A study on the low Earth orbit (LEO) space environment have been conducted as a use of composites have increased. Among the LEO environmental factors, atomic oxygen is one of the most critical factors because atomic oxygen can react and erode a surface of polymer-based composite materials. POSS (Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane) materials have been widely studied as an atomic oxygen-resistant nanomaterial. In this study, nanocomposites, which are composed of OG (Octaglycidyldimethylsilyl) POSS nanomaterials and DGEBA/DDM epoxy, were fabricated to find out its thermal and mechanical properties. FT-IR results showed that the nanocomposites were fully cured and contained OG POSS enough. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were performed to measure the thermal properties of the nanocomposites. The initial mass loss temperature and char yield were increased through the filling of OG POSS. As the content of OG POSS increased, glass transition temperature tended to increase to 5 wt.% of OG POSS, but the temperature decreased significantly at 10 wt.% of OG POSS. The tensile test results showed that the content of OG POSS did not affect tensile strength and tensile stiffness.
The avoidance of enemy's radar detection is very important issue in the modem electronic weapon system. Researchers have studied to minimize reflected signals of radar. In this research, two types of radar absorbing structure (RAS), 'C'-type shell and 'U'-type shell, were fabricated using fiber-reinforced composite materials and their radar cross section (RCS) were evaluated. The absorption layer was composed of glass fiber reinforced epoxy and nano size carbon-black, and the reflection layer was fabricated with carbon fiber reinforced epoxy. During their manufacturing process, undesired thermal deformation (so called spring-back) was observed. In order to reduce spring-back, the bending angle of mold was controlled by a series of experiments. The spring-back of parts fabricated by using compensated mold was predicted by finite element analysis (ANSYS). The RCS of RAS shells were measured by compact range and predicted by physical optics method. The measured RCS data was well matched with the predicted data.

In this paper, the impact damage behavior of USN-150B carbon/epoxy composite laminates subjected to high velocity impact was studied experimentally and numerically. Square composite laminates stacked with $[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$ quasi-symmetric and $[0/90]_{ns}$ cross-ply stacking sequences and a conical shape projectile with steel core, copper skin and lead filler were considered. First high-velocity impact tests were conducted under various test conditions. Three tests were repeated under the same impact condition. Projectile velocity before and after penetration were measured by infrared ray sensors and magnetic sensors. High-speed camera shots and C-Scan images were also taken to measure the projectile velocities and to obtain the information on the damage shapes of the projectile and the laminate specimens. Next, the numerical simulation was performed using explicit finite element code LS-DYNA. Both the projectile and the composite laminate were modeled using three-dimensional solid elements. Residual velocity history of the impact projectile and the failure shape and extents of the laminates were predicted and systematically examined. The results of this study can provide the understanding on the penetration process of laminated composites during ballistic impact, as well as the damage amount and modes. These were thought to be utilized to predict the decrease of mechanical properties and also to help mitigate impact damage of composite structures.
For structural health monitoring of a complex shaped structure a new sensor that can compensate for the drawbacks of the current sensors such as brittleness is needed and the sensor should be highly flexible and durable. In this study a textile sensor made of polyvinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) which is a type of electroactive polymer was fabricated. And the textile sensors were applied to a complex shaped structure (an egg-box panel made of carbon/epoxy composite) for checking their feasibility of structural health monitoring. To correlate the collapse response with failure mechanisms of the structure the multiply-interrupted compressive test was carried out. During the test, the textile sensors succeeded to prove their applicability for damage detection (crack initiation) by generating electric voltages (0.05 V-0.25 V) in the real time.
This paper visualizes the full-field permittivity distribution at the standard specimens having known electromagnetic characteristics using a scanning free space measurement (SFSM) system. First, in the two Teflon specimens with different thicknesses, the real and loss tangent of permittivity could be measured and the results agreed to the theoretical and other measurement values. Then the system has been applied to Glass/epoxy and visualized different permittivity distribution depending on the material kind. Therefore, this approach will overcome the point measurement limitation of FSM and can be used for even sub-structural full-field electromagnetic evaluation of stealth and radome structures.
ZnAl-LDH(layered double hydroxide) modified with oleic acid(SO-ZnAl LDH) was synthesized and added to the flame retardant ABS compounds containing brominated epoxy resin(BER) and antimony trioxide(${Sb_2}{O_3}$). Flame retardant ABS compounds were manufactured by using a twin-screw co-rotating extruder and subsequently injection molded into several specimen for flame retardancy and mechanical properties. The XRD patterns of ABS nanocomposites showed no peaks. The thermal stability of ABS nanocomposites was enhanced by the addition of SO-ZnAl LDH as shown in TGA results. However, these nanocomposites showed no rating in the UL 94 vertical test at 1.6 mm thickness. Only ABS nanocomposites with additional BER more than 1.5 wt% showed UL 94 V0 rating. Notched Izod impact strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break of flame retardant ABS nanocomposites increased with the proportion of So-ZnAl LDH whereas their melt index decreased.

Increased temperature adversely affects the reliability of a device. So, package material should have high thermal diffusion, i.e., high thermal conductivity. And, there are several other physical properties of polymeric materials that are important to microelectronics packaging, some of which are a low dielectric constant, a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and a high flexural strength. In this study, to get practical maximum packing fraction of AIN (granular type) filled EMC, the properties such as the spiral flow, thermal conductivity, CTE, and water resistance of AIN-filled EMC (65-vol%) were evaluated according to the size of AIN and the filler-size distribution. Also, physical properties of AIN filled EMC above 65-vol% were evaluated according to increasing AIN content at the point of maximum packing fraction (highly loading condition). The high loading conditions of EMC were set $D_L/D_S$=12 and $X_S$=0.25 like as filler of sphere shape and the AIN filled EMC in this conditions can be obtained satisfactory fluidity up to 70-vol%. As a result, the AIN filled EMC (70-vol%) at high loading condition showed improved thermal conductivity (about 6 W/m-K), dielectric constant (2.0~3.0), CTE(less than 14 ppm/$^{\circ}C$) and water resistance. So, the AIN filled EMC (70-vol%) at high loading condition meets the requirement fur advanced microelectronic packaging materials.
Using combinations of carbon and glass fiber composites normally used for strengthening of concrete structures, the hybrid effect from strengthening concrete structures using the composite is studied. To produce the hybrid effects, the specimens were made with optimum proportions of carbon fibers with glass fibers. Then, direct tensile tests were conducted on the hybrid FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) specimens. Unlike the woven fiber sheet currently used in construction sites, the FRP specimens have to be directly combined with the fibers, which make the work very complicated. Therefore, direct tensile test specimens manufacturing method based on the combination of high-tension carbon fibers and E-type glass fibers was proposed and the effects of hybridization is studied through the direct tensile test. By comparing the ductility index, the modulus of elasticity, and the stress-strain curves of the specimens, the most optimum glass to carbon fiber combination ratio for the hybrid FRP was found to be 9 to 1 with ductile K-type epoxy. The study results are discussed in detail in the paper.
Proposed is a new method to determine the characteristic lengths for the failure analysis of composite joint without experiments. New method uses the result that the stress distribution in the characteristic length specimens is linearly proportional to the applied load. The compressive characteristic lengths calculated by the present method are exactly same as the lengths obtained by the conventional method based on experiment. The new tensile characteristic length is defined using the strength of the notched laminate, while previous methods use the strength of the sound laminate. That change allows calculating the tensile characteristic length numerically without experiment like the compressive characteristic length. Finite element analyses are conducted by MSC/NASTRAN. The interface between the fastener and laminate is modeled by the contact surface element. The finite element results based on the new characteristic lengths show the excellent agreement with experimental results for the Graphite/Epoxy composite .joints.
This paper has performed an experimental study on the hybrid composite carbody of Korean tilting railway vehicle. The hybrid composite carbody has the length of 23m and is comprised of a 40mm-thick aluminium honeycomb core and 2mm-thick woven fabric carbon/epoxy face sheet. In order to evaluate the structural behavior and safety of the hybrid composite carbody, the static load tests such as vertical load, end compressive load, torsional load and 3-point support load tests have been conducted. The test was performed under Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) 17105 standard. from the tests, the maximum deflection was 12.3mm and the equivalent bending stiffness of the carbody was $0.81\times10^{14}\;kgf{\cdot}mm^2$. The maximum strain of the composite body was below $20\%$ of failure strain of the carbon/epoxy face sheet.
