Gain-Clamped L-Band EDFA Incorporating An Inline Fiber Bragg Grating

  • This paper present a gain-clamped L-band EDFA based on reflecting back a portion of backward amplified spontaneous emission into the erbium-doped fiber section, utilizing a fiber Bra99 grating. By using FBG with R=66.1 and 99.9%, the gain is clamped at 15.1 and 14.3㏈, respectively, with a variation of less than 0.2㏈ for an input signal power as high as -5 ㏈m. However, a small noise figure penalty is obtained, which is the consequence of the gain clamping effect.

An All-Optical Gain-Controlled Amplifier for Bidirectional Transmission

  • A novel all-optical gain-controlled (AOGC) bidirectional amplifier is proposed and demonstrated in a compact structure. The AOGC function using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pairs controls both directional signals independently, and combinations of optical interleavers and isolators suppress Rayleigh backscattering (RB) noise. The amplifier achieves high and constant gain with a wide dynamic input signal range and low noise figure. The performance does not depend on the input signal conditions, whether static-state or transient signals, or whether there is symmetric or asymmetric data traffic on bidirectional transmission. Transmission comparison experiments between invariable symmetrical and random variable asymmetric bidirectional data traffic verify that the all-optical gain control and bidirectional amplification functions are successfully combined into this proposed amplifier.

Influences of the Filter Effect on Pulse Splitting in Passively Mode-Locked Fiber Laser with Positive Dispersion Cavity

  • Based on the extended nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation, the influences of the filter effect on pulse splitting in a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with positive dispersion cavity are investigated theoretically. Numerical results show that, as the bandwidth of the spectral filter decreases, the nonlinear chirp appended to the pulse increases under the combined action of the filter effect of the super-Gaussian spectral filter and the self-phase modulation effect. On further decreasing the bandwidth, the wave breaking of the pulse takes place. In addition, by varying the pump power of the laser or the profile of the spectral filter, the influences of the filter effect on pulse splitting also change accordingly.

  • For the first time we compare two kinds of optical frequency combs, one of which is based on a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser and the other is based on a mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser. The comparison is performed by measuring an optical frequency standard with these two combs simultaneously. The two frequency measurements agree within 1.8 Hz ($3.8{\times}10^{-15}$) with the uncertainty of 17.2 Hz ($3.6{\times}10^{-14}$), from which it can be concluded that the Ti:sapphire-based frequency comb and the fiber-based frequency comb have no systematic discrepancy at this level of uncertainty.

  • All-optical fiber-type gain flattening filer (GFF) for an EDFA (Erbium doped fiber amplifier) were fabricated by using a FBT (fiber biconical tapered) process and the performance of the GFF was tested and athermal package was proposed. Historically, the chief contributor to gain unevenness has been the EDFA. Due to the inherent gain response of the EDFA's operation, there is always a modest imbalance in the gain applied as a function of wavelength. FBT methods have been used to make fiber type couplers and WDM filter since 1980. Attractivity of this methods was simple, cost effective and thermal stability. Simulation program tool is made to design target GFF profile for this paper. Fiber coupler manufacturing machine is modified for the GFF process. The final GFF is obtained by cascading 4 unit filter that has 6 taper stage. Test result shows 1 dB of wavelength flatness in the C band. Polarization dependent loss is under 0.15dB. The center wavelength variation is below ${\pm}$0.35nm at the temperature range of $20^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$.

초광대역 광증폭기에 대한 연구

  • 고용량 파장다중분할(WDM) 전송 시스템의 수요가 폭발적으로 증가함에 따라 기존의 erbium-doped fiber amplifiers(EDFA)가 제공하는 이득 대역을 넘어서는 대역폭의 광증폭기의 개발이 촉진되고 있다. 에르븀 이외의 새로운 회토류 첨가물을 사용한 증폭기와 광섬유 내에서의 비선형 현상인 라만 산란에 의한 라만 증폭기에 집중적인 연구가 그 예라 하겠다. 최근 몇 년간의 집중적인 연구를 통하여 현재의 광대역 광 증폭기는 기존의 EDFA(C 벤드 EDFA)가 제공하는 광이득대역의 4∼5배 정도를 쉽게 제공할 수 있다. 이러한 목적을 가지고 통신시장에서 사용될 수 있는 1500nm 근처 대역의 증폭에 대한 세가지의 증폭 기술이 연구되고 있다. 우선, S+밴드(1450-1480nm)와 S밴드(1480-1530nm)의 증폭을 위한 thulium-doped fluoride fiber amplifiers(TDFFA), C 밴드(1530-1560nm)와 L 밴드(1570-1610nm)를 위한 EDFA, 그리고 마지막으로 100nm 이상의 이득대역과 S+에서 L밴드까지 증폭파장대역의 선택이 자유로운 라만 증폭기가 있다. 또한 위의 세 기술을 직렬 또는 병렬로 조합하여 사용하는 증폭기가 있다. 이러한 증폭기 모두에 대해서 실험적인 보고는 많이 있었으나, 내부의 에너지 준위가 복잡하여 증폭 기제가 복잡하고, 실험 파라미터를 측정하기가 어려워서 광대역증폭기의 성능을 예측하기 어려운 점이 있었다. 게다가 이러한 상황에서 광대역증폭기에 대한 해석적이거나 수치해석적인 심도깊은 연구가 부족하여 앞으로 증폭기를 다양하게 응용하기 위한 성능의 예측이 어려울 것으로 보인다. 이는 광대역 증폭기 기반의 전송 시스템을 성공적으로 적용하는데 제한을 줄 것이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 광대역 증폭기(C/L밴드 EDFA, 라만 증폭기, TDFA)에 대한 실험적인 분석뿐만 아니라 해석적, 수치해석적인 분석 방법까지 그 응용의 예와 함께 소개할 것이다.

Gain Dependent Optimum Pulse Generation Rates of a Hybrid-Type Actively and Passively Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

  • We have experimentally observed and theoretically analyzed the gain dependent optimum repetition rates of a hybrid-type active and passive mode locked laser pulses in an erbium-doped fiber laser of the figure-of-eight geometry by utilizing a nonlinear amplifier loop mirror (NALM) as a saturable absorber and a directional-coupler type electro-optic modulator as an active mode locker. Transform-limited mode-locked pulses of about 10 ps width were obtained at repetition rates which correspond to harmonics of the cavity fundamental frequency and depend on the optical amplifier gain in the NALM.

  • 광통신이 발달하면서 보다 빠른 정보전송을 할 수 있지만 다른 전송매체와 마찬가지로 장거리 전송 시 손실이 발생하고 이러한 문제의 해결책으로 광 증폭기의 필요성이 대두 되었다. 기존의 광신호 증폭기에서는 광 신호를 전기신호 변환한 후 증폭하고 다시 증폭된 전기신호를 광신호로 변환하는 과정과 복잡한 구조는 전송시스템의 병목 문제를 유발하였다. 이러한 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 순수 광신호 증폭시스템인 어븀첨가광섬유증폭기 (EDFA)를 제작하고 EDFA의 이득평탄화를 위하여 이득평탄화 필터로 MLPFG를 제작하여 적용하였다. 제작된 EDFA는 20dB 이상의 신호 증폭을 보였다.

  • Isolator가 삽입된 Erbium 첨가 광섬유광원을 제작하였고 그 특성을 측정하였다. Isolator 삽입 유무에 따른 광섬유광원의 전 온도구간($-32^{\sim}75^{\circ}C$)에서의 중심파장 안정도는 수 ppm으로 큰 차이를 보이지 않았고, 귀환광 변화($-22^{\sim}-20dB$)에 따른 중심파장 안정도에서는 isolator 삽입이후에 1.6ppm으로 귀환광 변화에 매우 둔감한 결과를 얻었다.

Suppression of Output Distortion in a Gyroscope using Fiber Amplifier/Source by Tracking of Optimum Modulation Amplitude

  • We propose and demonstrate a new scheme for suppression of output distortion in an open-loop gyroscope employing an erbium-doped fiber amplifier/source (FAS). In addition to the main modulation for the rotation rate measurement, a small auxiliary modulation at a different frequency is used to extract an error signal, which is necessary for keeping the quasi-dc component of the feedback signal power at a constant level for varying rotation rate. By active tracking of the optimum modulation condition using this two-frequency modulation scheme, we obtain stable gyro output with suppressed distortion as well as stable FAS characteristics. We also calculate the distortion in the gyro response due to the feedback effect, from which we estimate the FAS gyro output distortion due to the residual ac feedback effect when the dc feedback effect is removed by the proposed scheme. The measured residual deviation agrees reasonably with the estimation.
