  • The Raney Ni catalyst was fabricated by mechanochemically process(MC process) in the Al-Ni system. Intermetallic compound obtained by mechanical alloying was leached in an alkaline solution. The characteristics of the mechanically alloyed powder and Raney Ni catalyst were analyzed by XRD, ICP-AES and EXAFS. In Al-50wt.%Ni, the metastable intermetallic compound phase close to AlNi phase was obtained by mechanical alloying unlike Al-Ni equilibrium phase diagram. The metastable intermetallic compound was transformed into $Al_3$$Ni_2$phase via the annealing at $750^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of Raney Ni fabricated by MC process was mainly bcc Ni including fcc Ni.

  • The feasibility of an oil-free, motor-driven, two-stage centrifugal compressor supported by air bump bearings is investigated. This centrifugal compressor is driven by a 75 kW motor at an operating speed of 39,000 RPM, and a pressure ratio of the compressor is set up to 4. The analysis is performed by using bearing equilibrium position, heaving stillness, Campbell diagram, unbalance response, and stability. It is demonstrated in this paper that air bump bearings can be adopted well to an oil-free, motor-driven, centrifugal compressor. Specially, Cu-coated bump bearings have enough damping force to reduce a synchronous unbalance for rigid modes of the two-stage compressor. Futhermore, this concept may be applied to the flexible rotor system such as high speed turbomachinery with a super critical speed.

  • The Roordynamic feasibility of Micro Power System supported by air foil bearings is investigated. The Micro Power System is new portable power source based on brayton cycle, which consists of compressor, turbine, generator, and combustion chamber. In this paper, the analysis of Rotordynamic characteristics of Micro Power System is performed based upon the bearing equilibrium position, Campbell diagram and stability. As a result, it is demonstrated that the air foil bearings could be adopted well to the Micro Power System. However, for more stable operation at target running speed, the damping characteristics of air foil bearing should be enhanced.

  • In this study, the computer program was developed to predict the engine performances and exhaust emissions of a 4-cylinder 4-stroke cycle ignition engine including intake and exhaust system. The simulation models applied to each process were as follows. For the combustion process, two zone model which requires only one empirical constant was applied, and for the gas exchange process, the method of characteristics that allows the calculations of the time variation and spatial variation of properties along the pipes was used. Constant pressure perfect mixing model was applied to take into account of the interaction at manifold branches. To predict exhaust emissions, twelve chemical species were considered to be present in combustion products. These species were calculated through equilibrium thermodynamics and kinetic theory. The empirical constants reduced to least number as possible were determined through the comparison with the experimental indicator diagram of one particular operating condition and these constants were applied to other operating conditions. The predicted performances and emissions were compared with the experimental results over the wide range of operating conditions.

  • We theoretically consider blends of two monodisperse one-end-functionalized homopolymers (denoted by A and B) capable of forming clusters between functional groups (stickers) using weak segregation theory. In this model system resulting molecular architectures via clustering resemble star copolymers having many A- and B-arms. Minimizing the total free energy with respect the cluster distribution, the equilibrium distribution of clusters is obtained and used for RPA (Random Phase Approximation) equations as input. For the case that polymers are functionalized by only one kind of sticker, the phase diagrams show that the associations promote the macrophase separation. When there is strong affinity between stickers belonging to the different polymer species, on the other hand, the phase diagram show a suppression of the macrophase separation at the range of high temperature regime, as well as the phase coexistence between a disordered and a mesoscopic phase at the relatively lower temperatures.

  • The bonding for Aluminum and Copper in the air is investigated in this study. This bonding method does not include the special process of removing aluminum oxide films. In case of this bending, each metal Is heated at bonding temperature where is above eutectic temperature of Al-Cu system and below melting point of Aluminum. The liquefaction around the bonding surface occurs after the diffusion at solid state of each metal. This phenomenon is predicted by the temperature range above eutectic temperature of Al-Cu equilibrium phase diagram.

  • Electrodeposited Zn-Ni alloy coatings are of particular interest for improving the corrosion resistance of steel in a number of enviornments. Of particular interest is the relationship between composition, structure and corrosion rate. This paper firstly reviews the literature regarding composition-structure relationships of Zn-Ni electrodeposits and compares them with the equilibrium phase diagram. Secondly, research was carried out on a wide range of coatings which were produced in the laboratory and their structure and corrosion rates determined. It was found that unambiguous identification of phases from XRD data can be difficult. Maximum corrosion resistance of deposits is obtained at 12-13% Ni, with a $\gamma$ phase structure and predomination of (600) and (411) reflections. Compatibility is important with regard to chromate conversion coatings.

  • Carbonate species in aqueous solution play an important role in the determination of chemical properties of water in relation with alkalinity, buffer capacity, biological productivity, and so on. These compounds also have reactive characteristics such as interphasal reactions between solid, liquid, and gas phases. In the absence of solid materials, the total amount and relative abundance of each carbonate species are directly influenced by the partial pressure of $CO_2$ gas in the atmosphere, which in turn significantly affects the properties of aquatic system. In the water/wastewater treatment process along with the wastes treatment and recycling process which occurring in aquatic environment, it is essential to figure out its characteristics for their optimization and one of its most influential features upon these processes is determined by carbonate species. To understand the fundamental aspect of the relationship between the partial pressure of $CO_2$ gas and chemical features of water, especially pH, the working partial pressure of pure $CO_2$ gas that produced by contacting the dry ice with water has been estimated based on equilibrium calculation. The equilibrium constants for the dissociation ot carbonic acid were determined using van't Hoff equation and the distribution diagram of carbonate species according to the pH has been constructed to substantiate the results of equilibrium calculation. The estimated working partial pressure of pure $CO_2$ gas was found to be a function of the concentration of carbonates in solution, which suggesting that Prior evaluation of the working partial pressure of gas is essential for a better understanding of aquatic interactions.

  • Cracking of rice caused by moisture migration during storage under different relative humidity conditions was investigated for the establishment of safe storage condition of rice. Rice was cracked when a large difference in equilibrium relative humidity $({\Delta}ERH)$ between the rice and the environment was present. External and internal cracks were generated as the results of moisture desorption and adsorption, respectively. The external cracks by moisture desorption generated in all directions and shaped irregularly, while the internal cracks by moisture adsorption did in radial direction and showed a typical shape. The cracking trend could be analyzed by the Weibull function, and the cracking constant increased with ${\Delta}ERH$. The frequency of cracked rice increased linearly with In $({\Delta}ERH)$. The critical crack-inducing ${\Delta}ERH$ was $11.3{\sim}16.4%$ during desorption and $10.8{\sim}17.1%$ during adsorption. A diagram for the safe storage of rice was developed with respect to the initial moisture content and the water activity of rice.
