Recently, carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) composite materials have been widely used in various fields of engineering because of its advanced properties. Also, CFRP composite materials offer new design flexibilities, corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal conductivity and increased fatigue life. However CFRP composite materials are susceptible to impact damage due to their lack of through-thickness reinforcement and it causes large drops in the load-carrying capacity of a structure. Therefore, the impact damage behavior and subsequently load-carrying capacity of impacted composite materials deserve careful investigation. In this study, the residual strength and impact characteristics of plain-woven CFRP composites with impact damage are investigated under axial tensile test. By using obtained residual strength and Tan-Cheng failure criterion, residual strength of CFRP laminate with arbitrary fiber angle were evaluated.

External low-velocity impact loadings onto the composites cause reduction of stiffness and/or strength. The reductions indicate that internal(external) damages were developed within the composites. These damages could be matrix cracking, fiber/matrix debonding, or delamination between layers. In previous studies, damage evaluation have been done by applying secondary mechanical loading such as buckle-driven compressive, or fatigue, or flexural loadings. An evaluation method by applying indentation loadings on the composites was proposed. The load-displacement curves obtained from the indentation testing provided the extent of damages within the composites due to impact loadings.

Recently, specifications of flat display module is going to be higher definition, brightness and more wide viewing angle. On the other hand, physical thickness of those modules is forced to be slimmer and lighter. The flat display modules such as plasma or TFT-LCD employ thin crystallized panels that are normally weak to high level transient mechanical energy inputs. As a result, anti-shock performance is one of the most important design specifications of TFT-LCD modules. TFT-LCD module manufacturers and their customers like PC or TV makers perform a series of strict impact/drop test for the modules. However most of the large display module designs are generated based on engineer's own trial-error experiences. Those designs may result in disqualification from the drop/impact test during final product evaluation. A rigorous study on the impact failure of the displays is of course necessitated in order to avoid the problems. In this article, a systematic design evaluation is presented with combinations of FEM modeling and testing to support the optimal shock proof display design procedure.

The potential hazards resulting from a low-velocity impact (bird-strike, tool drop, runway debris, etc.) on aircraft structures, such as engine nacelle or a leading edges, has been a long-term concern to the aircraft industry. Certification authorities require that exposed aircraft components must be tested to prove their capability to withstand low-velocity impact without suffering critical damage. In most of the past research studies unloaded specimens have been used for impact tests, however, in reality it is much more likely that a composite structure is exposed to a certain stress state when it is being impacted, which can have a significant effect on the impact performance. And the radiated impact sound induced by impact is analyzed for the damage detection evaluation. In this study, an investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect in-plane loading on the impact force and sound of composite laminates numerically.
Chemical terrorism and accidents using chemicals are continuously occurring and attempted in and out of the country. In Korea, the National Institute of Chemical Safety affiliated with Ministry of Environment employs the CARIS(Ver. 2018) to assess the damage impact range for field-based response against chemical terrorism and accidents. However, the current version of CARIS can not consider the effects of closed space such as indoor and underground, so it is difficult to provide accurate evaluation results for damage impact range required for field response, on top of the limited information available. The limitations and directions for improvement were studied by comparing and reviewing the evaluation results of the damage impact range obtained by driving CARIS (Ver. 2018) and the domestic and foreign literature. Proposed improvements also included the direction of information provided to residents, including the need to build modeling for special points, such as underground, indoor, etc., and on-site response personnel. It is expected that through the continuous supplementation and correction of CARIS, chemical terrorism and accident response capability system will be advanced further.
In order to evaluate the structural integrity of a GFRP composite bogie frame due to flying railway ballast, the low velocity impact test and compressive test after impact was conducted for glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composites applied to skin part of a bogie frame. The impact test was performed using a instrumented impact testing system with energy levels of 5J, 10J and 20J and the designed impactor based on typical railway ballast shapes such as sphere, cube and cone to simulate the ballasted track environments. The compressive strength was tested to according to ASTM D7137 to evaluate the degradation of mechanical property of impact damaged laminate composites. The results showed that the damage area and the degradation of compressive strength after impact for laminate composites was increased with increase in impact energy for all ballast shapes and was particularly most influenced by cone ballast shape.
Fatigue evaluations for the rotor blades of commercial or military rotorcraft have been carried out using the safe life concept since 1950s. Particularly, in the case of a rotor blade made of a composite material, a highly reliable fatigue life could be predicted by evaluation the cumulative damage using combination of fatigue life curve and load spectrum. However, there is a limit in adequately evaluating the strength reducing phenomena caused by damages or defects generated during the manufacturing process or impact damage induced by operational usages, using only the safe life concept. In this study, the fatigue evaluation process based on the damage tolerance concept is described and illustrated by means of successful application to substantiate the retirement time of composite rotor blades.

This paper presents how to evaluate the transformer damage caused by reclosing scheme at the distribution substation. We describe a quantitative relationship between the reclosing scheme and the number of fault current flowing through transformer wsing the probability of a reclosing success/failure. The transformer damage from reclosing scheme is presented using a weight function and a damage function. A weight function is associated with the number of reclosing attempts and the reclosing deadtime to consider cumulative stress caused by reclosing scheme. A damage function is associated with a transformer impact ratio and a transformer functional life. In the case study, the transformer damage is simulated for the probability of a reclosing success. And the evaluation of transformer damage using KEPCO's operation data is performed.

To detect the damage in composite structure, nondestructive evaluation techniques are widely used. Tapping test is perhaps the most common technique used for the detection of damage in composite laminates. The method is accomplished by tapping the inspection area with light hammer-like device. The tapping test has the ability that indicates damages in a structure due to a localized change of stiffness. The change in vibration signature may be detected by measurement of the dynamic contact force during impact. In this study, it has been shown that the characteristics of impact force histories from a structure during tapping are changed by the presence of damage such as surface crack and delamination. And impact response analysis has been performed on composite rotor blade with crack to investigate the effect of damage.

In this paper, the analysis of impact damage behavior of a reinforced concrete structure that undergoes both a shock impulsive loading and an impact loading due to the air blast induced from an explosion is performed. Firstly, a pair of multiple loadings are selected from the scenario that an imaginary explosion accident is assumed. The RC structures strengthened with advanced composite materials (ACM) are considered as a scheme for retrofitting RC wall structures subjected to multiple explosive loadings and then the evaluation of the resistant performance against them is presented in comparison with the result of the evaluation of a RC structure without a retrofit. Also, in order to derive the result of the analysis similar to that of real explosion experiments, which require the vast investment and expense for facilities, the constitutive equation and the equation of state (EOS) which can describe the real impact and shock phenomena accurately are included with them. In addition, the numerical simulations of two concrete structures are achieved using AUTODYN-3D, an explicit analysis program, in order to prove the retrofit performance of a ACM-strengthened RC wall structure.
