The majority of fly ash pipes in thermal power stations use steel pipes. This makes frequent replacement inevitable due to severe abrasion near the hot and curved section of pipes. Recently, there have been efforts to prevent this abrasion with lining techniques using ceramic or basalt on the inner wall of the pipe. This study uses composite and anti-wear material to maximize the anti-abrasion effects on the hot section of the pipe. The thickness of the abrasion layer was determined by the abrasion ratio of material found through the experiment; the thickness of the reinforcement layer was determined by micromechanics. Experiments were conducted on epoxy resins to test for heat and abrasion. Anti-abrasion test using particle impingement was intended to recreate realistic conditions when abrasion occurs within the hot section of an actual pipe. This study analyzes the abrasion ratio obtained from both the specimen experiment and from on-site measurement and provides evidence that a combination of composites and anti-wear agent can be used to create a fly ash pipe that is lower in costs and higher in quality than what is used currently.
In this study, integrated co-bonded panels with the same configuration of hat stiffeners were fabricated and measured for ply waviness phenomenon. Total specimens consisted of 2 types; 1) the general co-bonded panel and 2) the co-bonded panel with caul plate made of carbon epoxy composite materials. The first general co-bonded panel specimen exhibited that laminate thickness on the stiffener location area was much thicker than the non-stiffener area and, there was ply waviness with 0.61 mm height and 3.29 mm length. In the second co-bonded panel specimen, the reduced waviness with 0.22 mm height and 1.37 length resulted in more than 50% improvements, which is due to the uniform pressure distribution of co-bonded interface by caul plate.

In this work, the effect of surface treatment of prepreg on the mode I fracture behavior was studied. Unidirectional (0-deg) double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were used for fracture tests. Two groups of DCB specimens were made: the first group was made of prepregs surface-treated by Ar(sup)+ ion beam under oxygen environment and the second group was made of regular prepregs. For both groups, fracture resistance curve (R-curve) was determined and compared to each other, Results showed that resistance behavior of the first group is better than that of the second group. That is, mode I fracture toughness, G(sub)Ic of the first group is 24% larger than that of the second group. SEM examination shows that the improvement of G(sub)Ic is due to the increase of interfacial strength between plies.

The work factor approach, so-called single specimen technique could be used to determine energy release rate from a single test record for unidirectional CLS specimen. In the present study, the work factor approach was extended to determine the mixed-mode fracture toughness of multi-directional graphite/epoxy laminated composites. Multi-directional CLS specimens were used for fracture tests. The stacking sequences used for the lap and the strap were $[90_2/0_2]_s/[0_4/90_4]_s$ and $[0/\pm45/0]_s/[0_2/\pm45_2/0_2]_2$, respectively. For both cases, the fracture toughness determined from the work factor approach was compared with that determined from the compliance method. It was found that both methods produced fracture toughness within a maximum 15% difference for each stacking sequence. The fractography analysis also showed that the fiber bridging occurred for$[0/\pm45/0]_s/[0_2/\pm45_2/0_2]_2$ case while it did not occur for $[90_2/0_2]_s/[0_4/90_4]_s$ case.
Polymeric composites can be subjected to a wide variety of environmemtal conditions in practical use. One of most important conditions to be considered in the stuctural design using such materials is the miisture envirnment. Thus the moisture effect on interlaminar fracture toughness $G_IC$ and $G_IIC$ of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic) composed of carbon fibers and epoxy resin is studied in this paper. Specimens were first processed in 25, 50, $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water and $25^{\circ}C$ sea water for various periods of time. After that, the water absorption and fracture toughness tests were performed under laboratory atmosphere. As result, the specimen processed in $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water indicates the highest misture absorbing capability, the second in $50^{\circ}C$ flesh water, the third in $25^{\circ}C$ sea water, and the specimen in $25^{\circ}C$ flesh water does the lowest. The interlaminar fracture toughness $G_IC$ increases, approaches to the maximum, and decreases as the immersion time increases. In case of interlaminar $G_IIC$, the value of the specimen processed in $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water turns out to be higher than others. In addition, the scanning electron micrographs(SEM) of fracture surfaces were also examined in order to explain the mechanism of fracture.
This paper presents the results of theoretical analysis and experimental test to show the size effect on the fiber strength of filament would pressure vessel. First, a series of fully scaled hoop ring tests with filament would carbon-epoxy were conducted, which exhibited a remarkable size effect on the fiber strength. Next, the failure analyses using WWLM(Weibull Weakest Link Model) and the SMFM(Sequential Multi-step Failure Model) were performed and compared to the hoop ring test data, as well as to unidirectional specimens test data from the literature. It was found that the analysis results significantly underestimated the fiber strengths compared to the test data. In this study, a modified SMFM was proposed through the modification of the length size effect. The fiber strengths from modified SMFM analysis showed good agreement with the test data.
In this study, an economical and effective processing technique to form multiple dimples on the surface of a composite part, which are known to be useful to improve aerodynamic performance and heat dissipation. Forming dimples on the surface using molds is an expensive processing because forming multiple tiny positive spheres on the surface of the mold requires much time and effort. In this study, plates with multiple round holes are utilized as a core to form dimples on the carbon/epoxy composite skin covering the core. A vacuum bagging process is used to apply pressure on the surface while curing. Composite parts which have multiple dimples on the surface can be utilized in the field which needs high aerodynamic performance and heat dissipation ability such as high speed sports car bodies.

Externally bonding fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets with an epoxy resin is an effective technique for strengthening and repairing reinforced concrete (RC) beams under flexural loads. Their resistance to electro-chemical corrosion, high strength-to-weight ratio, larger creep strain, fatigue resistance, and nonmagnetic and nonmetallic properties make carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites a viable alternative to bonding of steel plates in repair and rehabilitation of RC structures. The objective of this investigation is to study the effectiveness of CFRP sheets on ductility and flexural strength of reinforced high strength concrete (HSC) beams. This objective is achieved by conducting the following tasks: (1) flexural four-point testing of reinforced HSC beams strengthened with different amounts of cross-ply of CFRP sheets with different amount of tensile reinforcement up to failure; (2) calculating the effect of different layouts of CFRP sheets on the flexural strength; (3) Evaluating the failure modes; (4) developing an analytical procedure based on compatibility of deformations and equilibrium of forces to calculate the flexural strength of reinforced HSC beams strengthened with CFRP composites; and (5) comparing the analytical calculations with experimental results.
Triplex composite is an epoxy-bonded joint structure, which constitutes the secondary barrier in a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. Defects in the triplex composite weaken its shear strength and may cause leakage of the LNG, thus compromising the structural integrity of the LNG carrier. This paper proposes an autonomous triplex composite inspection (ATCI) system for visualizing and classifying hidden defects in the triplex composite installed inside an LNG carrier. First, heat energy is generated on the surface of the triplex composite using halogen lamps, and the corresponding heat response is measured by an infrared (IR) camera. Next, the region of interest (ROI) is traced and noise components are removed to minimize false indications of defects. After a defect is identified, it is classified as internal void or uncured adhesive and its size and shape are quantified and visualized, respectively. The proposed ATCI system allows the fully automated and contactless detection, classification, and quantification of hidden defects inside the triplex composite. The effectiveness of the proposed ATCI system is validated using the data obtained from actual triplex composite installed in an LNG carrier membrane system.
This study aims to investigate the residual strength of sandwich composites with Al honeycomb core and carbon fiber face sheets after the quasi-static indentation damage by the experimental investigation. The 3-point bending test and the edge-wise compressive strength test were used to find the mechanical properties, and the quasi-static point load was applied to introduce the simulated damage on the specimen. The damaged specimens were finally assessed by the 3-point bending test and the compressive strength test. The investigation results revealed the residual strength of the damaged specimens due to the quasi-static indentation. The both test results showed that the residual strength of the damaged specimen was decreased according to increases of the damaged depth.
