This paper investigates the impact of ethanol mandate on the price relationship between corn and beef using the monthly time-series data from January 2003 through December 2013. In addition, we examine the non-linearity in ethanol, corn, and beef markets. Based on the threshold cointegration test, we find the symmetric relationship in pairs with ethanol production-corn price and ethanol production-beef price whereas there is the asymmetric relationship between prices of corn and beef. Employing the threshold vector error correction and vector error correction models, we also find that the corn price in the U.S is caused by both ethanol production and beef price in a long-run when the beef price is relatively high. On the other hand, the corn price does not cause both ethanol production and beef price in the long run. Findings from this study imply that demanders for corn such as ethanol and beef producers have price leadership on corn producers.
The effects of ethanol on corticostriatal synaptic transmission were examined, using extracellular recording and analysis of population spike amplitudes in rat brain slices, to study how acute ethanol intoxication impairs striatal function. Ethanol caused a decrease in population spike amplitudes in a dose dependent manner ($50{\sim}200mM$). Pretreatment with picrotoxin, a ${\gamma}-amino$ butyric acid $(GABA)_{A}$ receptor antagonist, increased the population spikes but ethanol (100 mM) was still effective in decreasing the population spikes under this condition. In the presence of $_{(DL)}-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric$ acid (APV), N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, the inhibitory action of ethanol on population spikes was not shown. These results suggest that ethanol inhibits the glutamatergic corticostriatal synaptic transmission through blockade of NMDA receptors.
The optimal condition of the ethanol fermentation from raw cassava starch by simultaneous saccharification - fermentation (SSF) was studied using glucoamylase from Aspergillus sp. and a yeast strain. The rate and yield of ethanol production were optimum at pH 3.6 with shaking. The fine milling treatment was effective for both saccharification and SSF of raw cassava starch. The presaccharification at 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr before SSF increased the rate and yield of ethanol production, as well. To increase the ethanol concentration after fermentation the substrate concentration could be increased up to 2195 without the problem of viscosity. The use of high concentration ethanol tolerant yeast strains and high substrate concentration produced ethanol higher than 10%(W/V) after fermentation for 5 days.
The present study was undertaken to determine whether ethanol influences on the agonist-induced vascular smooth muscle contraction and, if so, to investigate the related mechanism. The measurement of isometric contractions using a computerized data acquisition system was combined with molecular experiments. Ethanol significantly inhibited thromboxane $A_2$ mimetic-induced contraction with intact endothelial function, but there was no relaxation on thromboxane $A_2$ mimetic U-46619-induced contraction irrespective of endothelium suggesting that the pathway such as Rho-kinase activation, $Ca^{2+}$ entry or thin filament regulation was not affected. In addition, ethanol didn't decrease thromboxane $A_2$ mimetic-induced increase of phospho-myosin phosphatase targeting subunit protein 1 (pMYPT1) or pERK1/2. Interestingly, ethanol didn't inhibit significantly phorbol ester-induced contraction in denuded muscles suggesting that thin filament regulation is less important on the ethanol-induced regulation in the muscle than endothelial NO synthesis. In conclusion, this study provides the evidence and possible related mechanism concerning the effect of ethanol on the agonist-dependent contraction in rat aortic rings with regard to endothelial function.
In this study, the effectof ethanol and acetaldehyde on DNA binding activities of NF-$textsc{k}$B and AP-1 were evaluated in C6 rat glial cells. Both NF-$textsc{k}$B and AP-1 are important transcription factors for the expression of various cytokines in glial cells. Our data showed that neither ethanol nor acetaldehyde induced conspicuous cell death of C6 cells at clinically realistic concentrations. When the DNA binding activities of nuclear NF-$textsc{k}$B and AP-1 were estimated using electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), ethanol(0.3%) or acetaldehyde(1mM) induced transient activation of these transcription factors, which attained peak levels at 4~8 hours and declined to basal levels at 12 hours after treatement . The supershift analysis showed that the increased activities of NF-$textsc{k}$B in ethanol/acetaldehyde-treated C6 cells were due to the preferential induction of p65/p50 heterodimer complex. The DNA binding activities of these transcriptional factors decreased below basal levels when cells were cultured with either ethanol or acetaldehyde for 24 hours, and showed the inhibitory effect of chronic ehtanol /acetaldehyde treatment on the activities of these transsriptional factors. Our data indicate that either ethanol or acetaldehyde can induce functional changes of glial cells throught bi-directional modulation of NF-$textsc{k}$B and AP-1 DNA binding activities.

A difference in ethanol metabolism between premature and young adult rats was examined. Female SD rats, either 4wk or 12wk old, were injected with a single dose of ethanol (1.5g /kg) through jugular vein and the blood ethanol level was monitored for 300 min using a gas chromatographic method. Reduction of blood ethanol level per unit of time was less and the area under the blood concentration-time curve (AUC) was significantly greater in young adults compared to premature rats. Activity of hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase was not influenced by the age increase. Total cytochrome P-450, cytochrome $b_5$. or aminopyrine N-demethylation was not different between premature rats and young adult rats. However, p-nitrophenol hydroxylation and p-nitroanisole O-demethylation activities were significantly higher in premature rats. The relative liver weight was 45% greater in premature rats leading to an overall increase in ethanol metabolizing activity in these animals. The results indicate that the reduction in ethanol elimination in young adult rats appears to be mostly associated with the decrease in relative liver weight as the age of animals increases.
Alcoholic liver disease (ALD), which encompasses alcoholic steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis, and alcoholic cirrhosis, is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although the economic and health impacts of ALD are clear, few advances have been made in its prevention or treatment. We recently demonstrated that the insect-derived antimicrobial peptide CopA3 exerts anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory activities in various cell systems, including neuronal cells and colonic epithelial cells. Here, we tested whether CopA3 inhibits ethanol-induced liver injury in mice. Mice were intraperitoneally injected with ethanol only or ethanol plus CopA3 for 24 h and then liver injury and inflammatory responses were measured. Ethanol enhanced the production of proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, interferon (IFN)-γ, and IL-10. It also induced hepatocyte apoptosis and ballooning degeneration in hepatocytes. Notably, all these effects were eliminated or significantly reduced by CopA3 treatment. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that CopA3 ameliorates ethanol-induced liver cell damage and inflammation, suggesting the therapeutic potential of CopA3 for treating ethanol-induced liver injury.
In this study, a fluorescent ethanol sensor is developed to determine the ethanol concentration in the liquid phase. The sensor is developed using a complex of resazurin (RA)/resorufin (RO) and a hydrotalcite (HT) catalyst in a sol-gel matrix of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) to produce a fluorescent ethanol-sensing membrane (RA/RO*HT membrane). The operation mechanism of the RA/RO*HT membrane is based on (i) the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde and (ii) the reduction of RA to RO, through electron flows followed by EtOH ↔ HT ↔ RA/RO ↔ EtOH interactions. These possible redox reactions can lead to an increased fluorescence intensity of the RA/RO*HT membrane as the ethanol concentration increases. The RA/RO*HT membrane shows a linear detection range of 1-20 vol.% EtOH with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.178%. Additionally, the RA/RO*HT membrane has high sensitivity and accuracy for determining the alcohol content in several Korean alcoholic beverages.

Lean combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a ethanol fueled spark-ignited engine according to ethanol-gasoline fuel blending ratio were investigated. The test engine was $1591cm^3$ and 10.5 of compression ratio SI engine with 4 cylinders. In addition, lambda sensor system was connected with universal ECU to control the lambda value which is varied from 1.0 to 1.5. The engine performance and lean combustion characteristics such as brake torque, cylinder pressure and rate of heat release were investigated according to ethanol-gasoline fuel blending ratio. Furthermore, the exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) were measured by emission analyzers. The results showed that the brake torque, cylinder pressure and the stability of engine operation were increased as ethanol blending ratio is increased. Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was increased in higher ethanol blending ratio while brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) was decreased in higher ethanol blending ratio. The exhaust emissions were decreased as ethanol blending ratio is increased under overall experimental conditions, however, some specific exhaust emission characteristics were mainly influenced by lambda value and ethanol-gasoline fuel blending ratio.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare 1% chlorhexidine-gluconate/61% ethanol (CHG/Ethanol) emollient and 7.5% povidone-iodine (PVI) scrub for antimicrobial, residual effect, and skin condition. Method: CHG/Ethanol emollient hand hygiene was performed waterless, and brushless by operating doctors and nurses (N=20). PVI hand washing was performed with water and a brush (N=20) for 5 min. The subjects were asked to press their left hand in hand-shaped agar before a surgical scrub, immediately after a surgical scrub and after the operation. The amount of isolated microorganisms were calculated by counting the number of divided areas($1{\times}1cm$, 160 cell) which were culture positive in the hand culture plate. The skin condition was evaluated. Result: The antimicrobial count of CHG/Ethanol emollient and PVI immediately post surgical scrub was 0.0 vs. 4.1 (p>.05), and after the operation was 0.1 vs. 37.8 (p>.05)respectively. The Residual effect of CHG/Ethanol emollient immediately post surgical scrub and after the operation were 0.0 vs. 0.1 (p>.05), and PVI were 4.1 vs. 37.8 (p>.05)respectively. The skin condition and satisfaction of CHG/Ethanol emollient was higher than PVI (p<.05). Conclusion: The antimicrobial effect between CHG/Ethanol emollient and PVI were the same. Considering skin condition, satisfaction and allergic reaction CHG/Ethanol emollient for surgical scrub is recommended in Korea.
