  • PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons), one of the carcinogenic materials in environment, were investigated in this study. The standardized analysis conditions were tested, and then various factors which affect to the ambient PAHs concentration in Seoul were estimated. Moreover, the emissions of PAHs from major stationary sources were investigated to determine the quantitative relationships between ambient PAHs concentrations and emission sources. From the factor analysis, three factors relevant to the ambient PAHs in Seoul were found. Factor 1 was related to the concentrations of chrysene, pyrene, indeno (1, 2, 3-cd)pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, and benzo prerylene which were mainly emitted from gasoline and diesel fueled cars. Factor 2 showed higher loadings in phenanthrene and anthracene which were due to LNG and BC oil combustion in industry and home. And factor 3 included dibenz(a, h)anthracene and acenaphthene which were emitted from open burning and municipal solid waste incineration. Conclusively, all of three factors were consisted in 82% of total variance. The contribution of mobile sources in ambient air in Seoul was estimated at 64%, that of industrial and home sources at 17%, and that of open burning and municipal incineration at 1%.

  • Objectives: This study is intended to seek credible and efficient measurements on airborne asbestos concentrations that allow immediate action by establishing complementary data through comparative analysis with existing PCM and KF-100 method real-time monitoring equipment in working areas in Seoul where asbestos-containing buildings are being demolished, including living environment surroundings. Materials: We measured airborne asbestos concentrations using PCM and KF-100 at research institutes, monitoring networks, subway stations and demolition sites of asbestos-containing buildings. Through this measurement data and KF-100 performance testing, we drew a conversion factor and applied it via KF-100. Finally we verified the relationship between PCM and KF-100 with statistical methods. Results: The airborne asbestos concentrations by PCM for the objects of study were less than the detection limit(7 fiber/$mm^2$) in three (20%) out of 15 samples. The highest concentration was 0.009 f/cc. The airborne asbestos concentrations by PCM in laboratories, monitoring networks, subway stations and demolition sites of asbestos-containing buildings were respectively $0.002{\pm}0.000$ f/cc, $0.004{\pm}0.001$ f/cc, $0.009{\pm}0.001$ f/cc, and $0.002{\pm}0.000$ f/cc. As a result of KF-100 performance testson rooftops, the conversion factor was 0.1958. Applying the conversion factor to KF-100 for laboratories, the airborne asbestos concentrations ratio of the two ways was nearly 1:1.5($R^2$=0.8852). Also, the airborne asbestos concentration ratio of the two ways was nearly 1:1($R^2$=0.9071) for monitoring networks, subway stations, and demolition sites of asbestos-containing buildings. As a result of independent sample t-tests, there was no distinction between airborne asbestos concentrations monitored in the two ways. Conclusions: In working areas where asbestos-containing buildings are being demolished, including living environment surroundings, quickly and accurately monitoring airborne asbestos scattered in the air around the working area is highly important. For this, we believea mutual interface of existing PCM and a real-time monitoring equipment method is possible.

  • Quantum dots (QDs) have received considerable attention due to their potential role in photosensitization during photodynamic therapy. Although QDS are attractive nanomaterials due to their novel and unique physicochemical properties, concerns about their toxicity remain. We suggest a combination strategy, CdSe/ZnS QDs together with curcumin, a natural yellow pigment from turmeric, to reduce QD-induced cytotoxicity. The aim of this study was to explore a potentially effective cancer treatment: co-exposure of HL-60 cells and human normal lymphocytes to CdSe/ZnS QDs and curcumin. Cell viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and DNA damage induced by QDs and/or curcumin with or without ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation were evaluated in both HL-60 cells and normal lymphocytes. In HL-60 cells, cell death, apoptosis, ROS generation, and single/double DNA strand breaks induced by QDs were enhanced by treatment with curcumin and UVA irradiation. The protective effects of curcumin on cell viability, apoptosis, and ROS generation were observed in normal lymphocytes, but not leukemia cells. These results demonstrated that treatment with QD combined with curcumin increased cell death in HL-60 cells, which was mediated by ROS generation. However, curcumin acted as an antioxidant in cultured human normal lymphocytes.

  • This study was conducted to monitor residual pesticides in perilla leaf & lettuce and to assess their risk to human health. The total number of perilla leaf & lettuce were 4,063 and 2,248 respectively and these products were collected at the Garak-dong Agricultural & Marine Products Market sold by auction from 2010 to 2012. Multi-residual analysis of 285 pesticides were performed by GC-ECD, GC-NPD, HPLC-DAD and HPLC-FLD. In perilla leaf, 61 pesticides were detected and detection rate was 20.0%. 28 pesticides were detected in case of lettuce and detection rate was 4.8%. In order to do risk assessment by perilla leaf & lettuce consumption, estimated daily intake of residual pesticides were determined and compared to acceptable daily intake, referring to hazard index (HI values). The range of % HI values of perilla leaf was from 0.000% to 0.049%. The range of % HI values of lettuce was from 0.000% to 0.095%. These results show that the risk caused by pesticide residues in perilla leaf & lettuce intake were very low and these vegetable intake was safe.

  • The emission gas from meat grilled restaurants has unpleasant odor and sticky particulate matters (PM) in form of oil mist. This affects the residents living nearby. In oder to decrease the odor and PM, electrostatic precipitators (ESP) were installed at several restaurants by support of Seoul metropolitan government and emission characteristics of PM and odor were investigated. The removal efficiency of odor and PM at before- and after-ESP was that total hydrocarbon (THC), NH3, H2S, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde were not much decreased. Total suspended particles (TSP) emitted from the vent was below the value of 7 mg/m3 regardless of the concentration of before-ESP and removal efficiency was in the range of 64 ~ 86%. The ratio of PM1.0 to PM10 of emission gas was over 0.9. So it was revealed that most PM of emission gas was PM1.0. The PM concentration in the air of the street near the vent was higher than another street due to the emission gas and the PM of indoor air of restaurant grilling meats was measured very high compared to outdoor air. So it needs more powerful ventilation of indoor air.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to evaluate the exposure of VOCs and effects of the chemicals on the nail technicians whose works in a nail shop. Methods: For four month from May to August in 2016, we measured twenty-two kinds of VOCs in ten nail shops and carried out health examinations on thirty-four workers in there. Results: The TVOC concentration in indoor air of nail shops is $0.487mg/m^3$ at a minimum and $33.236mg/m^3$ at a maximum where it consists of 70.5% of Ketones, 25.4% of Alcohols, 2.6% of Esters, 0.8% of Aldehydes and 0.7% of Aromatics. The VOCs concentration during nail art works shows an increase in average ratio 1.8 compared to the concentration of indoor air quality and also the concentration of Isopropanol rose with 3.2 of the highest ratio. The results of Spearman correlation between TVOC concentration in indoor air and environmental factor was like that has significance level of correlation(${\rho}$<0.05, r=0.682) in case of number of customers per day, but the other factors were not meaningful in correlation. Correlation between VOCs and medical check-up items was like that has positive significance level(${\rho}$<0.01, r=0.638) between isopropanol and GPT, but the others have not meaningful. The exposure level of VOCs was not exceed the criteria exposure level 1 of working environment measuring method which announced by labor ministry in all ten nail shop indoor air quality. Conclusions: In this study although it was not significant correlation between harmful substances and medical check-up items in the nail shop indoor air quality, it is necessary to do more ventilation and to install exhaust facilities because of existing high VOCs concentration in the nail shop indoor air.

  • This study was focused on the evaluation of Nanjido landfill site by leachate analysis. Several parameters, for example pH, BOD, $COD_{Mn},\;COD_{Cr}$, SS, TP, $NH_3-N$, Color, were selected as major leachate quality parameters. $BOD/COD_{Cr}$. was used to estimate the biodegradable portion in organic matter. Samples were collected at the leachate storage wells and leachate treatment facility inflow in each quarter of 2003. The results were as follows : 1. Inflow quality of treatment plant in 2003 was analysed as $pH\;7.3\~8.0,\;BOD\;12.4\~30.0mg/L,\;COD_{Mn}\;101.2\~130.3mg/L,\;COD_{Cr}\;122.5\~238.0mg/L,\;SS\;16.1\~115.3mg/L$, $T-P\;0.27\~0.80mg/L,\;NH_3-N\;208.0\~~354.0mg/L$, Color $110.3\~129.0$ unit. 2. $BOD/COD_{Cr}$ of inflow ranged between $0.07\~0.16$ indicating that the landfill had the properties of old-fill and organic portion in leachate was mostly persistent organic matter. 3. Though concentrations of BOD, COD, $NH_3-N$, Color in leachate storage wells were mostly higher in first landfill than in second landfill, $BOD/COD_{Cr}$ ranging from 0.03 to 0.20, showed reversely. 4. Correlation coefficient$(R^2)$ between color and other parameters related to organic matter showed mostly above 0.7 and especially highest value with $COD_{Mn}$ of 0.7985.
