  • Background: As the public interest in chemical substances found in daily life has increased, environmental health education content has been developed and related studies have been conducted. However, there is still insufficient research on methodologies for environmental health education. Objectives: This study aimed to explore risk communication strategies by focusing on N-nitrosamines in rubber balloons. Methods: In this study, two different health messages were composed: a gain-framed message emphasizing the advantages of practicing the health behavior and a loss-framed message emphasizing the negative consequences of not practicing the health behavior. The effect of the message containing risk information was evaluated by measuring the health beliefs and health behavior potential for female caregivers. As the Environmental Health Act defines a child as "a person under the age of 13," a total of 131 women with children under the age of 13 were studied. Results: The age, awareness, and interest of the participants in the gain frame group and these in the loss frame group were similar. In terms of message framing effect, the gain-framed message was more effective in terms of health belief and potential health behavior than was the loss-framed message. As a result of an independent t-test, among the six variables of health belief model the message effect was statistically significant at the level of p<0.05 in three variables: perceived severity (t=2.287, df=129, p=0.024), self-efficacy (t=2.123, df=129, p=0.036), and health behavior potential (t=2.094, df=129, p=0.038). Conclusions: This study presented a direction for effective environmental health education by studying the effects of risk communication messages based on scientific evidence. It is necessary to extend the scope of environmental health education research by expanding research into various household products.

Methods: The population of this study was from grade 1 to 6 elementary school pupils in Ulsan city, Korea. Five elementary schools were randomly selected from Ulsan City. Seven hundred and twenty-eight responses from the five schools were analyzed (seventy-two were excluded). A self-administered questionnaire measuring sociodemographic variables, Knowledge of environment related disease(atopic dermatitis, asthma etc), as well as educational experience and necessity of environmental health education was analyzed. The survey results were analyzed using SPSS-PC Program 12.0 and the following results by implementing Frequency Analysis, Cross-tabulation Analysis and ANOVA are as follows. Result: Pupils of lower grades more informed than those of higher grades about atopic dermatitis. Among asthma sufferers, many responded that symptoms occurred or improved during the lower grades of elementary school. In terms of the lifestyles of patients with atopic dermatitis or asthma, female pupils, especially those in the lower grades, tended to make changes in their daily habits based on their disease. Also, parents tended to intervene/mediate more in the dietary habits and personal hygiene habits of lower-grade pupils compared to their higher-grade counterparts. Personal hygiene education is currently not provided in schools, and upper-grade pupils have more experience with personal hygiene education compared to lower grade pupils. 430 (59.0%) of pupils replied that education about personal hygiene is necessary in their curriculum. 490 (67.3%) of elementary pupils are aware of the close connection between education in hygiene and human health. When asked if education in hygiene should also be undertaken by teachers and parents, 406 (55.7%) students said that it should be done. Conclusions: Developing a concrete health education program and raising instructors' awareness of the necessity for education in hygiene. Placement of professionals in the personal hygiene education field, is important to provide good health education for elementary school pupils.

  • On the basis of total page, the coverage rate of education of safety and health in textbooks of elementary school was approximately 10%. In middle school, the contents of safety education were addressed mainly in subject of chemistry below about 5% of coverage rate whereas the contents of health education appeared mainly in subject of athletics below about 15% of coverage rate. Similarly, the contents of safety education and health education in textbooks of high school were indicated mainly in the subjects of chemistry and athletics, showing below about 5% and 30% of coverage rate, respectively. In conclusion, the education level of safety and health in textbooks was generally lower compared to other contents. The coverage rate of safety education was relatively lower than health education, which implicates that extensive contents related to safety education are needed to be added to textbooks in order to establish preliminary attitude for preventing workplace accident.

  • Background: A common genetic variant rs3757318, located in intron of C6orf97, was firstly identified to be associated with breast cancer (BC) risk by a genome-wide association (GWA) study. However, subsequent validation studies with different ethnicities have yielded conflicting results. Materials and Methods: We performed a meta-analysis to synthesize all available data for evaluating the precise effect of this variant on BC susceptibility. Results: A total of 8 articles containing 11 studies with 62,891 cases and 65,635 controls were included in this meta-analysis. When compared to the G allele, the rs3757318-A allele was significantly associated with BC risk with the pooled OR of 1.21 (95% CI=1.15 - 1.29, P<0.001) but with obvious between-study heterogeneity (P=0.040). Stratified analysis suggested that diversity of ethnicity along with control source may explain part of the heterogeneity. Similarly, significant associations were also identified in heterozygote, homozygote, dominant and recessive genetic models. Sensitivity and publication bias analyses indicated robust stability of our results. Conclusions: Our present meta-analysis demonstrated that the variant rs3757318 is associated with increased BC risk. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to clarify the underlying biological mechanisms.

  • Background: Education on environmental health in Korea was begun with establishment of the Graduate School of Public Health at Seoul National University 1959. The sanitary movement started in Europe and the Americas in the 19th century and was introduced to Korea in the 1960s under the name of sanitary engineering. The field enlarged along with title changes. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the previous and present status of the environmental and public health fields in Korea. Methods: This study utilized documents published by the South Korean Ministry of Education and Korean Education Development Institute (KEDI) from 2015 to 2020, the homepages of universities with their history and regulations, and other related published documents. Results: Public health was fundamentally enlarged as an expert field in Korea with the establishment of the Graduate School of Public Health at Seoul National University in 1959. There are 102 departments relevant to the environmental field at two-year colleges, 220 at universities, and 175 at graduate schools. There are 89 departments relevant to the public health field at colleges, 96 at universities, and 160 at graduate schools as of 2020. The term "environment" in the title of a department is used as much as 80~93.1%, but "public health" in titles is used in 47.7~61.5%. Fifty percent of graduate schools of public health award specialty degrees other than master of public health. Conclusions: Although environment and public health fields have been expanded in universities in Korea, various specialty fields were included in university and graduate school. It is important to consider the coping plan with the trend.
