  • This paper presents characteristic analysis of claw-pole type generator. The analysis is performed using 2D equivalent model by 2D FEM. 3D FEM is used to check whether 2D equivalent model reflects the magnetic characteristics of the actual machine. Initially, 2D equivalent model of the claw-pole type generator is designed only by 3D geometry. Using 2D equivalent model, back emf characteristics are estimated and compared to measurements. The analysis results agree with measurements well and take less time comparing to 3D FEM.

  • The in-situ consolidation behavior of drainage system-installed deposits has three dimensional characteristics. Therefore, for an approximate 2-D plane strain consolidation analysis, it is necessary to convert the 3-D spatial flow of actual cases into the laminar flow simulated by the 2-D plane strain model. . In this paper, in order to properly model the effect of three dimensional characteristics, an equivalent and efficient model has been applied in a finite element technique for the analysis of the drainage system-installed soil deposits. The equivalent two dimensional model involves equivalent permeabilities and drainage widths. To validate the equivalent two dimensional model, three dimensional analyses were per formed by using the ABAQUS program and the results of 3-D analyses were compared with those of the 2-D analyses. By using the proposed equivalent model, one may be able to appropriately predict the consolidation behavior of drainage system-installed soft deposits.

  • The electromagnetic engine valve actuator is a key technology to achieve variable valve timing in internal combustion engine and the steel core and clapper of the electromagnetic engine valve actuator are laminated to reduce the eddy current loss. To design and characterize the performance of the electromagnetic engine valve actuator, FE (finite element) analysis is the most effective way, but FE (finite element) 3-D modeling of real lamination needs very fine meshes resulting in countless meshes for modeling and numerous computations. In this paper, the equivalent FE 2-D model of electromagnetic engine valve actuator is introduced and FE analysis is performed using the equivalent FE 2-D model.

  • In this study, the equivalent plate model is developed using a finite element method(FEM) based on the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT). The substructure synthesis method is used to consider the control surface. For the verification of the equivalent model, the results of free vibration analysis are compared with the ones of 3D wing structure modeled by using the MSC/NASTRAN.

  • This paper compares the two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) approaches for the numerical determination of the equivalent mechanical properties of fractured rock masses. Both orthogonally-fractured model and discrete fracture networks (DFN) were used for the geometry and 2D models were cut in various directions from 3D model to compare their mechanical properties. Geological data were loosely based on the data available from Sellafield, UK. Analytical method based on compliance tensor transformation was used for investigation in orthogonally fractured rock and numerical experiments were conducted on fractured rock mass with DFN geometry. It is shown that 2D approach always overestimates the elastic modulus of fractured rock masses by a factor of up to around two because fractures are assumed to be perpendicular to the model plane in 2D problems. Poisson ratios tend to have larger values in 2D analysis while there is opposite trend in some sections. The study quantitatively demonstrates the limitation of the 2D approach that uses the simplified model from true 3D geometry.

  • The 4-pole LHSM was composed of the figure-of-eight shaped 3-phase armature windings, DC field windings, and the segmented secondary with the transverse bar track. Three dimensional model of LHSM provided the equivalent reluctance and PM model for 2D FEA. From these 2D FEA models, when the motor was fed by DC and 3-phase currents, the magnetic field were calculated and compared with the results of 3D FEA.

  • In this paper, we propose an equivalent model of array antennas that use open-ended waveguides for effective EM simulation. We first investigate an individual element that consists of an open-ended waveguide and square ground plane. The waveguide length, aperture size, and ground size of the individual element are adjusted to give a similar radiation pattern to that of the individual element of the original antenna. We then apply the designed equivalent model to two different types of array antennas, such as a microstrip patch array and a waveguide array antenna. Comparison of the simulation results using the equivalent model with the results obtained with the original antenna reveals a difference in gain of less than 0.2 dB and a difference in half power beam width(HPBW) of less than $1^{\circ}$. The designed equivalent model is then mounted on a simple aircraft, and the simulation results are again compared to results from the original antenna. We find a 60 % reduction in simulation resources and time when compared with the original antenna model.

  • 3D Equivalent magnetic Circuit Network Method (EMCNM) is comparatively the easy way that analyzes 3D models of Electric Machine by using permeance as a distributive magnetic circuit parameter under the existing magnetic equivalent circuit method and Numerical Method. The existing 3D EMCNM could not correctly describe the shape of an analysis target when using rectangular shape element or fan shape element, so it made errors when calculating permeance. Therefore, this paper proposes the trapezoidal element contained rectangular element, fan-shape element, and quadrilateral element to express a shape. The proposed method in this research was confirmed as a useful and an accurate method through comparing with the analysis result of SRM model that is sufficiently guaranteed by 2D-Analysis.

  • The formation of exit burr in drilling metals is analyzed by finite element method. The simplified burr formation model is suggested for the complex mechanism of burr formation in drilling on the basis of experimental data. Using the model the magnitude of burr is predicted and the effect of material properties of workpiece and cutting condition on burr formation is analyzed in the present study. The suggested model is verified by comparing simulation results and experimental ones. The predicted size and shape of burr are in good agreement with those observed by experiment.
