  • Electrochemical and thermodynamic properties of $MmNi_5$ and the related alloys for nickel-metal hydride battery(Ni-MH) were studied in terms of the equilibrium hydrogen pressure. $MmNi_5$ alloy with high equilibrium hydrogen pressure(10~20atm at room temperature), which is usually difficult to charge, was substituted for Al in part. Partial substitution of Al made not only the equilibrium pressure to be reduced remarkably, but also the enthalpy change depending on the formation of metal hydride to be agreed to the value in gas phase reaction and electrochemical reaction. Besides the composition of Al which can be given the maximum discharge capacity was turned out to be between the 0.5~1.0 atoms of Al.

  • Unsteady vaporization of a droplet quiescent in a high pressure environment are studied with emphasis placed oil the modeling of equilibrium at vapor-liquid interface. Complete set of conservation equations for liquid and gas phases is numerically time integrated. Vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics are solved by f]ash equilibrium calculation method. The model was proper]y validated with experiment and the improvement in the solution accuracy was made. Vaporization of n-pentane fuel droplet in nitrogen background gas is examined. Effects of ambient gas solubility, property variation, transient diffusion, and multicomponent transport on the droplet vaporization are investigated systematically. High-pressure effects on the droplet vaporization is examined and discussed.

  • In this paper the efficient space marching Viscous Shock Layer and Parabolized Navier-Stokes method have been applied to study the complex 3-D hypersonic equilibrium chemically reacting flowfilelds over sphere-cone($10^{\circ}$) vehicle at low angles of attack($0^{\circ}~5^{\circ}), Mach 20, and an altitude of 35km. The current bluntbody/afterbody space marching numerical method predicts the complex flowfields accurately and efficiently even on a small computer. The shock thickness from equilibrium air model is thinner than that from the perfect gas model. The windside wall heat-transfer rate, pressure and skin friction force were increased significantly when compared with those of leeside. The CA, CN, CM were increased almost linearly with the angle of attack in this region. The wall pressure, heat transfer, skin friction and axial force coeffient from equilibrium model were much higher than those from perfect gas model. The center of pressure moved forward with the increase of angle of attack.

  • Gas hydrate is a special kind of inclusion compound that can be formed by capturing gas molecules to water lattice in high pressure and low temperature conditions. When referred to standard conditions, $1m^3$ solid hydrates contain up to $172Nm^3$ of methane gas, depending on the pressure and temperature of production, Such large volumes make natural gas hydrates can be used to store and transport natural gas. In this study, three-phase equilibrium conditions for forming methane hydrate were theoretically obtained in aqueous single electrolyte solution containing 3wt% Nacl. The results show that Nacl acts as a inhibitor, but help gases such as ethan, propane, i-butane, and n-butane reduce the hydrate formation pressure at the same temperature.

  • Adsorption characteristics of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) by activated carbon fiber(ACF) were investigated using a continuous system for benzene, toluene, xylene(BTX) generation. Studied characteristics for adsorption were equilibrium capacity, accumulative adsorption, and breakthrough curve. Operating variables were adsorption temperature(25~45$^{\circ}C$) and partial pressure(1.2~12 mmHg) of BTX. The experimental results show that the adsorption equilibrium capacity increases with increasing partial pressure of BTX and decreases with increasing temperature. It was also found that the break point was decreased with increasing partial pressure, temperature and gas flow rate due to an effect of mass transfer of adsorbate.

  • Based on limit equilibrium principles, this study presents a theoretical derivation of a new analytical formulation for estimating magnitude and lateral earth pressure distribution on a retaining wall subjected to seismic loads. The proposed solution accounts for failure wedge inclination, unit weight and friction angle of backfill soil, wall roughness, and horizontal and vertical seismic ground accelerations. The current analysis predicts a nonlinear lateral earth pressure variation along the wall with and without seismic loads. A parametric study is conducted to examine the influence of various parameters on lateral earth pressure distribution. Findings reveal that lateral earth pressure increases with the increase of horizontal ground acceleration while it decreases with the increase of vertical ground acceleration. Compared to classical theory, the position of resultant lateral earth force is located at a higher distance from wall base which in turn has a direct impact on wall stability and economy. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the computations of lateral earth pressure distribution based on the suggested analytical method.

  • In this paper, the ionization characteristics of noble gases are studied numerically behind strong shock waves. As a first step, the equilibrium ionization mechanism of noble gases is modeled in wide ranges of temperature and pressure. As a next step the equilibrium ionization model is coupled with fluid dynamic equations to analyze the local thermodynamic equilibrium(LTE) ionization process at high temperature and pressure conditions behind the strong imploding shock waves. The ionization characteristics of xenon gas is studied in a wide range of test conditions with thermal radiation effects. Hence, the results give optimal conditions of maximum ionization and radiation behind the imploding shock waves.

  • In this paper, we present the development of a new training system for equilibrium sense and postural control. This system consists of an unstable platform, a force plate, a computer, and training programs. The unstable platform provides 360 degrees of movement allowing for training in all directions. To evaluate the effects of the training system, we performed various experiments to train the ability of equilibrium sense and postural control of fifteen young healthy subjects. We measured the time a subject maintains his or her center of pressure on a target, the time a subject moves his or her center of pressure to a target, and the mean absolute deviation of the trace before and after the training. We analyzed these parameters obtained before and after the training using paried-sample T-test. The result shows that the subjects experienced distinctive enhancement in their ability of postural control through the training using our system.

  • Hydrogen is considered to be the most important future energy carrier in many applications reducing significantly greenhouse gas emissions, but the explosion safety issues associated with hydrogen applications need to be investigated and fully understood to be applicable as the carrier. The risk associated with a explosion depends on an understanding of the impacts of the explosion, particularly the pressure-time history during the explosion. This work provides the effects of explosion parameters, such as specific heat ratio of burned and unburned gas, equilibrium maximum explosion pressure, and burning velocity, on the pressure-time history with flame growth model. The pressure-time history is dominantly depending on the burning velocity and equilibrium maximum explosion pressure of hydrogen-air mixture. The pressure rise rate increase with the burning velocity and equilibrium maximum explosion pressure. The specific heat ratio of unburned gas has more effect on the final explosion pressure increase rate than initial explosion pressure increase rate. However, the specific heat ratio of burned gas has more influence on initial explosion pressure increase rate. The flame speeds are obtained by fitting the experimental data sets. The flame speeds for hydrogen in air based on our experimental data is very low, making a transition from deflagration to detonation in a confined space unlikely under these conditions.

  • In diamond synthesis by metal film growth method under high pressure and high temperature, the nucleation and growth of diamond was observed dependent on the carbon source variation from graphite powder to the heat treated powders of lamp black carbon. At the low driving force condition near equilibrium pressure and temperature line, nucleation of diamond did not occur but growth of seed diamond appeared in the synthesis from lamp black carbon while both nucleation and growth of diamond took place in the synthesis from graphite. Growth morphology change of diamond occurred from cubo-octahedron to octahedron in the synthesis from graphite but very irregular growth of seed diamond occurred in the synthesis from lamp block carbon. Lamp black carbon transformed to recrystallized graphite first and very nucleation of diamond was observed on the recrystallized graphite surface. Growth morphology of diamond on the recrystallized graphite was clear cubo-octahedron even at higher pressure departure condition from equilibrium pressure and temperature line.
