According to a previous study, talc as a coating pigment can improve the viscosity and the water retention of coating color, the compressibility of coating layer, and hence gravure printability. Talc is also well known for its larger particle size than other pigments, which implies that less binder may be need due to its smaller specific surface area. This study investigated the possibility of reducing binder content for matte grade paper. Coating color was prepared with the Cotalc-2000, which showed the best properties in the previous study. The binder content was varied and the effect of binder content on the physical properties of coated paper and the gravure printability was investigated. It was shown that binder content could be reduced when talc was used as a coating pigment. The reduction in binder content did not influence gloss, roughness and the print density of coated paper but showed improvement in paper porosity, compressibility and missing dot.
Two main sources of data, meteorological data and land surface characteristics, are essential to effectively run a distributed rainfall-runoff model. The specification and averaging of the land surface characteristics in a suitable way is crucial to obtaining accurate runoff output. Recent advances in remote sensing techniques are often being used to derive better representations of these land surface characteristics. Due to the mismatch in scale between digital land cover maps and numerical grid sizes, issues related to upscaling or downscaling occur regularly. A specific method is typically selected to average and represent the land surface characteristics. This paper examines the amount of flooding by applying the FLO-2D routing model, where vegetation heterogeneity is manipulated using the Manning's roughness coefficient. Three different upscaling methods, arithmetic, dominant, and aggregation, were tested. To investigate further, the rainfall-runoff model with FLO-2D was facilitated in Yongdam catchment and heavy rainfall events during wet season were selected. The results show aggregation method provides better results, in terms of the amount of peak flow and the relative time taken to achieve it. These rwsults suggest that the aggregation method, which is a reasonably realistic description of area-averaged vegetation nature and characteristics, is more likely to occur in reality.
This study is concerned with preparation of chlorine resistant (CR) thin layer composite (TFC) membranes. The novel method for making CR membranes from commercially available RO membranes is based on sol-gel condensation of trialkoxyalkylsilane derivatives. The silane coupling agents used in this study have different number of alkyl carbon chain group (methyltriethoxysilane; METES and octyltriethoxysilane; OCTES). The OCTES composite membranes have a significant tolerance to chlorine compared to commercial polyamide RO membrane or METES composite membranes. The surface properties of membranes were examined to explain a significant difference of chlorine tolerance between OCTES composite membrane and the other two membranes. In this study, we tried several surface analyses to explain difference of chlorine tolerance. The element composition results of surface analysis by EDX confirmed that both silane fixed on polyamide firmly, The surface roughness and contact angle results showed long chain alkyl group of OCTES enhancing hydrophobicity considerably than METES. The hydrophobicity plays an important role in chlorine resistance of membrane.
The aim of this study is that a theoretical formula for estimating the one-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient is derived based on a transverse distribution equation for the depth averaged stream-wise velocity in open channel. In "Part I. Theoretical equation for stream-wise velocity" which is the former volume of this article, the velocity distribution equation is derived analytically based on the Shiono-Knight Method (SKM). And then incorporating the velocity distribution equation into a triple integral formula which was proposed by Fischer (1968), the one-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient can be derived theoretically in "Part II. Longitudinal dispersion coefficient" which is the latter volume of this article. The proposed equations for the velocity distribution and the longitudinal dispersion coefficient are verified by using observed data set. As a result, the non-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficient is inversely proportional to square of the Manning's roughness coefficient and the non-dimensional transverse dispersion coefficient, and is directly proportional to square of the aspect ratio (channel width to depth).
In this study, the high-resolution numerical simulations considering detailed anthropogenic heat, albedo, emission and roughness length are analyzed by using single layer Urban Canopy Model (UCM) in Weather Research Forecast (WRF). For this, improved urban parameter data for Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) was collected from global data. And then the parameters were applied to WRF-UCM model after it was processed into 2-dimensional topographical data. The 6 experiments were simulated by using the model with each parameter and verified against observation from Automated Weather Station (AWS) and flux tower for the temperature and sensible heat flux. The data for sensible heat flux of flux towers on Jungnang and Bucheon, the temperature of AWS on Jungnang, Gangnam, Bucheon and Neonggok were used as verification data. In the case of summer, the improvement of simulation by using detailed anthropogenic heat was higher than the other experiments in sensible flux simulation. The results of winter case show improved in all simulations using each advanced parameters in temperature and sensible heat flux simulation. Improvement of urban parameters in this study are possible to reflect the heat characteristics of urban area. Especially, detailed application of anthropogenic heat contributed to the enhancement of predicted value for sensible heat flux and temperature.

The effect of 1,3-dioxolane on the structural development in the optical polycarbonate film was studied. The 1,3-dioxolane was used as an environmental friendly solvent for manufacturing solution-cast polycarbonate film instead of methylene chloride. The evaporation rate in film drying process decreased due to the high boiling temperature of 1,3-dioxolane. This caused the crystallization in the polycarbonate film. As a result, The increase of crystallinity and roughness led to the decrease of light transmissivity. It was also found that the lowering of mechanical properties in polycarbonate film was attributed to the morphological change due to the solvent evaporation rate in film drying process.

In this work, we evaluated the Al2O3 film, which was deposited by atomic layer deposition, degraded by exposure to harsh environments. The Al2O3 films deposited by atomic layer deposition have long been used as a gas diffusion barrier that satisfies barrier requirements for device reliability. To investigate the barrier and mechanical performance of the Al2O3 film with increasing temperature and relative humidity, the properties of the degraded Al2O3 film exposed to the harsh environment were evaluated using electrical calcium test and tensile test. As a result, the water vapor transmission rate of Al2O3 films stored in harsh environments has fallen to a level that is difficult to utilize as a barrier film. Through water vapor transmission rate measurements, it can be seen that the water vapor transmission rate changes can be significant, and the environment-induced degradation is fatal to the Al2O3 thin films. In addition, the surface roughness and porosity of the degraded Al2O3 are significantly increased as the environment becomes severer. the degradation of elongation is caused by the stress concentration at valleys of rough surface and pores generated by the harsh environment. Becaused the harsh envronment-induced degradation convert amorphous Al2O3 to crystalline structure, these encapsulation properties of the Al2O3 film was easily degraded.

This paper mainly deals with the performance evaluation of 33 asphalt sections of Korea Expressway Corporation Test Road (KECTR) during the past four years. Since the construction of the KECTR in December 2002, key performance indicators of asphalt pavements have been collected five times with an Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN), and have been analyzed for permanent deformation, surface distress, and road roughness. Linear viscoelastic characteristics of four dense graded HMAs used in KECTR were investigated with a series of complex modulus test. The effect of air void in HMAs on dynamic modulus was investigate at two air void contents for a surface course HMA (19 mm Nominal Maximum Size of Aggregate). Layer densification due to traffic was estimated from air void contents of field cored samples, and was correlated with pavement distresses and performances. One of findings of this study was that both permanent deformation and cracking were suspectible to pavement temperatures, rather than traffic. However, it was found that road roughness was mostly affected by traffic loading.

The structural stability as well as economical efficiency of the wind sensitive structures are strongly dependant on accurate evaluation of the design wind speed. Present study demonstrates a useful wind data obtained at the wind monitoring tower in the Kwangyang Suspension Bridge site. Moreover the Measure-Correlate-Predict (MCP) method has been applied to estimate the long-term wind data at the bridge site based on the wind data at the local weather station. The measured data indicate that the turbulent intensities and roughness exponents are strongly affected by the wind direction and surrounding topography. The new design wind speed based on MCP method is 20m/s lower than that at the original estimation, and the resulting design wind load is only 36% of the old prediction. The field measurement of wind data is recommended to ensure the economical and secure design of the wind sensitive structures because the measured wind data reveal much different from the estimated one due to local topography.

In recent years, NF (nanofiltration) membrane has been receiving great attention for hardness removal and has begun to replace traditional lime soda ash softening process, particularly in Florida, USA, mainly due to less sludge production and easy operation. This study aimed to provide detailed surface characteristics of various commercial NF membranes by performing sophisticated surface analysis, which would help more fundamentally understand the performance of NF membranes. More specifically, a total of 7 NF membranes from top NF/RO manufacturers in the world were examined for basic performance tests, surface analysis, and fouling potential assessment. The results demonstrated that NF membranes are classified into two groups in terms of surface zeta potential; they are highly negatively charged ones, and neutral and/or less negatively charged ones. Their hydrophobicities, measured by contact angle, varied from hydrophilic to slightly hydrophobic ones. The AFM measurements showed various surface roughness, ranging from 23 nm (smooth) to 162 nm (rough) of average peak height. Lab-scale fouling experiments were performed using feedwater obtained from conventional water treatment plants in the province of Korea, and their results attempted to correlate to surface characteristics of NF membranes. However, unlike typical RO membranes, no clear correlation was found in this study, indicating that fouling mechanisms of NF membrane may be different from those of typical RO membranes, and both cake deposition and pore blocking mechanisms should be considered simultaneously.
