  • The metal complex dyes that are mainly used for good color fastness in dyeing amide fibers with highly concentrated colors usually contain toxic chromium. The remaining dye in th dyebath containing $Cr^{6+}$ causes not only environmental problems but also serious damages to human health. In this study, we applied reactive dyestuff for dyeing wool and nylon in order to substitute heavy metal dyestuff. The dyeing properties of reactive dyestuff in fibers as well as their absorption rates and fastness according to color concentration were investigated. By analyzing the quantity of heavy metals and toxic amine of reactive dyestuff, we investigated their harmfulness trends quantitatively. By comparing the reactive dyes with traditional metal complex dyes, we tried to find out the possibility of the reactive dye being a clean dyes in the future.

  • The collapse of bridges due to earthquakes results in many casualties and property damages. Thus, accurate prediction and preparation are required for the behavior of bridges during earthquakes. In particular, columns play an important role in the seismic behavior of bridges. The risk of collapse due to an earthquake increases when there is a problem of the insufficient lap splice in the column. In this study, to analyze the characteristics of the lap splice in the column, a numerical model was defined for the insufficient lap-spliced columns and verified using experimental data. The developed column model was applied to a commonly used RC slab bridge. Nonlinear static analysis for the column was performed to evaluate the change in the performance of the column according to the lap-spliced length. In addition, this study assessed the effect of the lap-spliced length on the seismic fragility analysis.

  • Investigation and analysis of the debris flow characteristics such as basin topography, geologic conditions of initiation location and triggering rainfall are required to systematically mitigate debris flow hazard. In this paper, 48 debris flows which had caused some damages to the highway in the past 5 years are investigated and their characteristics of basic topography and triggering rainfall are analyzed. Debris flows are found to occur in small basins having the area of $0.01{\sim}0.65km^2$ range and mostly initiated by the surficial failure of natural slope having the inclination of 29~55 degree during the intense rainfall. As for the triggering rainfall, rainfall of 2 to 5 year recurrence frequency are found to be able to trigger the debris flow and magnitude of debris flow in a basin could depend on the rainfall intensity and cumulative amount.

  • Flood forecasting is a very important tool as one of nonstructural measures for reduction of flood damages in life and property and its accuracy is also an important factor. However, when we apply the Storage Function Model(SFM) which is mainly used for the flood forecasting system in Korea, the determination of the parameters is very important but it is difficult. So, the parameters have been calibrated by using an empirical formulas and judgement of hydrologist. Hence, in this study we perform the sensitivity analysis to understand the parameter characteristics and establish the ranges of parameters of the SFM. Also we do the parameter calibration by using the optimization techniques and objective functions, and evaluate their performances. Especially, we suggest a method to determine proper parameters by using a objective function which can be obtained from flood events. So, we use the suggested method for parameter estimation and compare the estimated parameters with the previously reported parameters. As a result of the application, the estimated parameters by the suggested method showed better than them from the previously reported parameters.

  • Flood damage is one of the most important and influential natural disaster which has an effect on human beings. Local concentrated heavy rainfall in urban area yields flood damage increase due to insufficient capacity of drainage system. When the excessive flood occurs in urban area, it yields huge property losses of public facilities involving roadway inundation to paralyze industrial and transportation system of the city. To prevent such flood damages in urban area, it is necessary to develop adequate inundation analysis model which can consider complicated geometry of urban area and artificial drainage system simultaneously. In this study, an urban flood analysis model adopting the unstructured computational grid was developed to simulate the urban flood characteristics such as inundation area, depth and integrated with subsurface drainage network systems. By the result, we can make use of these presented method to find a flood hazard area and to make a flodd evacuation map. The model can also establish flood-mitigation measures as a part of the decision support system for flood control authority.

  • Recently, construction projects are being gradually changed to large projects with complicated work processes. As a result, claims are increasing as well. Of these, the claims by delayed construction duration are given much weight in the general construction claims. To solve this problem, researches to estimate damages due to delay are carried out in research institutes by analyzing the causes of schedule delay. A system to easily estimate responsible days by analyzing the complicated processes needs for project manager. This study suggests a methodology based on the time impact analysis method, which can utilize the consequential analytical method with the consideration of reduced construction period. The suggested methodology is verified by comparing with actual data of case study by the computerized system for estimating the responsible days.

  • Rain-wind induced cable vibration can cause the damages in the cable-stayed bridge due to very little inherent damping characteristics and low fundamental frequency. External Dampers attached to stay cables near anchorages have been shown to be effective means at short stay-cables. However, installation locations of external dampers are limited to a particular range due to aesthetic and practical reasons for very long stay-cables. A recent study by the authors showed that the stay-cable vibration system can perform better than the optimal passive viscous damper, thereby demonstrating its applicability in large cable-stayed bridges. This paper extends the previous study on the taut string representation of the cable by adding cable sag and inclination. The response of the proposed system compared to those of the cable with and without an external damper, and the movable anchorage system provides very effective mitigation of cable vibration. Cable damping ratio is seen to be remarkably reduced by movable anchorage system for a wide range of cable sag. This result shows that the sag effects of the proposed system should be considered.

  • Recently, flood damages have increased with heavy rainfall and typhoon influences, and it requires that visualization information to the flood inundation area of downstream in dam discharge. This study developed 3D GIS system that can visualize flood inundation area for Namgang Dam downstream. First, DEMs extracted from NGIS digital maps and IKONOS satellite images were optimized to mount in iWorld engine using TextureMaker and HeightMaker modules. And flood inundation area of downstream could be efficiently extracted with real-time flooding water level using Coordinate Operation System for Flood control In Multi-reservoir (COSFIM) and Flood Wave routing model (FLDWAV) in river cross section. This visualization information of flood inundation area can be used to examine flood weakness district needed in real time Dam operation and be applied to establish the rapid flood disaster countermeasures efficiently.

  • Recently, as large structures become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive displacement and acceleration due to seismic excitation is increased. As a means to minimize seismic damages, various base isolation systems are adopted or considered for adoption. In this study, a base isolation system using hysteretic damper is shown to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. A mechanical model is determined that can effectively portray the behavior of a typical E-shape device. Comparison with experimental results for a hysteretic damper indicates that the model is accurate over a wide range of operating conditions and adequate for analysis. The seismic performance of hysteretic dampers are studied and compared with the conventional systems as a base isolation system. A five-story building is modeled and the seismic performance of the systems subjected to three different earthquake is compared. The results show that the hysteretic damper system can provide superior protection than the other systems for a wide range of ground motions.

  • Drought is a global phenomenon that affects almost all landscapes and causes major damages. Due to non-linear nature of contributing factors, drought occurrence and its severity is characterized as stochastic in nature. Early warning of impending drought can aid in the development of drought mitigation strategies and measures. Thus, drought forecasting is crucial in the planning and management of water resource systems. The primary objective of this study is to make improvement is existing drought forecasting techniques. Therefore, we proposed an improved version of Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model (MD-SARIMA) for reliable drought forecasting with three years lead time. In this study, we selected four watersheds of Han River basin in South Korea to validate the performance of MD-SARIMA model. The meteorological data from 8 rain gauge stations were collected for the period 1973-2016 and converted into watershed scale using Thiessen's polygon method. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was employed to represent the meteorological drought at seasonal (3-month) time scale. The performance of MD-SARIMA model was compared with existing models such as Seasonal Naive Bayes (SNB) model, Exponential Smoothing (ES) model, Trigonometric seasonality, Box-Cox transformation, ARMA errors, Trend and Seasonal components (TBATS) model, and SARIMA model. The results showed that all the models were able to forecast drought, but the performance of MD-SARIMA was robust then other statistical models with Wilmott Index (WI) = 0.86, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) = 0.66, and Root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.80 for 36 months lead time forecast. The outcomes of this study indicated that the MD-SARIMA model can be utilized for drought forecasting.
