  • In the case of single well pumping tests the storativities are generally overestimated. To compensate these errors, the effective wellbore radius should be introduced as a distance to an imaginary observation well in the time-drawdown analysis. Effective wellbore radius can be calculated through step drawdown tests or using skin factor equation. But both are of trial-and-error methods guessing real storativity values and, therefor, are difficult to apply to the field conditions. An equation was developed to estimate effective wellbore radius from storativity values obtained from pumping well data. For this study, a total of 136 time-drawdown data set were used to derive the equation. The effective wellbore radius were estimated first by changing them till the storativity values obtained from the pumping-well data match the ones based on the observation-well data. Then the equation was regressed from the relation between effective wellbore radius and the storativity values obtained from the pumping-well data. It is believed that the equation would be useful in estimating effective wellbore radius from the single well tests.

  • Generally, in the temperature and environment test of railway electronics, cold and heat resistant tests are involved. Relevant KRS standards describe "There is no problem" as acceptance criteria for function check during the temperature and environment tests. According to this requirement, testers perform some function and performance tests which are easy to perform during test procedure using temperature chamber. This paper reviews the limit of current check method for cold and heat resistant tests and proposes an alternative. An alternative is the application of data sheet. Using data sheet, the temperature of equipped components is checked whether this temperature meet acceptance criteria or not. Also, this paper suggests temperature test range guidelines comparing temperature standards for general IC component. For the example in real field, this method uses the lowest temperature and the highest temperature in major domestic cities.

  • In this paper, a new load monitoring system for military aircraft is introduced. This system consists of sensors, an onboard device and an ground analysis equipment. The sensors and onboard device are mounted on the aircraft and the ground analysis equipment is operated on the ground. Through this system, structural static load can be estimated with flight parameters and structural responses can be measured by sensors due to static load, dynamic load and unexpected events. Especially, optical fiber sensors with mutiplexing capability are utilized. The onboard device was specially designed for complying the requirements of relevant military specifications and was verified through a series of the environment tests. This system was used and evaluated through ground structural tests before flight tests. In the near future, this system will be applied to military aircraft as a structural load monitoring system after flight test evaluation.

  • This study elucidates the uplift behaviors of the straight-sided and belled shafts. The field uplift load tests were carried out on 18 straight-sided and 15 belled shafts at the three collapsible loess sites under an arid environment on the Loess Plateau in Northwest China. Both the site conditions and the load tests were documented comprehensively. In general, the uplift load-displacement curves of the straight-sided and belled shafts approximately exhibited an initial linear, a curvilinear transition, and a final linear region, but did not provide a well defined peak or asymptotic value of the load, and therefore their uplift resistances should be interpreted from the load test results using an appropriate criterion. Nine representative uplift resistance interpretation criteria were used to define the "interpreted failure load" for each of the load tests, and all of these interpreted uplift resistances were normalized by the failure threshold, $T_{L2}$, obtained using the $L_1-L_2$ method. These load test data were compared statistically and graphically. For the straight-sided and belled shafts, the normalized uplift load-displacement curves were respectively established by the plots that related the mean interpreted uplift resistance ratio against the mean displacement at the corresponding interpreted criteria, and the comparisons of the normalized load-displacement curves were made. Specific recommendations for the designs of uplift belled and straight-sided shafts in the loess were given, in terms of both capacity and displacement.

  • Background and Objectives: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a disorder that usually occurs in the elderly, leading to dementia in some progressive cases. The purpose of this study is to examine the utility of central auditory processing tests as early diagnostic tools for identifying the elderly with MCI. Subjects and Methods: This study was conducted on 20 elderly patients with MCI and 20 healthy matched peers. The speech perception ability in a quiet environment and in the presence of background noise and also temporal resolution were assessed by using Speech Perception in Noise (SPIN) and Gap in Noise (GIN) tests, respectively. Results: The results indicated that the ability to understand speech in a quiet environment did not differ significantly between the two groups. However, SPIN at the three signal-to-noise ratios and the temporal resolution scores were significantly different between the two groups (p<0.001). Conclusions: Individuals with MCI appear to have poorer speech comprehension in noise and a lower temporal resolution than those of the same age, but without cognitive defects. Considering the utility of these tests in identifying cognitive problems, we propose that since the GIN test seems to be less influenced by intervening factors, this test can therefore, be a useful tool for the early screening of elderly people with cognitive problems.

  • Toxicity tests in our laboratory are conducted usually with mass-reared organisms. They are under the same environmentel conditions throughout seasons and are supplied at specific age. A total of 38 species of aquatic organisms are being reared. We have attempted to establish pruified strains or to select clones of various parthenogenic organisms. The merits or demerits of our culturing test organisms are discussed. The differences in the susceptibility among clones or strains of test organism are also discussed. For a single species test, algae, daphnia, fish are often used. However, we usually use early stages, but occasionally, adults fish are used for reproduction tests. As an another important aspect, the toxicity through food chains has been studied. In this study, we select a pair of species belonging different trophic levels. The differences between single species tests and multispecies tests will be discussed. Even a single species test intends to assess the effects of chemicals on ecosystem levels, however, this idea is not applicable to ecosystems. Single species tests with standard organisms and multispecies tests are contradictory in concept. One type of multispecles tests is indoor microcosms being composed of severel species artificially assembled, and another is composed of natural components (both indoor and outdoor). We have used three types of outdoor mesocosms using ponds and three types of artificial streams. The mesocosms is useful to not only to analyze the floral or faun61 changes but also to study the fate or behaviour of chemicals in naturd environments. Lastly, usefulness of the field observation or experiments or semi-field experiments will be discussed. This will enhance the exploitation of early warning systems utilizing indicator organisms or animal behaviour.aviour.

  • Many studies tried to develop a 3D display based stereo test as a substitute for the conventional stereo test. Although many 3D monitor based stereo tests have various advantages over the conventional stereo tests with printed stimuli, they have a crucial limitation in manipulating disparity. The least value for disparity manipulation is one pixel, which is too big to screen the normal stereo acuity in pc environment with a short viewing distance. In this explorative study, a Gabor image was employed as a test stimulus, because its position can be manipulated by changing its phase information, which allows sub-pixel manipulation for disparity. Instead of employing the methods of the conventional stereo tests where measurement was made only once for each of a wide range of disparity values, 10 replications were administrated for each of 6 disparity levels. The results from the test using Gabor images were compared with those using random dot stimulus because the latter stimulus was exactly the same as that of the conventional stereo test. The correlation coefficient between two tests was found to be moderate. After one month later, the whole test was repeated in the same settings. The correlation coefficient between test and retest results from Gabor images was found to be as high as that from a random dot stimulus, implying high test-retest reliability. These results suggest that a Gabor stimulus could be used as a test stimulus for the valid and reliable stereo test, even in the limited condition, such as 3D environment with a short viewing distance and a condition for evaluating the stereo acuity very precisely.

  • Little study has been published specifically addressing the dynamics of nitrate reducing bacteria (NBR) during the bioremediation of nitrate-contaminated aquifer. In our previous study we successfully quantified fumarate-enhanced microbial nitrate reduction rate in a nitrate-contaminated aquifer by using a series of single-well push-pull tests (PPTs). In this study we analyzed the suspended population during PPTs. To monitor changes in the microbial community, PCR amplification of 16S rDNA genes and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) were used to study the dynamics of the bacterial community in detail. Before the stimulation of NBR, the dominant DGGE bands obtained by PCR were affiliated with V-Proteobacteria consisting of Acinetobacter spp. and Pseudomonas fluorescens. However, as NBR biostimulation proceeded, the dominant patterns of DGGE bands changed, and they were affiliated with Azoarcus denitrificans Td-3 and Flavobacterium xanthum. Azoarcus denitrificans Td-3 is known to completely reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas. The series of single-well push-pull tests in this study should prove useful for conducting rapid, low-cost feasibility assessments for in situ denitrification and provide important information about which microorganisms play a key role in bioremediation of a nitrate contaminated aquifer.

  • In this paper, the evaluating test methods of the fire and the electric shock on the Electric pad using the house is proposed. We analyzed electric pad using magnetic shielded type hot wire because electric pad using the magnetic shielded type hot wire generally be used in the home. We analyzed FMEA in order to analyze the mechanism of the fire and the electric shock of the electric pad and designed testing methods (Durability tests on the environment, Mechanical durability tests, Electrical durability tests) obtained through the two-step QFD and tested. We verified the evaluating test methods of the fire and the electric shock on the Electric pad using the house through the analysis of the test results.
