In this systematic review on bone reduction procedures for the correction of the prominent mandibular angle, we collected and sorted the methods. The strength and weakness, indication, complication, and final esthetic result of each method were evaluated. After searching and filtering the literatures on the base of inclusion criteria, 9 eligible case series studies were included in this study. There were 3 types of curved ostectomies and 4 types of lateral cortical ostectomies. Surgical procedures for curved ostectomies were divided into 2 types. One was single curved ostectomy and the other was multistaged curved ostectomy. Lateral cortical ostectomies reported were all similar to sagittal split ramus osteotomy. The complications reported in the included studies were scarce, but curved ostectomies may be able to induce many complications. The prominent mandibular angle must be analyzed in the lateral dimension and frontal dimension, and curved ostectomy can reduce the mandibular angle laterally while lateral cortical ostectomy can reduce the bigonial distance frontally. Because curved ostectomies can induce complications and unnaturally large mandibular angle while can not reduce bigonial distance efficiently, the current trend for the angle reduction procedure is lateral cortical ostectomies.
Tooth is the most important element in esthetic consideration on facial area. Tooth alignment which is in harmony with gingiva, lips, and face is also key element. The purpose of this study was to give a clinical discipline for restoration of gingival contour, which contains a ratio of maxillary 6 anterior teeth, research for gingival contour etc., in case of rehabilitation of maxillary anterior teeth. 300 Dankook university dental school students ,who is their twenties and free from periodontitis, participate in this study. The result was from each 70 males and females who had normal occlusion and tooth alignment. Length, width and length/width ratio of maxillary 6 anterior teeth were 0.74-0.81 in male, 0.81-0.84 in female. There was significant difference between male and female. The most deepest position of gingiva in maxillary central incisor and canine was located in distal part of teeth and maxillary lateral incisor was middle portion. In maxillary central incisors, gingival line of the most deepest point appeared significant difference between male and female (p<0.01) whereas there was no difference in lateral incisors and canines. Distance between interdental papilla apex and the most deepest portion appeared significant difference between male and female. Distance of the deepest position of gingiva is statistically significant except maxillary central incisors and lateral incisors. Standard deviation and mean of the width of labio-lingual were measured in cervical area and there was a significant difference both male and female.(p<0.01) From this result, we could get the mean of maxillary anterior gingival line and these results have great value in clinical guidance in studying maxillary anterior teeth.

Background: The fundamental responsibility of an anesthesiologist is to maintain adequate gas exchange. Failure to maintain a patent airway can result in brain damage or death. Generally, in patients with mandibular prognathism, who have the protruded mandible, the mask ventilation was thought to be not easy. The purpose of this study was to observe the degree of the difficulty of airway management in mandibular prognathism using some anatomic criteria for defining and grading difficulty of airway and difficulty of endotracheal intubation with direct laryngoscope. Methods: The observations and measurements are done to the 54 patients with mandibular prognathism, who were scheduled for corrective esthetic surgery. The case study is done to the 30 patients with normal mandible for control group. In all patients, mouth opening distance (MOD), mouse opening angle (MOA), mandibular length (ML), mandibular depth (MD), thyromental distance (TMD), thyromental area (TMA), Mallampati grades, and Cormack and Lehane grades are measured. T-test and Chi-square test are done (P < 0.05). Results: In the mandibular prognathism cases, the measurements of MD, TMD and TMA are more greater than those of controls (P < 0.05). Mallampati grades with tongue thrust are higher in the female mandibular prognathism cases than those of female controls. Most of the grades of the mandibular prognathism cases with Cormack and Lehane grading system are I or II being easy intubation cases (P < 0.05) Conclusions: In the patients of mandibular prognathism, the intubation with laryngoscope will be easer than that of normal mandible in general. It is for that their laryngeal aperture can be easily visible when the laryngoscope are used.
A mucogingival grafting procedure has been developed to cover denuded root surface. The subepithelial connective tissue graft technique is very predictable and allows for a good esthetic results and minimum patient discomfort on the palate. However, in areas where there is a lack of vestibular depth and keratinized attached tissue, the presence of frena or heavy muscle attachment, covering the connective tissue graft with a mucosal flap is very difficult. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an alternative technique of root coverage using the free connective tissue graft. The results were as follows: 1. Probing depths didn't seem to vary significantly from the preoperative to postoperative period. 2. The amount of keratinized tissue showed an increase of $5.9{\pm}0.97mm$ from the preoperative level. 3. Total clinical exposed root coverage increase 72.2% compare with preoperative level. 4. The shrinkage from gingival margin is $4.2{\pm}1.15mm$ and the mean shrinkage rate is 40.1%. 5. The depth of the vestibule increased with the average distance from cementoenamel junction to mucogingival junction being $7.4{\pm}1.65mm$.
Objectives : This study is purposed to segment dental service markets with reflecting customer's preference and to suggest some marketing strategies applied to each segmented market. Methods : The customer's data collected from a series of online survey comprise such factors as expertise of dentist, courtesy, clinic size, equipment, price and distance, including some socio-demographics. A conjoint analysis and a clustering analysis with estimated coefficients were performed to find out some dental market segments for three dental service types such as dental caries, esthetic treatments and dental implants. Results : Three or four market segments for each dental service type are derived from the analysis, and subsequently market characteristics for each derived segment are explored. Furthermore, some dental marketing strategies for each segment are suggested for better management. Conclusion : A conventional way of developing dental marketing strategies can be improved, while specific customer's preference are responded.
In-Ceram system is one of contemporary esthetic all ceramic restorations and has relatively high flexural strength. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal fidelity according to type of resin cement and measuring position, and to evaluate fracture strength according to type of resin cement. In this study, twenty seven In-Ceram crowns were fabricated on the metal master die of prepared maxillary right central incisor and devided into three groups. All specimens were cemented with Panavia 21 (group PV), Super-bond (group SB) and Lute-it (group LI) on the metal master die. After cementation, specimens were measured marginal gap between the margin of the In-Ceram crown and the finishing line of metal master die by using a stereomicroscope (SZ-ST, Olympus, Japan). Marginal gaps were recorded at the labial, lingual, mesial and distal measuring points on the metal master die. For the mesurement of fracture strength, lingual surfaces of cemented specimens were loaded at a distance of 1mm from incisal edge by using the Autograph S-2000 (Shimadzu, Japan). The results of marginal fidelity and fracture strength were statistically analyzed with the SPSS version 8.0 programs. The results of this study were as follows: 1. In comparison of marginal fidelity according to the measuring points, there was no significant difference. 2. The marginal fidelity according to the type of resin cement was decreased in order of group $LI\;(63.75{\mu}m),\;SB\;(77.78{\mu}m),\;PV\;(86.53{\mu}m)$, and there was significant difference between group LI and PV (p<0.05). 3. The fracture strength according to the type of resin cement was showed descending order of group $LI\;(60.00kg/cm^2),\;SB\;(56.80kg/cm^2),\;PV\;(56.11kg/m^2)$, but there was no significant difference.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the present conditions of illumination techniques in dental clinics in order to contribute improvement of operating environment. This study also aimed exploring qualitative and quantitative luminous intensity required for color temperature in dental clinic illumination, which was a critical part of esthetic dentistry. Materials and methods: A total of forty-eight local dental clinics were selected for sampling a) luminous intensity, and b) color temperature. The author measured the luminous intensity and the color temperature with lux meter and color meter respectively between 12pm and 2pm. The dental unit chair placed in the general operation positions were kept the distance 60 cm then all dental units were measured three times and averaged. The author measured the luminous intensity and color temperature with both common dental operating light and then without operating light in different office environments. The study was conducted under three conditions: 1 artificial illumination in clear day light 2. artificial illumination in cloudy day light, and 3. artificial illumination alone. Results : The results obtained were as follows. 1. The average luminous intensity in dental clinic lighting was 425 lux which was not sufficient to produce the optimal shade of the patient's teeth. Furthermore, the average luminous intensity even in full operating lighting was 9532 lux which fell short of the required level of 10,000 lux. 2. The average color temperature of all dental clinics surveyed was 5169 K which met the optimal range. However, only 33.3% fell in the correct region between 5,000-5,500 K as 25% were over 5,500 K and 41.6% were below 5,000 K. As a result, 66.7% were under insufficient color temperature conditions. 3. The dental unit chair placed next to a window, hence exposure to natural lighting, had significantly higher luminous intensity and color temperature compared to the dental unit chair which didn't have a window or natural lighting. 4. The data analysis revealed that only 6.3% of the dental clinic were met the standard of the average luminous intensity and color temperature.

This study was performed to establish the cephalometric standards and to compare measurement of Korean children in the Field I, II, III, IV, V, VI to Japanese and Caucasians by the Ricketts' analysis. Lateral cephalograms of 24 males and 27 females with normal occlusion and acceptable profile 9 years of age were obtained and statistically analyzed. 1. Norms of Korean males, females and both sexes at 9 years old were established. 2. Significant differences between male and female exist in incisor overjet, maxillary incisor protrusion, mandibular incisor inclination, cranial deflection, corpus length. Maxillary incisor of male was more protrude and overjet was larger than female 3. Korean was similar to Japanese but different from Caucasian. Compare with facial axis and facial depth, chin was retruded dolichofacial pattern and due to large mandibular plane angle and small corpus length, mandibular plane was inclined and mandible body was short. Compare with porion location, ramus position and posterior facial height, ramus was long and located posterior. Compare with maxillary depth and maxillary height, maxilla was located posterior and inferior. The distance between the upper molar and PTV was short, the amount of distalization is limited. Maxillary and mandibular incisor were more protruded and also lower lip was more protruded to esthetic line 4. In comparison between 9 and 11 years old, growth changes of facial depth, mandibular plane angle, corpus length and upper molar position were larger than that of Japanese and Caucasians.

Loss of molar support and abnormal jaw relationship lead to occlusal disharmony and cause pathologic signs. Full mouth rehabilitations with reestablishment of occlusal schemes are needed. In this case, the 75 year-old female patient showed posterior bite collapse, irregular occlusal plane and Class II jaw relationship. By observing her profile and interocclusal distance, she was diagnosed as loss of occlusal vertical dimension. Treatment plan is to restore maxillay class I removable partial denture and mandibular fixed prosthesis and to establish vertical dimension and harmonious occlusal plane. Occlusal vertical dimension of 19 mm, which is obtained by 7.5 mm increase between maxillary right lateral incisor and mandibular canine, was established using temporary prosthesis via diagnostic wax-up. Patient adaptation with newly formed vertical dimension was verified during 8 week follow-up period. Within the information of interim prostheses, final restoration was constructed and delivered. The patient showed sound occlusal scheme and esthetic profile.
Recently, sagittal split ramus oseotomy and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy have been commonly performed for the correction of mandibular prognathism, occurred to abundant oriental people. Many authors have studied the soft tissue change after orthognathic surgery, especially between mandibular hard tissues and soft tissue of lower lip, but the study of upper lip change is comparatively little. Therefore, we studied the 12 patients, operated only sagittal split ramus osteotomy without genioplasty or maxillary osteotomy in department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Hanyang university hospital from 1996. 1. 1. to 1998. 7. 20. Preoperative and postoperative cephalometric view was measured to know the change of upper lip position and shape after mandibular setback. The result were obtained as follows. 1. The ratio of upper lip change amount to lower incisor horizontal movement was 15.1%. 2. The ratio of lower facial profile between Sn-Stm and Stm-Mes was changed from 1 : 2.352 to 1 : 2.069 after operation. 3. Post-operative upper lip was flattened 72.4% compared with pre-operative one. 4. The vermilion zone of the upper lip increased 56 % horizontally, 5.8% vertically after operation. 5. The vermilion zone ratio of the lower lip to the upper lip was changed from 1 : 1.253 to 1 : 1.348. 6. The distance between esthetic line and Ls was changed from -3.958mm to -1.15mm.
