  • This study was analyzed the long term performance of the demonstration system for solar energy desalination in Jeju. we used a solar thermal system as heat source of the single-stage fresh water generator with plate-type heat exchangers and a photovoltaic power system as electric source for hydraulic pumps. The demonstration system was designed and installed at Jeju-island in 2006. The system was comprised of the desalination unit with daily fresh water capacity designed as $2m^3$ a $120m^2$ evacuated tubular solar collector to supply the heat, a $6m^3$ heat storage tank, and a 5kW photovoltaic power generation to supply the electricity of hydraulic pumps for the heat medium fluids. Through the operation during about 3 years, In a clear day more than $400W/m^2$, the daily fresh water showed to produce more than about 500liter, and from January, 2007 to March, 2009 for 3 years, solar irradiance daily averaged was measured $370W/m^2$, the daily fresh water yield showed that can be produced about 330liter.

  • The performance enhancement of heat exchanger in the drying system using solar collector with evacuated tubes is analyzed. First, for this analysis, the heat loss from a reversed trapezoidal fin attached at the pipe is calculated as a function of convection characteristic number ratio, fin base length and fin tip length. Also, the optimum heat loss and fin tip length of the fin under certain conditions are presented. The overall surface effectiveness of the cylinder with reversed trapezoidal fins in the heat exchanger are shown as a function of half fin base height, fin lateral slope and fin tip length.

  • Heat pipes are considered to be promising candidates to enhance the heat transport capability of evacuated solar collectors in a wide temperature range. The working fluid must be selected properly considering various operating conditions of heat pipes for medium-high temperature range to avoid dry-out, local overheating, and frozen failure. The advantage of using binary mixture as heat pipe working fluid is that it can extend operating temperature range of the system as it can overcome operating temperature limit of a single fluid. Various operating temperature ranges were imposed in the experiments to simulate the actual operation of solar collectors using water-ethanol binary mixture. Tests were conducted for the coolant temperature range of -10$^{\circ}C$ to 120$^{\circ}C$, and mixing ratio range was from 0 to 1 based on mass fraction.

  • This study has been carried out to study the thermal performance of an all-glass type solar collector tube when a heat transfer medium is used with a heat storage unit capable of preventing pressure build-up within the tube. The heat storage unit is devised such that it performs the dual function of relieving excessive pressure and storing solar thermal energy. Different types of heat storage medium are tested under heat-up phase of a collector tube. It is found that the proposed unit could be used quite effectively if one wishes to capitalize more aggressively in harnessing the solar energy.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the operating performances of the evaporation desalination system with solar energy. This system was designed to use evacuated solar collector as the heat source, supplying the required heat energy and photovoltaic power as the electric source, supplying required power to pumps in the desalination system. The 5kW photovoltaic power generation system to make the electricity, the single-stage fresh water generator with plate heat exchanger, and remote control and monitoring system. Solar desalination system was designed and installed in Jeju-island, Korea in 2006, after about 4 years of operation, usability and stability of solar desalination system was guaranteed. The system comprises of the desalination unit which was designed to have daily fresh water capacity of $2m^3$, a $120m^2$ evacuated tubular solar collector to supply the heat, a $6m^3$ heat storage tank, and a 5.2kW photovoltaic power generation to supply the electricity to hydraulic pumps for the heat medium fluids. On a clear day, average daily solar irradiance in Jeju-island was measured to be $500W/m^2$ and the daily fresh water yield showed to be more than 500 liters under this condition. After around three years of a long term operation of the system from January 2007 to August 2009, average daily freshwater yield was analyzed to be around $330{\ell}$. The relationship equation between solar irradiance and freshwater yield was found to be y=1.1806x - 107.89.

  • The economics of a passive solar heating system (PSHS) with the pebble bed heat storage was evaluated, and the applications of the PSHS were analyzed, in this study. The results are as follows: The heating load, solar heat gain, and stored heat/year of the PSHS in the solar house model were found to be 10,778MJ, 3,438MJ, and 11,682MJ, respectively. The yearly energy expenses of the PSHS and the alternative heating system (conventional coal heating system, CCHS), which uses coal, were found to be USD 1.60/year and USD 60.90/year, respectively, and the yearly expenses of the PSHS were found to be 38 times less than those of the alternative heating system (CCHS). If it will be supposed that the life cycle of the passive solar heating system, according to the results of the LCC analysis in the two systems, is 40 years, the total expenses for the life cycle of the PSHS and the CCHS will be USD 1,431.50 and USD 2,740.00, respectively. The period for the investment payback of the PSHS is six years.

  • The thermal performances of glass evacuated tube solar collectors are numerically investigated. Four different shapes of solar collectors are considered and the performances of these solar collectors are numerically investigated. Dealing with only collecting tube, the effects of not only the shape of the absorber tube but also the incidence angle of solar irradiation on the thermal performance of the collector are studied because the energy obtained by the absorber can be varied according to the incidence angle of solar radiation. However, the solar irradiation consists of the beam radiation as well as the diffuse radiation. Also, in actual system, the interference of solar irradiation and heat transfer interaction between the tubes should be considered. Therefore, this study considered these effects is carried out experimentally and numerically. The accuracy of the numerical model is verified by experiments. The result shows that the thermal performance of the absorber used a plate fin and U-tube is about $25\%$ better than those of the other models.
