  • The Korean semiconductor industry has made a great contribution to growth of Korean economy for the last decades by maintaining a top position in terms of Korean total annual export volume. However, the advanced semiconductor equipment and materials that are used for the production of semiconductor devices still depend on the suppliers from Europe, Japan, and America who have an influential position in the Korean semiconductor industry. The objective of this study is to empirically investigate the attributes determining the extent of autonomy in decision making for the Korean subsidiaries of multinational corporations in the semiconductor industry. This study found there were differences in the extent of autonomy in decision making in terms of the global strategies the multinational corporations pursue. This study surveyed employees at the Korean subsidiaries and joint venture companies of semiconductor multinational corporations and collected 726 survey questionnaires. Several statistical analyses including frequency analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, multiple regression analysis and ANOVA were performed using the collected sample data. Based on the analyses, this study found as follow: Firstly, from the factor analysis, this study found Korean subsidiaries faced three sources of uncertainties stemmed from political conditions, competent conditions, demand and supply conditions. The internal resources were characterized by the independencies of production capability, financial capability, marketing capability and human resource management capability. The operational performance was determined by total revenue, net profit and market share growth. Secondly, it was found the uncertainties from political condition and competent condition and the independencies of financial capability and marketing capability partially influenced the extent of autonomy in decision making. The independencies of production capability and human resource management capability significantly influenced the autonomy of decision making in the most areas. It was also found an increase of total revenue, net profit and market share growth partially affected the extent of autonomy in decision making of the Korean subsidiaries. Finally, it was found that the polycentrism of global management by multinational corporations seemed to bring a higher extent of autonomy in decision making than ethnocentrism or geocentrism of global management. Based on the results, this study provided managerial implications regarding the extent of autonomy in decision making for Korean subsidiaries of multinational corporations in order to help management to enhance their business capabilities.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an assessment index for the selection of promising start-ups, which will enhance the efficiency of program that support start-ups. In order to develop assessment models for selecting start-ups, three major research steps were conducted. First, this study attempted to theoretically redefine the assessment index from the perspective of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) through a literature review. Second, major assessment index were derived using Delphi technique for experts in start-up areas. Third, weights were derived by applying AHP technique to calculate the importance of each index. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, this study attempted to apply the assessment model for selecting start-ups from the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) view through the previous study review. Second, the final major questions were derived with sufficient opinions collected and structured survey of leading start-up experts in areas related to research subjects and elicited the most representative questions. Third, the results of applying the weights of the main selected assessment index, commercialization viewpoint is the most priority, followed by market view, technology development viewpoint, and organizational capability viewpoint. In the middle section, th ability to make products in the commercialization viewpoint, market competitiveness in the market, product discrimination capacity in the technology development perspective, and the ability of the entrepreneur in the organizational capacity perspective were important. Overall important items were found to be in the order of the capabilities of entrepreneurs, market competitiveness, product fire capability, and product discrimination. The importance of small items was highest priority for comparative excellence of competing products, and the degree of marketability, capacity of entrepreneurship, ability to raise capital, desire for entrepreneurship, and passion were shown. The results of this study presented a conceptual alternative to the preceding study on the development of existing selection assessment indexes. And it provides meaningful and important implications as an attempt to develop more sophisticated indicators by overcoming the limitations of empirical research on only some of the evaluation metrics.

  • This study analyzed both the effect small and medium-sized suppliers' SCM capacity on the performance and how the moderating effect of demand uncertainty as an environmental factor affects this relation. The study is based on the data collected from the survey of small and medium-sized suppliers operating in electronics, metal, machinery, automobile, and textile. It analyzed the results of survey targeting suppliers of these areas by using structure equation modeling. According to the analyzed result, the relation capital of small and medium-sized supplier affects the performance, but there is no relation between coordination capability and the performance. In case of the moderating effect of demand uncertainty, while there is a positive moderating effect of demand uncertainty between relation capital and performance, there is no any moderating effect between coordination capability and performance. It turns out that the relation capital keep having a positive effect on the performance even if there is a demand uncertainty.

  • This study empirically analyzed the relationship with major influencing factors in enhancing innovation capability of start-ups and their influence on innovation performance. If the existing innovation competency studies were analyzed from a general corporate perspective, In this study, it was analyzed from the perspective of start-up companies with less than 7 years of founding. As a result of a survey on startups, learning competency among the sub-variables of innovation competency, R&D competency and marketing competency are significant positive (+) consistent with both organizational competence related to organizational culture and organizational goals, technology commercialization competency, and close product competency. Has been shown to affect. The technical competence part does not have a significant effect on the product competency. However, it could not be interpreted that the importance of these competencies was low. This is because although technical competence did not directly affect product competency, it was analyzed as a meaningful result in relation to R&D competency. In addition, the characteristics of the company were classified into technology orientation and market orientation, and the relationship between each sub-variable was analyzed. The technical competence of a technology-oriented company did not have a significant effect on the product competency, but it was found that it had an effective effect on the R&D capacity. It is also consistent with the research findings that the initial survival rate is low as the characteristics of start-ups are often based on technology and ideas. Based on these results, There is a difference in major innovation capabilities according to the growth stage of a company. From a practical point of view, I would like to present approaches and implications for strengthening the competence of start-ups.

  • University-to-industry technology transfer has become an increasingly important issue in recent years. Studies on technology transfer and commercialization evolved to diverse knowledge transfer channels. Among them, university spin-off is not only known as the most direct and tangible method but also suitable for effectively transferring tacit knowledge. Much of the studies on university spin-offs are mostly focused on macro-level but studies using the individual professors as their unit of analysis need better understanding as well. This paper investigates why the speed of university spin-off formations differ among individual professors drawing on the resource-based view. Utilizing data of 149 professors in 25 universities who formed spin-offs, Cox regression results suggest that professors' technological research capabilities, academic research capabilities and financial resources promote university spin-off formations.
