the performance evaluation of piezoelectric unimorph actuator. In the unimorph design, the thickness ratio of substrate to piezoelectric material and the elastic modulus ratio of substrate to piezoelectric material are important parameters. There exists only one structural configuration that satisfies the optimal condition among them, and actuators using that configuration exhibit better actuating displacements. Another design parameter is the piezoelectric coefficient which can be improved due to the induced tensile stress and voltages. The application of the tensile stress to the piezoelectric material makes it get higher piezoelectric coefficient and the total displacement performance of the unimorph actuator is improved. Finally, the piezoelectric actuator system with spring elements is fabricated and it shows higher actuating displacement capability.

  • Earth tube system can be installed in many ways. However, performance data on earth tube system is still insufficient. Therefore, in this study seven design parameters of earth tube systems were chosen such as underground earth tube length, depth, tube thermal conductivity, thickness, radius, soil conditions, and fan type. And the change effects in the values of the seven parameters on earth tube exit temperatures and heat transfer rate were examined through Energyplus simulations.

  • An experimental study to investigate the structural performance of reinforced concrete beams repaired by Polymer Cementitous Mortar in the tension zone is described. Preliminary trials with beams in which beams tensile reinforcing steel was exposed over 100%, 80% and 60% of their length have led to tests on $5\times25$cm beams over a 200cm span to examine the experimental parameter. Attention is concentrated upon overall bending capacity, deflection and crack development of repaired beams.

  • Networking for manufacturing is gaining importance as a nerve system of computer-integrated manufacturing(CIM). Among the various network types, the most inexpensive type called fieldbus is specifically aimed to interconnect simple devices such as sensors and actuators. For this purpose, there are several choices of the protocol such as Profibus, FIP, Foundation Fieldbus, and IEC/ISA fieldbus. This paper presents the simulation results of Profibus and FIP. Both protocols has been simulated in order to evaluate the performance such as transmission delay and throughput under different protocol parameter setting and traffic conditions.
