  • The remaining range between missile and target can be used to calculate the guidance command as well as to determine the explosion time of the warhead. Since the range, however, is not directly measured by on-board sensors of the missile, it is usually estimated by filter-based techniques using angle-only measurements. Conventional filter-based techniques are complex and require huge computation. In this paper, we propose a range estimation algorithm based on the geometrical triangulation principle for two points of missiles and a target. The proposed algorithm has a simple structure but the accuracy is largely dependent on the measurement errors. To improve the accuracy of estimation, Digital Fading Memory Filter (DFMF) is applied. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed through numerical simulations.

  • The QoS guarantee for the forward link in satellite communication networks is very important because there are a variety of packets with multiplexing. Especially, the packets are processed depending on the available bandwidth in satellite network changing the wireless channel state in accordance with weather condition. The DVB-S2 increases the transmission efficiency by applying the adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) techniques as a countermeasure of rain attenuations. However, the channel estimation algorithm is required to support the ACM techniques that select the MODCOD values depending on the feedback data transmitted by RCSTs(Return Channel via Satellite Terminal) because satellite communication networks have a long propagation delay. In this paper, we proposed the channel estimation algorithm using rain attenuation values and reference data and the packet scheduling scheme to support the QoS and fairness. As a result of performance evaluation, we showed that proposed algorithm exactly predicts the channel conditions and supports bandwidth fairness to the individual RCST and guarantees QoS for user traffics.

  • Containing an Angle-of-Arrival(: AOA) estimation and interference suppression techniques, an adaptive beamformer is one of core techniques for the Signal Intelligence(: SIGINT) which collect various intelligence utilizing cutting edge devices including the radar and satellite. It generates a beam with the directivity in a corresponding direction, to efficiently receive a signal from the specific direction, using antenna array. In this paper, we present the received signal model including interference signals and noise, which can be applied to an input of the signal intelligence satellite system equipped with the AOA estimation and the interference cancellation techniques, and analysis the characteristics of various signals, which can be included in the proposed received signal model. This proposed signal model can be directly applied to the performance evaluation for a variety of beamforming techniques. Also, we verify the spectrum characteristic of the presented received signal model in the frequency domain through computer simulation examples.

  • The Ministry of Environment has measured streamflow at eight-day intervals for the estimation of standard flow of the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) system. This study identified the availability of the partially measured the eight-day interval data for estimating standard flow and found the optimal extension techniques of standard flow. The study area was selected for the Nakbon-A watershed in the Nakdong River, and four streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow were considered: extension, percentile, drainagearea, and regional regression methods. The flow duration curve (FDC) using the eight-day interval streamflow data indicated very high Nash and Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) values above 90 % from FDC-II to FDC-VII compared to FDC-VIII, the standard FDC. This result demonstrates that FDC using daily data of three-six cumulative years could represent standard FDC fairly well. For the streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow, the percentile method was selected as the optimal alternative, showing the minimal difference from FDC-VIII. These results validate the availability of the eight-day interval streamflow data in the standard flow estimation and the application of extension techniques. It seems that these results could reduce the uncertainty of partially measured streamflow data for water quantity and quality management.

  • There are several researches on 2D gaze tracking techniques for the 2D screen for the Human-Computer Interaction. However, the researches for the gaze-based interaction to the stereo images or contents are not reported. The 3D display techniques are emerging now for the reality service. Moreover, the 3D interaction techniques are much more needed in the 3D contents service environments. This paper addresses gaze-based 3D interaction techniques on stereo display, such as parallax barrier or lenticular stereo display. This paper presents our researches on 3D gaze estimation and gaze-based interaction to stereo display.

  • The purpose of this project is the derivation and development of techniques for the new estimation of robustness for the systems having uncertainties. The basic ideas to analyze the system which is the originally nonlinear is Lyapunov direct theorems. The nonlinear systems have various forms of terms inside the system equations and this investigation is confined in the form of bounded uncertainties. Bounded means the uncertainties are with same positive/negative range. The number of uncertainties will be the degree of freedoms in the calculation of the stability region. This is so called the robustness bounds. This proposition adopts the theoretical analysis of the Lyapunov direct methods, that is, the sign properties of the Lyapunov function derivative integrated along finite intervals of time, in place of the original method of the sign properties of the time derivative of the Lyapunov function itself. This is the new sufficient criteria to relax the stability condition and is used to generate techniques for the robust design of control systems with structured perturbations. Using this relaxing stability conditions, the selection of Lyapunov candidate function is of various forms. In this paper, the quadratic form is selected. this generated techniques has been demonstrated by recent research interest in the area of robust control design and confirms that estimation of robustness bounds will be improved upon those obtained by results of the original Lyapunov method. In this paper, the symbolic algebraic procedures are utilized and the calculating errors are reduced in the numerical procedures. The application of numerical procedures can prove the improvements in estimations of robustness for one-and more structured perturbations. The applicable systems is assumed to be linear with time-varying with nonlinear bounded perturbations. This new techniques will be extended to other nonlinear systems with various forms of uncertainties, especially in the nonlinear case of the unstructured perturbations and also with various control method.

  • In an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing) system, the sampling frequency offset between the transmitter and receiver is known to cause the interchannel interference (ICI), resulting in performance degradation. In this paper, we propose two time-domain techniques to estimate the sampling frequency offset, especially for a high data-rate OFDM system. The first technique estimates the sampling frequency offset by using the phase difference between two received samples with a fixed amount of time interval, corresponding to the transmitted training symbol, under the assumption of perfect symbol and carrier offset synchronization. The second technique estimates the sampling frequency offset and carrier frequency offset jointly, when the two offsets exist together, by using two training symbols with different frequency components and using a sample algebraic calculation. The proposed estimation techniques for sampling frequency offset cause no time delay due to all time-domain processing, and have a good performance due to no ICI effect. The performances of the proposed techniques are demonstrated by various simulations.

  • FRUC(Frame Rate Up Conversion) is core techniques for higher quality terminals or low channel rate. For these applications, in this paper, we propose a block-based reliability evaluation method for FRUC techniques using bi-lateral symmetrical motion estimation. First, in order to measure the reliability, by introducing cost evaluation tools such as motion vector consistency as well as temporal matching and spatial matching characteristics and then by combining these tools, we propose an efficient method which arrange the blocks according to distortion size. Through several simulations, it is shown that the proposed method is very effective in finding the high distortion blocks. Furthermore, it is expected that the proposed method can be effectively utilized in FRUC techniques and Distributed Video Coding technologies.

  • Various techniques including histograms, sampling and parametric techniques have been proposed to estimate query result sizes for the query optimization. Histogram-based techniques are the most widely used form for the selectivity estimation in relational database systems. However, in the spatio-temporal databases for the moving objects, the continual changes of the data distribution suffer the direct utilization of the state of the art histogram techniques. Specifically for the future queries, we need another methodology that considers the updated information and keeps the accuracy of the result. In this paper we propose a novel approach based upon the duality and the marginal distribution to construct a histogram with very little time since the spatio-temporal histogram requires the data distribution defined by query predicates. We use data synopsis method in the dual space to construct spatio-temporal histograms. Our method is robust to changing data distributions during a certain period of time while the objects keep the linear movements. An additional feature of our approach supports the dynamic update incrementally and maintains the accuracy of the estimated result.

  • Existing studies on radar rainfall uncertainties were performed to reduce the uncertainty for each stage by using bias correction during the quantitative radar rainfall estimation process. However, the studies do not provide quantitative comparison with the uncertainties for all stages. Consequently, this study proposes a suitable approach that can quantify the uncertainties at each stage of the quantitative radar rainfall estimation process. First, the new approach can present initial and final uncertainties, increasing or decreasing the uncertainty, and the uncertainty percentage at each stage. Furthermore, Maximum Entropy (ME) was applied to quantify the uncertainty in the entire process. Second, for the uncertainty quantification of radar rainfall estimation at each stage, this study used two quality control algorithms, two rainfall estimation relations, and two bias correction techniques as post-processing and progressed through all stages of the radar rainfall estimation. For the proposed approach, the final uncertainty (ME = 3.81) from the ME of the bias correction stage was the smallest while the uncertainty of the rainfall estimation stage was higher because of the use of an unsuitable relation. Additionally, the ME of the quality control was at 4.28 (112.34%), while that of the rainfall estimation was at 4.53 (118.90%), and that of the bias correction at 3.81 (100%). However, this study also determined that selecting the appropriate method for each stage would gradually reduce the uncertainty at each stage. Finally, the uncertainty due to natural variability was 93.70% of the final uncertainty. Thus, the results indicate that this new approach can contribute significantly to the field of uncertainty estimation and help with estimating more accurate radar rainfall.
