With increasing population densities in cities, underground facilities and entertainment locations are proliferating at a rapid pace in efforts to maximize the use of land. The purpose of this study is to evaluate CO concentration level of subway stations having underground platforms in Busan Metropolitan City, from September to November 2000, over seven times. The places of inquiry include Yonsan-dong station, Somyon station, Busan station, Nampo-dong station and Dusil station. The samplings were conducted at three points of each station, i.e. gates, ticket gates, and platforms. The component of CO concentration is the main elements of indoor air quality evaluation. The total concentrations and average concentrations of CO were the higher at the Somyon station. The distribution of CO concentrations at each station, generally was higher at gate than ticket gates and platforms. The I/O ratios(I-platforms, 0-gates) were expressed highly than 1 at the Yonsan-dong station, Busan station, Nampo-dong station and were lower than 1 at the others.
Preliminary ecological environmental assessments including physico-chemical constituents, water quality, fish fauna analysis, physical habitat health, and ecological health assessment were conducted as a primary step for Jeungchon micro-habitat ecosystem restoration in 2012. Water chemistry analysis of conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll-a and etc. indicated that there were no significant differences(p < 0.05) among 6 sites between the headwaters and downstream. Multi-metric model analysis of Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index(QHEI) showed that brooklets were at "good condition" as a mean QHEI of 158.7(n = 6) and the longitudinal differences of the model values between the sites were minor(QHEI range: 153 - 165). Total fish species and the number of individuals were 12 and 481, respectively, and dominant species were Zacco platypus(49.5%) and Zacco koreanus(36.8%). Tolerance guild analysis showed that the proportion of sensitive species($S_S$) had a negative linear function[$S_S=86.35-0.31(D_H)$; $R^2$ = 0.892, p < 0.01] with a distance from the headwaters, while the proportion of tolerant species($T_S$) had a positive linear function($R^2$ = 0.950, F = 90.28, p < 0.001) with the distance. Trophic feeding guild analysis showed that the proportion of insectivore species($I_n$) had a negative linear function($R^2$ = 0.934, p < 0.01) with a distance from the headwaters, while the proportion of omnivore species($O_m$) had a positive linear function($R^2$ = 0.958, p < 0.001) with the distance. Index of Biological Integrity(IBI) model, based on fish assemblages, showed a "fair condition" as a mean IBI of 23(n = 6), and there was a distinct differences of ecological health between the headwaters(S1 = 30; "good condition") and the downstreams(S6 = 14; "poor condition"). Overall, the preliminary environmental impact assessments suggest that water quality, physical habitat conditions(QHEI model), and ecological health(IBI model) were maintained well, even if the state was not an excellent conditions.

In this study, long-term measurement data were applied to the LOADEST model and used as an analysis tool to identify and interpret trends in pollution load. The LOADEST model is a regression equation-based pollution load estimation program developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to estimate the change in the pollution load of rivers according to flow rate and time and provides 11 regression equations for pollution load evaluation. As a result of simulating the Gwangjuchen2, Pungyeongjeongchen, and Pyeongdongchen in the Yeongbon B unit basin in the middle and upper reaches of the Yeongsan River with the LOADEST model using water quality and flow measurement data, lower values were observed for the Gwangjuchen2 and Pyeongdongchen, whereas the Pungyeongjeongchen had higher values. This was judged to be due to the characteristics of the LOADEST model related to data continuity. According to the parameters estimated by the LOADEST model, pollutant trends were affected by increases in the flow. In addition, variability increased with time, and BOD and T-P were affected by the season. Thus, the LOADEST model can contribute to water quality management as an analytical tool for long-term data monitoring.

This study was conducted to develop detailed evaluation indicator as a way for evaluating sustainable urban ecosystem health focused on ecological urban elements from an eco-cultural point of view after the appearance of Eco-cultural City to meet various needs. And this study was also conducted to search for ways to utilize the detailed evaluation indicator like institutionalization. Eco-cultural City was defined as a city where ecological environment and cultural environment coexist and was aimed to derive applicable planning indicators in Korea. For this, FGI was executed, planning indicators were derived, and suitability was examined. The weights were calculated based on the selected indicators through AHP expert survey. After getting the result of FGI, experts reviewed the adequacy of definition from Eco-cultural City and its necessity, and the applicability of planning indicators was examined with evaluation of suitability. As a result of evaluating suitability, it was judged that 41 indicators based on an overall average of 4 areas were relatively high on suitability and also important among sectors. As for the analysis result, the priority order in multistage classification was as followed : harmony between human and environment(B) 0.349, environmental resources(A) 0.266, city environment and quality of culture(C) 0.208, and role division and citizen participation(D) 0.177. In the second level of relative importance, environment protection and infra in the role and citizen participation section was the highest, 0.449, harmonization policy and system in calculating weights was the highest.
In South Korea, Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) has been enforced since 2004 to restore and manage water quality in the watersheds. However, the appraisal of TMDL in South Korea has lots of weaknesses to establish the plan for recovery of water quality because it just evaluates the target water quality during the particular flow duration interval. In the United States, Load Duration Curve (LDC) method bas been widely used in the TMDL to evaluate the water quality and pollutant loads considering variation of stream flow. In a recent study, web-based Load Duration Curve system was developed to create the LDC automatically and provide the convenience of use. In this study, web-based Load Duration Curve system was applied in the Gapyeongcheon watershed using the daily flow and 8-day interval water quality data, and Q-L Rating Curve was used to evaluate the water quality and pollutant load in the watershed, also. As a result of study, water quality and pollutant load in Gapyeongcheon watershed were met with water quality standard and allocated load in the all flow durations. Web-based Load Duration Curve system could be applied to the appraisal of South Korean TMDL because it can be used to judge the impaired flow duration and build up the plan of load reduction, and it could enhance the publicity. But, web-based Load Duration Curve system should be enhanced through addition of load assessment tools such as Q-L rating curve to evaluate water quality and pollutant load objectively.
Haloacetic acids (HAAs) concentrations have been observed to decreased at drinking water distribution system extremities. This decrease is associated with microbiological degradation by pipe wall biofilm. The objective of this study was to evaluate HAAs degradation in a drinking water system in the presence of a biofilm and to identify the factors that influence this degradation. Degradation of monochloroacetic acid (MCAA), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) was observed in a simulated distribution system. The results obtained showed that different parameters came into play simultaneously in the degradation of HAAs, including retention time, water temperature, biomass, and composition of organic matter. Seasonal variations had a major effect on HAAs degradation and biomass quantity (ATP concentration) was lower by 25% in the winter compared with the summer.

The groundwater system of the Cheonggyecheon watershed is very complicated because it is influenced by many factors such as pumping out, groundwater leakages into subway stations, civil use of groundwater, and leaking water from water supply and sewage lines. So the characterization and evaluation of tile groundwater flow and contaminant transport in the Cheonggyecheon water system is quite a difficult task. The purpose of this study is to analyze of the influence to the 'groundwater' below the Cheonggyecheon watershed by the 'surface water' on the Cheonggyecheon stream after the restoration. We have so far collected groundwater quality data, hydrogeologic aquifer parameters, and tile amount of leakages into subway stations and its influence on the groundwater system of the Cheonggyecheon. Results show that groundwater level was influenced by the direction and depth of a 녀bway station. This study will continue to monitor groundwater quality, a water level fluctuation relation between rainfall and groundwater recharge for further investigation of the groundwater flow system in Cheonggyecheon.

In South Korea, the enact of Korean Coast Guard Act-1 manages physical and chemical oil-dispersants. Oil snare, which is made of polypropylene, is newly added to the aforementioned act, and it has advantage on the ease of recovery compare to other adsorbents. This study synthesized bunker B-oil with diesel-oil and bunker C-oil to perform an adsorption test based on three samples which were manufactured in South Korea. As a result, adsorption test revealed 5.2 g/g more adsorption than the previous results from the act. Additional toluene test revealed that all the samples satisfied 90.0%, however coloured samples could release its pigment on the marine environment. Thus, colorless samples are recommended on the risk management of marine accidents. The study on the basic direction of the calculation of the test items and the standard value for the quality control of the oil snare was also carried out.
