Vibration behaviors of a damaged bridge under moving vehicular loads

  • A large number of bridges were built several decades ago, and most of which have gradually suffered serious deteriorations or damage due to the increasing traffic loads, environmental effects, and inadequate maintenance. However, very few studies were conducted to investigate the vibration behaviors of a damaged bridge under moving vehicles. In this paper, the vibration behaviors of such vehicle-bridge system are investigated in details, in which the effects of the concrete cracks and bridge surface roughness are particularly considered. Specifically, two vehicle models are introduced, i.e., a simplified four degree-of-freedoms (DOFs) vehicle model and a more complex seven DOFs vehicle model, respectively. The bridges are modeled in two types, including a single-span uniform beam and a full scale reinforced concrete high-pier bridge, respectively. The crack zone in the reinforced concrete bridge is considered by a damage function. The bridge and vehicle coupled equations are established by combining the equations of motion of both the bridge and vehicles using the displacement relationship and interaction force relationship at the contact points between the tires and bridge. The numerical simulations and verifications show that the proposed modeling method can rationally simulate the vibration behaviors of the damaged bridge under moving vehicles; the effect of cracks on the impact factors is very small and can be neglected for the bridge with none roughness, however, the effect of cracks on the impact factors is very significant and cannot be neglected for the bridge with roughness.

The Characterization of Surface Roughness of the Drilled Shaft into Rock (암반에 근입된 현장타설말뚝의 벽면거칠기 특성)

  • The domestic design method for the shaft resistance of drilled shafts into a bedrock is based on the empirical method, where the uniaxial compressive strength of rock specimen is utilized for calculation of the shaft resistance. This method has uncertainties in prediction of capacity of drilled shafts and result in uneconomic engineering design. Recently a new improved design method was suggested, which reflects important factors that affect the strength of pile sockets. Socket roughness is one of the significant factors influencing the shaft resistance of drilled shaft socketed into rock. In this paper roughness information for the shaft resistance design of socket pile was suggested on the basis of statistical analysis of data measured from wall surface in the bore holes of drilled shafts.

  • Electro-Discharge machining (EDM) is a thermal process comprising a complex metal removal mechanism. This method works by forming of a plasma channel between the tool and the workpiece electrodes leading to the melting and evaporation of the material to be removed. EDM is considered especially suitable for machining complex contours with high accuracy, as well as for materials that are not amenable to conventional removal methods. However, several phenomena can arise and adversely affect the surface integrity of EDMed workpieces. These have to be taken into account and studied in order to optimize the process. Recently, artificial neural networks (ANN) have emerged as a novel modeling technique that can provide reliable results and readily, be integrated into several technological areas. In this paper, we use an ANN, namely, the multi-layer perceptron and the back propagation network (BPNN) to predict the mean surface roughness of electro-discharge machined surfaces. The comparison of the derived results with experimental findings demonstrates the promising potential of using back propagation neural networks (BPNNs) for getting a reliable and robust approximation of the Surface Roughness of Electro-discharge Machined Components.

Soil Moisture Content Estimation Using Remote Sensing Technique (원격 측정 기법을 이용한 토양 함수비의 측정)

  • Remote sensing technique is based on the estimation of land surface characteristics from the measurement of the emitted radiation from the earth. The hydrologically related parameters studied using this approach include surface temperature, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, precipitation and snow. This study introduces a method for estimating moisture content of a bare soil from the observed and simulated brightness temperature. In a bare soil, microwave emission depends on moisture content, soil temperature, and surface roughness. The method is based on a radiative transfer model with some modifications of Fresnel reflection coefficient to take into account the effect of surface roughness. One smooth bare field and two fields with different surface roughness are prepared for the study. The results indicate that the effect of surface roughness is to increase the soil's brightness temperature and to reduce the slope of regression between brightness temperature and moisture contents.

  • Recently, many researchers and industry are looking for ways to decrease the use of lubricants because of economical and environmental reasons. One of the lubrication technologies is the MQL method. This study presents a research of MQL and Wet milling processes of Al 6061 material. For this experiment, the test specimen is suggested, and various machining conditions are applied. And, shape of micro-pattern which has been recently spotlighted is included in the test specimen. In order to compare MQL with Wet machining, several milling experiments were carried out, varying feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, etc. Finally, the surface roughness results of machining tests according to the process conditions were measured. It is expected that the results of machining experiments can be used to predict the surface roughness of various MQL milling processes.

  • From a water-environmental point of view, with a change of understanding and concern about vegetation, it changes that vegetation acts as stability of channel and bed, providing habitats and feed for fauna, and means improving those with appreciation of the beautiful but resistant factor to the flow So, it becomes important concern and study subjects that turbulent structure by vegetation, shear stress and transport as well as roughness and average velocity by vegetation. But from a hydraulic point of view, vegetation causes resistance to the flow and can increase the risk of flooding, Therefore, this thesis concern the flow characteristics in vegetated open channels. According to the experimental results, $z_0$ was on an average $0.4h_p$ in a vegetated open channel. So, the elevation corresponding to zero velocity in a vegetated channel was the middle of roughness element. The limit for logarithmically distributed profile over the roughness element was from $z_0$ to $0.80h_{over}$ for a vegetated channel. Among the existing theory, the method of Kouwen et al.(1969), Haber(1982), and El-Hakim and Salama(1992) except Stephan(2001) gave a very good value compared to the measured velocity profile.

Monitoring of Dry Cutting and Applications of Cutting Fluid for Ball End Milling

  • For economical and environmental reasons, the aim of this research is hence to monitor the cutting conditions with the dry cutting, the wet cutting, and the mist cutting to obtain the proper cutting condition for the plain carbon steel with the ball end milling based on the consideration of the surface roughness of the machined parts, the life of the cutting tools, the use of the cutting fluids, the density of the particles of cutting fluids dispersed in the working area, and the cost of cutting. The experimentally obtained results of the relation between tool wear and surface roughness, the relation between tool wear and cutting force, and the relation between cutting force and surface roughness are correspondent with the same trend. The phenomena of surface roughness and tool wear can be explained by the in-process cutting forces. The models of the tool wear with the cutting conditions and the cutting times are proposed to estimate the tool cost for the different cooling strategies based on the experimental data using the multiple regression technique. The cutting cost is calculated from the costs of cutting tool and cutting fluid. The mist cutting gives the lowest cutting cost as compared to others. The experimentally obtained proper cutting condition is determined based on the experimental results referring to the criteria.

Analysis of permeability in rock fracture with effective stress at deep depth

  • In this study, the application of conventional cubic law to a deep depth condition was experimentally evaluated. Moreover, a modified equation for estimating the rock permeability at a deep depth was suggested using precise hydraulic tests and an effect analysis according to the vertical stress, pore water pressure and fracture roughness. The experimental apparatus which enabled the generation of high pore water pressure (< 10 MPa) and vertical stress (< 20 MPa) was manufactured, and the surface roughness of a cylindrical rock sample was quantitatively analyzed by means of 3D (three-dimensional) laser scanning. Experimental data of the injected pore water pressure and outflow rate obtained through the hydraulic test were applied to the cubic law equation, which was used to estimate the permeability of rock fracture. The rock permeability was estimated under various pressure (vertical stress and pore water pressure) and geometry (roughness) conditions. Finally, an empirical formula was proposed by considering nonlinear flow behavior; the formula can be applied to evaluations of changes of rock permeability levels in deep underground facility such as nuclear waste disposal repository with high vertical stress and pore water pressure levels.

Analysis of Environmental Factors Affecting the Machining Accuracy (가공정밀도에 영향을 미치는 환경요소 분석)

  • In this paper, to analyze the types of surface morphology error according to factors that cause machining error, the experiments were conducted in the ultra-precision diamond machine using a diamond tool. The factors causing machining error were classified into the pressure variation of compressed air, external shock, tool errors, machining conditions (rotational speed and feed rate), tool wear, and vibration. The pressure variation of compressed air causes a form accuracy error with waviness. An external shock causes a ring-shaped surface defect. The installed diamond tool for machining often has height error, feed-direction position error, and radius size error. The types of form accuracy error according to the tool's errors were analyzed by CAD simulation. The surface roughness is dependent on the tool radius, rotational speed, and feed rate. It was confirmed that the surface roughness was significantly affected by tool wear and vibration, and the surface roughness of Rz 0.0105 ㎛ was achieved.

A Study on Roughness Measurement of Polished Surfaces Using Reflected Laser Beam Image (레이저빔 반사 화상을 이용한 연마면 거칠기 측정법에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the principle and experimental results of a non-contact surface roughness measurement by means of screen projected pattern of lase beam reflected from a polished surface. In the reflected laser beam pattern especially from a fine surface like ground or polished one, light intensity varies from the center fo the image to its boundary as the Gaussian distribution. The standard deviation of a light intensity distribution is assumed to be a good non-contact estimator for measuring the surface roughnes, because the light reflectivity is known to be well related with the surface roughness. This method doesn't need to discriminate between the specularly reflected light and the diffusely reflected one, whereas the scattered laser intensity method must do. Nor it needs to adjust the change of light intensity caused by environmental lights or specimen materials. Reflected laser beam pattern narrowly spreads out in the vertical direction to tiny scratches on the polished surface due to abrasives. The deeper the scratch the more the dispersion, which means the rougher surface. The standard deviation of the pattern is nearly in proportion to the surface roughness. Measurement errors by this method are shown to be below 10 percent compared with those obtained by a common contact method. The inclination of measuring unit from the normal axis causes the measurement errors up to 10 percent for an angle of 4 degree. Therefore the proposed method can be used as an on-the-machine quick roughness estimator within 10 percent measurement error.
