The purpose of this paper is to investigate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of tapered beams with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass of rotatory inertia at the other end. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. (omitted)
A boundary control method that controls interior state by actively controlling the boundary conditions in boundary value problems is proposed for the vibration control of flexible beam by using piezoelectric actuators. The governing equations are derived based on the Euler beam theory and the reduced order model is obtained by modal truncation. The spillover effects caused by the uncontrolled high frequency modes are analyzed and the method selecting a suitable sensor location is also proposed. The lag compensator in digital form is realized by using a microcomputer and its peripheral devices. The efficiency of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated experimentally and compared with the simulation results.

In this paper, a dynamic behavior of spring supported cantilever beam with a crack and a moving mass is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the equation of motion can be constructed by using the Lagrange's eauation. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments i.e. the crack is modelled as a rotational spring. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces across the crack section and is derived by applying fundamental fracture mechanics theory. And the crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture. As the depth of the crack is increased the tip displacement of the cantilever beam is increased.
An inverse approach is presented for calculating the flexibility coefficient of open-side cracks in the cross sectional of beams. The cracked cross section is treated as a massless rotational spring which connects two segments of the beam. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the differential equation governing the forced vibration of each segment of the beam is written. By using a mathematical manipulation the time dependent differential equations are transformed into the static substitutes. The crack characteristics are then introduced to the solution of the differential equations via the boundary conditions. By having the time history of transverse response of an arbitrary location along the beam, the flexibility coefficient of crack is calculated. The method is applied for some cracked beams with solid rectangular cross sections and the results obtained are compared with the available data in literature. The comparison indicates that the predictions of the proposed method are in good agreement with the reported data. The procedure is quite general so as to it can be applicable for both single-side crack and double-side crack analogously. Hence, it is also applied for some test beams with double-side cracks.

As analysis of the forced dynamic response and vibrational mode for the cantilevered beam is described. Experimental results are compared with the natural frequencies and vibrational modes for the cantilevered beam using the theory of Bernoulli-Euler and finite element method. We have found 1st and 2nd resonance frequency of the cantilevered beam by means of the various external frequencies, $1{\sim}70Hz$, using magnetic transducer. And we have studied the vibrational displacement at obtained resonance frequency of the cantilevered beam. The experimental results for the nodes of cantilevered beam were 0 in 1st mode and 0,0.786 in 2nd mode. close agreement between the theoretically predicted results and experimental result was obtained for the vibrational mode.
This paper presents the analytical solutions for the size-dependent static analysis of the functionally graded (FG) beams with various boundary conditions based on the nonlocal continuum model. The nonlocal behavior is described by the differential constitutive model of Eringen, which enables to this model to become effective in the analysis and design of nanostructures. The elastic modulus of beam is assumed to vary through the thickness or longitudinal directions according to the power law. The governing equations are derived by using the nonlocal continuum theory incorporated with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The explicit solutions are derived for the static behavior of the transversely or axially FG beams with various boundary conditions. The verification of the model is obtained by comparing the current results with previously published works and a good agreement is observed. Numerical results are presented to show the significance of the nonlocal effect, the material distribution profile, the boundary conditions, and the length of beams on the bending behavior of nonlocal FG beams.
A Closed-form solution for dynamic response of a functionally graded (FG) nonlocal nanobeam due to action of moving harmonic load is presented in this paper. Due to analyzing in small scale, a nonlocal elasticity theory is utilized. The governing equation and boundary conditions are derived based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and Hamilton's principle. The material properties vary through the thickness direction. The harmonic moving load is modeled by Delta function and the FG nanobeam is simply supported. Using the Laplace transform the dynamic response is obtained. The effect of important parameters such as excitation frequency, the velocity of the moving load, the power index law of FG material and the nonlocal parameter is analyzed. To validate, the results were compared with previous literature, which showed an excellent agreement.

In this paper, beam finite elements with higher-order derivatives' continuity are formulated and evaluated for various boundary conditions. All the beam elements are based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. These higher-order beam elements are often required to analyze structures by using newly developed higher-order beam theories and/or non-classical beam theories based on nonlocal elasticity. It is however rare to assess the performance of such elements in terms of boundary and loading conditions. To this end, two higher-order beam elements are formulated, in which $C^2$ and $C^3$ continuities of the deflection are enforced, respectively. Three different boundary conditions are then applied to solve beam structures, such as cantilever, simply-support and clamped-hinge conditions. In addition to conventional Euler-Bernoulli beam boundary conditions, the effect of higher-order boundary conditions is investigated. Depending on the boundary conditions, the oscillatory behavior of deflections is observed. Especially the geometric boundary conditions are problematic, which trigger unstable solutions when higher-order deflections are prescribed. It is expected that the results obtained herein serve as a guideline for higher-order derivatives' continuous finite elements.
An analytical method has been developed to estimate the dynamic contact force between wheel and rail when trains are running on rail with vertical irregularities. In this method, the effect of Hertzian deformation at the contact point is considered as a linearized spring and the wheel is considered as an sprung mass. The rail is modelled as a discretely-supported Timoshenko beam, and the periodic structure theory was adopted to obtain the driving-point receptance. As an example, the dynamic contact force for a typical wheel/rail system was analysed by the method developed in this research and the dynamic characteristics of the system was also discussed. It is revealed that discretely-supported Timoshenko beam model should be used instead of the previously used continuously-supported model or discretelysupported Euler beam model, for the frequency range above several hundred hertz.
Gradient elastic flexural beams are dynamically analysed by analytic means. The governing equation of flexural beam motion is obtained by combining the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and the simple gradient elasticity theory due to Aifantis. All possible boundary conditions (classical and non-classical or gradient type) are obtained with the aid of a variational statement. A wave propagation analysis reveals the existence of wave dispersion in gradient elastic beams. Free vibrations of gradient elastic beams are analysed and natural frequencies and modal shapes are obtained. Forced vibrations of these beams are also analysed with the aid of the Laplace transform with respect to time and their response to loads with any time variation is obtained. Numerical examples are presented for both free and forced vibrations of a simply supported and a cantilever beam, respectively, in order to assess the gradient effect on the natural frequencies, modal shapes and beam response.
