This paper treats the failure analysis of prestressing steel wires with different kinds of localised damage in the form of a surface defect (crack or notch) or as a mechanical action (transverse loads). From the microscopical point of view, the micromechanisms of fracture are shear dimples (associated with localised plasticity) in the case of the transverse loads and cleavage-like (related to a weakest-link fracture micromechanism) in the case of cracked wires. In the notched geometries the microscopic modes of fracture range from the ductile micro-void coalescence to the brittle cleavage, depending on the stress triaxiality in the vicinity of the notch tip. From the macroscopical point of view, fracture criteria are proposed as design criteria in damage tolerance analyses. The transverse load situation is solved by using an upper bound theorem of limit analysis in plasticity. The case of the cracked wire may be treated using fracture criteria in the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics on the basis of a previous finite element computation of the stress intensity factor in the cracked cylinder. Notched geometries require the use of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and numerical analysis of the stress-strain state at the failure situation. A fracture criterion is formulated on the basis of the critical value of the effective or equivalent stress in the Von Mises sense.

A ground motion resulting from the destructive earthquakes can subject reinforced concrete members to very large forces. The reinforced concrete shear walls are designed as earthquake-resistant members of building structure in order to prevent severe damage due to the ground motions. The current research activities on seismic behavior of reinforced concrete member under ground motions have been limited to the shaking table test or equivalent static cyclic test and the obtained results have been summarized and proposed for the seismic design retrofit of structural columns or shear walls. The present study predicted the seismic response and failure behavior of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to base acceleration using the finite element method. A decrease in strength and stiffness, yielding of reinforcing bar, and repetition of crack closing and opening due to seismic load with cyclic nature are accompanied by the crack which is necessarily expected to take place in concrete member. In this study the nonlinear material models for concrete and reinforcing bar based on biaxial stress field and algorithm of dynamic analysis were combined to construct the analytical program using the finite element method. The analytical seismic response and failure behaviors of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to several base accelerations were compared with reliable experimental result.

In this paper, we proposed a numerical model based on moment-curvature, to evaluate the resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) members subjected to blast loading. To consider the direct shear failure mode, we introduced a dimensionless spring element based on the empirical direct shear stress-slip relation. Based on the dynamic increase factor equations for materials, new dynamic increase factor equations were constructed in terms of the curvature rate for the section which could be directly applied to the moment-curvature relation. Additionally, equivalent bending stiffness was introduced in the plastic hinge region to consider the effect of bond-slip. To verify the validity of the proposed model, a comparative study was conducted against the experimental results, and the superiority of this numerical model was confirmed through comparison with the analytical results of the single-degree of freedom model. Pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams were produced to evaluate the resistance of members against bending failure and direct shear failure, and additional parametric studies were conducted.

This paper performed a comprehensive evaluation of the results of the 2007 Ground Response Analysis Round Robin Test, at which 14 institutions and individuals participated. The submitted results showed significant discrepancies. The main reason for this difference has been attributed to the dispersion in the estimated shear wave velocity profiles and dynamic soil curves. It is therefore concluded that accurate evaluation of the material properties is of primary importance for reliable estimation of the ground vibration. Evaluation of the effect of the analysis method showed that the equivalent linear analysis overestimates the peak ground acceleration, but overall the results are similar to a total stress nonlinear analysis. However, the total and effective stress nonlinear analyses show distinct discrepancies, the effective stress analyses consistently resulting in a lower response due to the development of the excess pore water pressure and thus softer response.
As a case study on aspect ratio behavior, Kaolin, zeolite, $TiO_2$, pozzolan and diatomaceous earth minerals are investigated using wet milling with 0.3 pai media. The grinding process using small media of 0.3 pai is suitable for current work processing applications. Primary particles with average particle size distribution D50, ${\sim}6{\mu}m$ are shifted to submicron size, D50 ${\sim}0.6{\mu}m$, after grinding. Grinding of particles is characterized by various size parameters such as sphericity as geometric shape, equivalent diameter, and average particle size distribution. Herein, we systematically provide an overview of factors affecting the primary particle size reduction. Energy consumption for grinding is determined using classical grinding laws, including Rittinger's and Kick's laws. Submicron size is obtained at maximum frictional shear stress. Alterations in properties of wettability, heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and adhesion increase with increasing particle surface area. In the comparison of the aspect ratio of the submicron powder, the air heat conductivity and the total heat release amount increase 68 % and 2 times, respectively.

This article presents a nonclassical size dependent model based on the modified couple stress theory to study and analyze the bending behavior of perforated microbeams under different loading patterns. Modified equivalent material and geometrical parameters for perforated beam are presented. The modified couple stress theory with one material length scale parameter is adopted to incorporate the microstructure effect into the governing equations of perforated beam structure. The governing equilibrium equations of the perforated Timoshenko as well as the perforated Euler Bernoulli are developed based on the potential energy minimization principle. The Poisson's effect is included in the governing equilibrium equations. Regular square perforation configuration is considered. Based on Fourier series expansion, closed forms for the bending deflection and the rotational displacements are obtained for simply supported perforated microbeams. The proposed methodology is validated and compared with the available results in the literature and an excellent agreement is detected. Numerical results demonstrated the applicability of the proposed methodology to investigate the bending behavior of regularly squared perforated beams incorporating microstructure effect under different excitation patterns. The obtained results are significantly important for the design and production of perforated microbeam structures.

In most design codes, soils are classified as either sandy or clayey soils, and appropriate design equations for each soil type are used to estimate their soil behaviour. However, sand-fine mixtures, which are typically referred to as intermediate soils, are somewhere at the middle of sandy or clayey soils, and therefore a unified interpretation of soil behaviour is necessary. In this paper, a series of cyclic shear tests were carried out for three different combinations of sand-fine mixtures with various fines content. Silica-sand mixture and fines (Iwakuni natural clay, Tottori silt, kaolinite) were mixed together with various mass ratios, while paying attention to the changes of void ratios expressed in terms of sand structure. The cyclic shear strengths of the mixtures below the threshold fines content were examined with the increasing fines contents. As a result, as the fines contents increased, their cyclic deviator stress ratios decreased for dense samples while it increased for loose samples. Additionally, cyclic deviator stress ratio of the mixtures was estimated using the concept of equivalent granular void ratio.
Based on an estimating method for post-cyclic strength and stiffness with cyclic triaxial tests proposed by one of the authors, cyclic Direct Simple Shear (DSS) tests were carried out to confirm whether the method can be adapted to DSS test on fine-grained soils: silty clay, plastic silt, and non-plastic silt. Results from cyclic and post-cyclic DSS tests were interpreted by a modified method as adopted for cyclic and post-cyclic triaxial tests. In particular, influence of plasticity index for fine-grained soils and initial static shear stress (ISSS) was emphasised. Findings obtained from the present study are: (i) liquefaction strength ratio of fine-grained soils decreases with decreasing plasticity index and increasing ISSS; (ii) plasticity index and ISSS did not markedly influence relation between equivalent cyclic stiffness and shear strain relations; (iii) the higher the plasticity index of fine-grained soils is, the less the strength ratio decreases with increment of a normalcies excess pore water pressure (NEPWP); (iv) stiffness ratio of plastic silt has large activity decrease rapidly with increasing excess pore water pressure; and (v) post-cyclic strength and stiffness results from DSS tests agree well with those predicted by the method modified from a procedure used for triaxial test results.

A 9-node degenerated shell finite element(FE), which has been developed for assessment of ultimate pressure capacity and nonlinear analysis for nuclear containment building is described in this paper. Reissner-Midnlin(RM) assumptions are adopted to develop the shell FE so that transverse shear deformation effects is considered. Material model for concrete prior to cracking is constructed based on the equivalent stress-equivalent strain relationship. Tension stiffening model, shear transfer mechanism and compressive strength reduction model are used to model the material behavior of concrete after cracking. Niwa and Aoyagi-Yamada failure criteria have been adapted to find initial cracking point in compression-tension and tension-tension region, respectively. Finally, the performance of the developed program is tested and demonstrated with several examples. From the numerical tests, the present results show a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.
A new method called S-SRICOS is proposed to predict the local scour depth around bridge piers. The S-SRICOS method is a simplified version of the SRICOS method which was developed to predict the scour depth versus time curve around bridge piers. The SRICOS method which considers the time effect based on the soil properties and the hydraulic parameters can handle a multi-flood hydrograph and multi-layer soil systems with the SRICOS program. An attempt was made to simplify the method to the point where only hand calculations would be required. The concept of the equivalent time was developed leer this purpose. The S-SROICOS method requires only 4 parameters such as pier width, design bridge life, design velocity corresponding to the design bridge life, and initial scour rate of the soil. The S-SRICOS method was verified against 55 cases of the scour depth results using the SRICOS method.
