  • Water leakage could be caused deterioration of environmental conditions, user condition, reduction of life span and long term safety in underground concrete structure. Many materials and construction method to repair on these problems have been developed, however, it is not proper to successful repair or raise problem of increasing repair cost However, there are many limitations as practical appraisal methods due to different view of reliability for test methods. Because, it was not enough that the technical objectivity could be lack and also application of environmental condition is inadequate. In this paper, we suggest varied test methods divided to appraisal for property of matter, construction, manufacturing, specification and maintenance, friendly environmental condition. It could be more practical as a objective standard considering various angles. In summery, it should be subdivided and differentiated to accomplish proper application and to select proper materials and construction method for repair even if the synthetical condition is very complicated.

  • Recently, there has been increasing concern for green growth and environment-friendly construction work is being revitalized; hereupon this study is going to understand the present situation of environment -friendly features of the apartment house through the case study of environment-friendly apartment house in and outside the country, and to suggest the developmental direction of the domestic apartment house. First, this study is to look into respective environment-friendly factors by considering the theoretical background of environment-friendliness and certification of environment-friendly structures, and analyzing the cases of apartment house in and outside the country. This study selected as the survey target the apartment buildings located at 5 places which were completed after 2003 and obtained the domestic 'Green Building Certification Criteria'[hereinafter, GBCC] in metropolitan areas in domestic cases and the survey target to the apartment building at 5 places which were completed after 2003 and obtained the US 'Leadership in Energy and Environment Design' [hereinafter, LEED] in overseas cases. For comparative analysis of each case, this study evaluated each case twice using GBCC and LEED to be more objective in evaluation. As a result, it was found that domestic cases focused on nature-friendly landscaping and the use of the certified products while overseas cases focused on minimizing the environmental impact such as raising the energy reduction ratio and reducing water resources and consumption of resources. Accordingly, there seems to be a need for practical energy-reduction & resources-saving scheme in order for domestic environment-friendly apartment buildings to reach the level of the LEED certification.

  • As environmental matters such as Green House Effect rise, many construction industries are putting an effort on minimizing environmental impact in terms of building life cycle throughout the world. However, in South Korea, evaluating the eco-friendly building based on life cycle assessment has been facing an academic ostracism while the most studies are focusing on assessing the 6 environmental impact assessments of passive apartment based on life cycle assessment. The theoretical consideration of the life cycle assessment and environmental impact category were performed and the direction of the study was set up. Also, existing apartment and passive apartment, which had same structure and same type were chosen and building materials per unit area were compared to find out the difference environmental impact for building life cycle. As a result, passive apartment was rated as low level among the 6 environmental impacts. Also, effect of building material on passive apartment was more important than its operational stage.

  • School is an excellent place for children to loam environment-conscious behavior and for teachers to bring up environmental education. School has a plenty of teaching materials such as school building, pond, school forest, waste and school supplies. Especially, the environmental education for and with school supplies can be very effective, as it is mostly the first products for children to learn the buying and consumption in their daily life. In this study we conducted a survey on the environmental attitude of two groups of 5th graders towards environmentally friendly school supplies. The experimental group received environmental education on school supplies and the control group did not. The survey results showed that almost 50% of the children did not consider the environmental impact, but rather the price, design and function when buying the school supplies. However, more than 70% of children were willing to use the recycled school products, implying that they are aware of environmental Issues and want to contribute to the preservation and improvement of the environment. The children recognized paper/notebooks and paints/crayons as the major environmental problems. Writing appliances such as pens, pencils, highlighters and markers were also considered as environmental concerns, since most of them are made of plastics and they are not easily biodegradable nor refillable. We also exemplify a lesson-plan for environmental education program on school supplies and make suggestions to encourage the use of those eco-friendly school materials.

The results of this study were as follows; Firstly, good examples of container architectures such as student housing, social service center, temporary medical facility and cruise terminal in Europe suggested the potential of domestic applicability in various purposes and development. Secondly, various types of freight container, building container and module frame system should be developed with their reprocessing environment. Thirdly, it is necessary for us to develop ISO type(20~40ft) container and standard plan with interior and storage design reflecting demands of residents. Finally, the use of container module will be an environmental-friendly alternative for its modularity and reusability, so it should be used as it is without severe deformation. The development of environmental friendly energy sources such as hydro and solar power is necessary for domestic container architecture as well. The container design should include the use of high quality of exterior finishing materials and the plan of aesthetical color planning to make the building a local landmark.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to the wastewater treatment systems employed in the Living Building Challenge. Methods: I reviewed a range of information on decentralized wastewater treatment technologies such as composting toilets, constructed wetlands, recirculating biofilters, membrane bioreactors, and MFCs. Results: The Living Building Challenge is a set of standards to make buildings more eco-friendly using renewable resources and self-treating water systems. Although there are various decentralized wastewater treatment technologies available, MFCs have been considered an attractive future option for a decentralized system as used in the Living Building Challenge. MFCs can directly convert substrate energy to electricity with high conversion efficiency at ambient and even at low temperatures. MFCs do not require energy input for aeration if using open-air cathodes. Moreover, MFCs have the potential for widespread application in locations lacking water and electrical infrastructure Conclusions: This paper demonstrated the feasibility of MFCs as a novel decentralized wastewater treatment system employed in the Living Building Challenge.
