  • The composition of phytoplankton and periphyton community in Togyo reservoir was investigated. A total of phytoplankton was composed of 150 taxa, belonging to 6 phyla, 8 classes, 15 orders, 5 suborders, 31 families, 71 genera, 106 species, 14 varieties, 1 form and 29 unidentified species. The observed number of diatoms and green algae were much higher than others. Within diatoms the pennate diatoms appeared more than centric diatoms and solitary forms or colonial forms appeared more than filamentous forms in green algae. A total of epipelic algae was composed of 125 taxa, belonging to 3 phyla, 3 classes, 6 orders, 3 suborders, 13 families, 30 genera, 87 species, 29 varieties, 2 forms and 7 unidentified species. The diatoms appeared much more than others. Among those, the pennate diatoms dominated the centric diatoms in species number observed. A total of epilithic algae was composed of 114 taxa, belonging to 4 phyla, 4 classes, 11 orders, 3 suborders, 22 families, 38 genera, 79 species, 8 varieties, 1 form and 26 unidentified species. The observed number of diatoms and green algae were much higher than others. Within diatoms the pennate diatoms dominated the centric diatoms in species number observed. The dominance of pennate diatoms of the diatom community in the epipelic algal community and the epilithic algal community could be assumed that was due to the presence of raphe structure of pennate diatoms.

  • The water qualities of Namdae-stream, Yeongok-stream and Sacheon-stream were examined, by using physicochemical factors, trophic status and epilithic diatoms from May 2008 to February 2009. The physicochemical water qualities of three streams were, except for some construction areas and sites of downstream, generally good, having less concentration than BOD of $2\;mg\;L^{-1}$. As for the sites of downstream, there were ongoing pollution such as graduation of nutrients in Namdae-stream and Sacheon-stream, due to salinity of seawater and topographical feature of the closed estuary. The examination of trophic status of Namdae-stream showed mesotrophic status in all the sites. Also, eutrophication was in progress as from the upstream to the downstream of Yeongok-stream, and Sacheon-stream showed eutrophic status in all its sites. As a result of the biological water quality assessment, Namdae-stream, excluding the downstream site, came out to be $\beta\sim\alpha$-oligosaprobic, and biological water quality was good, having TDI less than 50. Some construction sites and downstream site of Namdae-stream are $\beta$-mesosaprobic, and with the TDI over 70, the biological water quality assessment came out to be polluted. Yeongok-stream is $\beta\sim\alpha$-oligosaprobic, and its biological water quality is good, having TDI less than 40. Sacheon-stream, excluding the upstream site on May 2008 and February 2009, is $\beta\sim\alpha$-mesosaprobic, and its TDI over 70 shows that it has been polluted. The correlation analysis showed a high correlation in both DAlpo and TDI. Also, biological assessment of water quality (DAIpo, TDI) showed higher correlation with TSI rather than BOD.

  • The urbanization is altering the hydrology, water quality, channel form of waterway and changing the composition of biological communities in the aquatic ecosystem. Recently, towns grew bigger by the drift of large numbers of people and the medium and small leather and dyeing industries around the Pocheon and Youngpyeong streams. The discharges of sewage were increased by them. The UII (urban intensity index) was 85 (st. P-3) and 91 (st. P-6) in the Pocheon stream and about 20 in the Youngpyeong stream. A total 141 taxa of epilithic diatoms which were composed of 2 order, 8 family, 30 genera. Dominant species were Navicula saprophila, N. subminuscula, Nitzschia palea, Gomphonema pseudoaugur in the Pocheon stream and Achnanthes alteragracillima, A. convergens, A. minutissima, N. minima, N. fonticola, N. frustulum and Cymbella minuta var. silesiaca in the Youngpyeong stream. It Showed the different composition of dominant species by the urbanization near two streams. In the relationships between UII and environmental factors such as EC, BOD, COD, TN, TP and DAIpo, UII showed the high relations $(r^2>0.8)$. It was the difference of organic pollution according to urbanization. It therefore, was higher the relative abundance and more the numbers of saprophilous taxa in the Pocheon stream than the Youngpyeong stream. The water quality of two streams by biological indicators(DAIpo) was polysaprobic state(st. P-3, P-4, P-5) in the Pocheon stream and was oligosaprobic (Y-1), mesosaprobic (Y-2, 3) and polysaprobic state (Y-4) in the Youngpyeong stream during the investigation periods.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the changes on species composition of the epilithic diatoms and the appearance of morphological abnormalities in the upper region of the Nakdong River where heavy metal inflow is observed. The samples were collected once a week for a month of September 2016 from selecting 7 sampling stations. The heavy metals of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) were not detected during the survey period, but zinc (Zn) was detected in st.4 - st.6 with the range of $0.015{\sim}0.188mg\;L^{-1}$. Metal sensitive species such as Achnanthes convergens, Cocconeis placentula, Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, Cocconeis placentula var. lineata showed high dominance in st.1 - st.3, st.7. However, metal tolerant species such as Nitzschia palea, Achnanthes minutissima showed high dominance in st.4 - st.6. It is concluded that heavy metal inflow directly affects the changes in species composition of epilithic diatoms. As a result of CCA, the characteristics of the sampling sites were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was represented the non-detected Zn sites with C. placentula, C. placentula var. euglypta, C. placentula var. lineata. Group 2 was showed the detected Zn sites with Navicula minima and Nitzschia palea. Group 3 was included st.3 - st.7 on 4th week that was stabilized the community structure. Total 8 taxa of abnormal frustules observed. This occurrence of abnormal frustules reflected the temporal and quantitative indicators of heavy metal pollution, in particular, it was confirmed that genus Fragilaria, which has a high abnormality according to heavy metal pollution, can be used as an indicator species.

  • To study the succession of epilithic diatoms on the artificial substrate, we investigated environmental factors and the diatom assemblages biweekly from Mar. 2004 to Feb. 2005 at 2 stations in the lower part of the Han River. A total of 60 taxa, representing 2 orders, 3 suborders, 8 families, 17 genera, 51 species, 7 varieties and 2 forms were identified, and mean number of species were 19 species in spring, 20 in summer, 22 in autumn and 22 in winter. Standing crops of epilithic diatoms varied extensively by months and stations; mean values of those were $3.2{\times}10^4$ cells $cm^{-2}$ in spring, $1.9{\times}10^4$ in summer, $1.7{\times}10^4$ in autumn and $1.8{\times}10^5$ in winter. Chlorophyll a concentrations were also similarly showed as variations of the diatom assemblages. Succession of the diatoms in St. 1 was as follows; Melosira varians, Fragilaria capucina, Cyclotella comta, Nitzschia palea in spring, Fragilaria capucina in summer, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima in autumn, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima and Melosira varians, Cymbella minuta in winter. In station 2, Aulacoseira granulata and Nitzschia palea dominated in spring as a pioneer in early stage of succession, Fragilaria capucina in summer, and Nitzschia palea in winter. According to Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), there showed similar to that of succession of epilithic diatoms within St. 1 and St. 2, and they were not changed by stations but seasons. Nitzschia palea belonged to saprophilous taxa correlated with nitrogen sources and suspended solids. Meanwhile, Fragilaria capucina and Cymbella minuta included in xenosaprobic taxa show correlation with DO and pH. Eurysaprobic taxa correlated with all environmental factors.

  • Aquatic ecosystem is composed of various organic and inorganic matters. Its health is essential for sustaining its members such as vegetations, mammals, birds, fishes and invertebrates. Samcheonpo stream is one of candidate streams in Sacheon area of ecological restoration. For this reason, this study conducted to build up a data base for future comparison. The results shows that biodiversity of Epilithic Diatoms and Invertebrates is below average which means that human impacts such as artificial structures and activities have been negatively related to stream health. Consequently, we suggest several key factors when ecological restoration is performed in the stream.

  • The research was to get a biological assessment on Bokha stream and Dal stream, using the physicochemical factors and the epilithic diatom from June, 2008 to March, 2009. As a result, Bokha stream showed high consistency of total phosphorus ($0.041{\sim}0.886\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), and total nitrogen ($0.336{\sim}10.532\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). Also, the concentration of BOD showed most of the sites polluted as $2{\sim}5\;mg\cdot}L^{-1}$ except for the upstream sites. However, excluding downstream sites and other few sites, Dal stream had very clean water quality having total phosphorus less than $0.06\;mg\cdot}L^{-1}$, and total nitrogen less than $2.0\;mg\cdot}L^{-1}$. Out of the 12 total sites, 98 taxa of epilithic diatoms appeared: 67 taxa from Bokha stream, and 78 taxa from Dal stream. The results of the water quality assessment showed that, Bokha stream, having TDI level over 80, was mostly $\alpha$-mesosaprobic, which indicates a severe pollution. On the other hand, Dal stream, having TDI level below 50, was examined to be xenosaprobic and $\alpha$-oligosaprobic, which indicates a clean water quality. The correlation between DAIpo and TDI measured to be high in correlation coefficent (0.83) from the result of correlation analysis. When the water quality is good, there is an inclination of getting high correlation between chemical and biological water quality assessment results. TDI, which uses numerous taxa of diatoms, showed more stability than DAIpo, which uses less amount of taxa of diatoms to get its result.

  • Attached algal community and several physico-chemicai characters were investigated at Seokjong hot spring in Chollabukdo in February and in April, 1997. The results of physico-chemicai factors are as follows : water temperatures were varied from 6.5$^{\circ}$C to 32.0$^{\circ}$C; pH range was 6.9 to 7.7; The levels of electric conductivity were 105 $\mu$mhos/cm to 477 $\mu$mhos/cm; chemical oxygen demand(COD) range was 1.5 mg/l to 21.2 mg/l; ammonia concentration was 0.20 mg/l to 8.74 mg/l; nitrate concentrations were 0.36 mg/l to 2.43 mg/l; phosphate concentration was N.D. to 0.52 mg/l; sulfur concentration was 14.6 mg/l to 66.1 mg/l. Attacched algal species were identified. Totally, 63 taxa were classified and composed of 4 phylum, 4 class, 10 order, 17 family and 31 genera. The total biomass of attacched algae was $1.036 \times 10^{7}$ cells/l that composed of $5.39 \times 10^{6}$ cells/l of blue-green algae, $4.05 \times 10^{6}$ cells/l of diatom and $0.93 \times 10^{6}$ cells/l of green algae. The succession of dominant species was Synechocystis thermalis. This could be due to the thermal wastewaters. in biotic indices tests, the values of dominance index(DI) were 0.33 to 0.67 in winter, 0.18 to 0.68 in spring. The values of diversity index(H') were 1.44 to 2.69 in winter, 1.62 to 2.89 in spring. And the values of eveness index (J) were 0.31 to 0.61 in winter, 0.37 to 0.65 in spring.

  • Purpose: In this study, a model was developed to estimate the storage in Cheonan reservoir using images taken by Sentinel-1 satellite. Method: A total of three reservoirs were studied. All three reservoirs are small reservoirs whose water level is being measured. The preprocessing of Sentinel-1 images was done using SNAP distributed by the European Space Agency(ESA), and the storage was estimated by classifying water surface by the threshold classification method. The estimated reservoir area was compared with satellite and drones images taken on the same day. The correlation was derived by comparing the estimated reservoir area with the actual measurement. Results and Conclusions: The storage values estimated by satellite image analysis showed similar values to the actual measurement data. However, because of the underestimation of the reservoir area due to green algae and Epilithic diatom of summer reservoirs and the low resolution of satellite images, it is dificult to detect reservoir area by satellite images less than 10,000㎡.
