  • Heavy-weight head slides may cause excessive inertia impact & moment on the machine tool structure when they move or stop abruptly during operation. Consequently these inertia impact and unbalanced moment bring transient vibrations and rough sliding motions on the machine structure. Machine tool engineers have tried many kind of feed-slide designs in order to solve this problem; for example, the design optimization of the moving structure for minimum weight and maximum stiffness, box-in-box type slide design, and so on. In this article, force and moment equilibrium equations regarding to the inertia force & moment were derived for each one of a mold M/C's head slides. Furthermore, five different design configurations of head slide assembly were reviewed for its design improvement regarding to force & moment calculations and finite element structural analysis results.

  • The stochastic finite element method(SFEM) based structural optimal design is presented. Random system response including uncertainties for the design variable is calculated with first order perturbation method. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients is developed using the equilibrium equation and first-order perturbed equation. Numerical results are presented for a truss, frame and plate structures with displacement and stress constraints. The sensitivity calculation proposed here is compared with finite difference method. A nonlinear programming technique is used to solve the problem. The procedure is easily incorporated with existing deterministic structural optimization.

  • In this second part of the paper, the automatic mesh generation and remeshing algorithm using bubble packing method is applied to the nonlinear problem. The remeshing/refinement procedure is necessary in the large deformation process especially because the mesh distortion deteriorates the convergence and accuracy. To perform the nonliear analysis, the transfer of state variables such as displacement and strain is added to the algorithm of Part 1. The equilibrium equation based on total Lagrangian formulation and elasto-viscoplastic model is used. For the numerical experiment, the upsetting process including the contact constraint condition is analyzed by two refinement criteria. And from the result, it is addressed that the present algorithm can generate the refined meshes easily at the largely deformed area with high error.

  • Particle-particle interaction is of great importance in the study of suspension rheology. In this research we have investigated the hydrodynamic interaction between two identical cylinders in viscoelastic fluids numerically as a model problem for the study of viscoelastic suspension. We confine two neutrally buoyant cylinders between two parallel plates and impose a shear flow. We determine the migration velocity of two cylinders. The result shows that cylinders move toward or away from each other depending upon the initial distance between them and that there is an equilibrium distance between two cylinders in viscoelastic fluids regardless of the initial distance. In the case of Newtonian fluid, there is no relative movement as expected. The results partly explain the chaining phenomena of spherical particles in shear flows of viscoelastic fluids.

  • Summary: The analysis of human genetic variation is one of the key issues far the understanding of the different drug response among individuals and many programs are developed for this purpose. However, current publicly available programs have so many limitations such as time complexity problem for the analysis of large amount of alleles or SNPs, difficult manipulation for installation, data import, and usage, and low-quality visual output. Here we present workbench for SNP anlaysis, SNPAnalyzer. SNPAnalyzer consists of 3 main modules: 1)Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium ,2) Haplotype Estimation, and 3) Linkage Disequilibrium. Each module has several different widely-used algorithms for the extensive analysis and can handle large amount of alleles and SNPs with simple format. Analysis results are displayed in user-friendly formats such as table, graph and map. SNPAnalyzer is developed using C and C$^{++}$ and users can easily access through web-interftce. Availability: SNPAnalyzer can be freely implemented at http://www.istech.info/istech/board/login_form.jsp

  • This study is to develop design sensitivity analysis method based on continuum theory for the actual buckling load of vehicle passenger compartment with respect to sizing design variables. For nonlinear structural analysis, both geometric and material nonlinear effects are considered. The total Lagrangian formulation for incremental equilibrium analysis and one-point linear eigenvalue problem for buckling analysis are utilized. Numerical methods are presented to evaluate design sensitivity expressions, using structural analysis results from FEM code. Optical design of vehicle passenger compartment with buckling constraint solved using Gradient projection method.

  • Increasing traffic and bandwidth requirements bring challenges to the next generation wireless networks (5G). As one of the main technology in 5G networks, Ultra-Dense Network (UDN) can be used to improve network coverage. In this paper, a radio over fiber based model is proposed to solve the load balancing problem in ultra-dense network. Stochastic differential game is introduced for the load balancing algorithm, and optimal load allocated to each access point (RAP) are formulated as Nash Equilibrium. It is proved that the optimal load can be achieved and the stochastic differential game based scheme is applicable and acceptable. Numerical results are given to prove the effectiveness of the optimal algorithm.

  • In an opportunistic network, one of the most challenging issues is the equilibrium of the network traffic and transmission delay for forwarding messages. To resolve this problem, we propose a new forwarding scheme, called the direction entropy-based forwarding scheme (DEFS), using the main direction and direction entropy based on the information collected about the directions of the nodes in the network. Since each node sends a message to another node with a different location and less direction entropy, DEFS utilizes those nodes that are more likely to travel to various locations to forward the messages to the destination nodes. Experiments were performed on the network simulator NS-2. The results show that DEFS provides better balance than the typical forwarding schemes, such as Epidemic, PRoPHET, and WAIT.

  • We present a high-resolution van Leer-type numerical scheme for the isentropic model of fluid flows in a nozzle with variable cross-section. Basically, the scheme is an improvement of the Godunov-type scheme. The scheme is shown to be well-balanced, as it can capture exactly equilibrium states. Numerical tests are conducted which include comparisons between the van Leer-type scheme and the Godunov-type scheme. It is shown that the van Leer-type scheme achieves a very good accuracy for initial data belong to both supersonic and supersonic regions, and the exact solution eventually possesses a resonant phenomenon.

  • An epicyclic gearing system is compact and lightweight. However, it is difficult to share the driving force equally because the system has closed gear trains with multiple driving points, and it always has geometrical errors in the elements. Thus, in the case of planetary gears, the first problem is how to distribute the load evenly to the numerous planets. The method widely used abroad for this purpose is to utilize the elastic deformation of the components of the structure. However, the deflection is very complicated, and it is very easy for vibration problems to occur because of the decrease in the natural frequencies. Therefore, to equalize the load on the planets, this paper discusses the principle and theory behind the functioning of a floating intermediate ring. This magnifies the displacement of a planet's center arising from the equilibrium of the load and the lubricating film pressure, which improves the compliance of the planets. The results show that load equalization of the planets is possible through this improvement in their compliance.
